Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hi @Former-Member

I thought it was interesting that your partner thought it worth while to stick out a mundane job for kids .. a lot of people do .. I had an uncle who worked making toilet rolls for 30 years and he brought up 5 beautiful boys .. mostly traides ... we dont have much contact since that uncle died ... but i dont have any problems with them because .. they were good hard working people and decent ... not like some other parts of the family who were more successful but devious.

At least he is upfront about his desire for kids and it is fair enough and prepred to work for it and be a caring person.

I cant reassure you about the stats re schizophrenia ... yet each person situation is still unique ... if you have read most of my story you would know it has been a harrowing experience for me .. childhood and parenting ... but there are rewards ... I cant say ... I should nt have had kids ... the bottom line is that I love and respect them ... I feel my life has been far richer than some of the women I know who never went that way. So I can never say it has been a mistake.

Working out ... and working out ... lol ... energy expenditure is part of being a responsible person.

I had a lot of difficulty getting my head around domestic tasks but mostly I have 2 main approaches:

1) meditative approach to dishes, making beds .. just calm ... and breathe and quietly go through through the regular motions needed.

2) Energy swoops (at odd hours) to do the heavy lifting ... and cleaning ... and an averaging out approach ... approximately clean and tidy is good enough.... call it manic is you like.

@Ellie Hi Ellie .. good luck with what you are going through ... I hope it settles.

I dont believe in the golden grail of the perfect med mix ... there are always trade offs .. I guess I did my own experimenting ... saw what I needed to by 21 ... and am a bit suss of big pharma ... I just wish there were better support services and supportive commnities .. I am sure you are doing your bit .. you work in the field ..dont you?

On some levels I could have BPD ... just taking it from the list @PeppiPatty posted .. but in other ways and my psychologist agreed .. I tend to follow through too much ... more than they think is typical fro BPD .. maybe they can keep juggling those definitions ...

Hmmm I believe some of the issues around the criteria ... "history of unstable interpersonal relationships" ... shouldnt be an excuse to label the person ... it is social context ... there are so many different demographics and groups in a pluralist society.

Just dropping in ... being busy with music and house cleaning ... hands still smell of bleach ... and YES it was not a normal time to decide to clean the kitchen shelves and mop floor ... but HEY gotta catch those moods ... when it hits ... I do the job.

Good night

Dear @Former-Member

I think that you will be fine in public housing. I have had a very difficult time because my neighbour and friend, someone I never would..not .....'usually,' associate with....... is someone that I care about. She lives next door and she has meade decisions that are bad for her. But now......at last she has a diagnosis and hopefully, she can manage to work things more to her benefit. She also hated taking medication but her age and my age, this is something that we cannot escape enymore...........We dont have what you have;

Youth

A great Psychiatrist

A supportive partner.

Before, she never had a friend. Thats me. The other day, I told her that I care about my husband first, my kids then her. You shouold have seen her smile, toothless and .....weird and cute......lol ..lol ....AND same age as me..........

You are too intelligent to get yourself into these messes @Former-Member. We had all our doors open and someone walked in, My mum lives in a wealthy area and she left all her doors open and someone walked into her home and stole her handbag and car.

Dearest @Appleblossom and @Mazarita and @Former-Member and @Shaz51 and everyone like @Jacques....@MoonGal..... @MoonGal I still think of your compliment to me all the time........Thank you for that!! Yes, @Appleblossom, Not that Im a professional but I don't see you as diagnosed as BPD. I certainly go like BPD when Im under huge stress. One day, Ille dig out my diagnosis .......if I can find it........ The diagnosis BPD It's just a diagnosis that is VERY MISUNDERSTOOD. UNFAIR. What do you think of the paper, theres two more pages.....do you want me to post them tomorrow?? you know that they are trusted because my Psychotherapist gave em to me...... I thought that your issues are all stemming from early family and marital. I LOVE how you talk to people on the bus.......I do that too but in Woolworths to get away from Mr I need a smoke a lot of cigarettes husband....teeheeheehee!!! night night to all my friends and everyone....

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

I agree that public housing doesnt have to be bad ... @Former-Member it might work out for you ... there are also great people who live there.... I grew up in commission flats ... and thought I was rich cos we had a home. Truly lots of good people . . the violent druggie chic who lives next door to me is buying her house .. there are problem people everywhere.

@PeppiPatty re BPD ... I strongly identify with all the criteria ... but it was weird when I spoke to first main psychiatrist ... he immediately thought my brother had BPD but I had severe depression .. I hadnt started SH then... but it went on whilst seeing this fella (doc) .. somehow he was such an overpowering personality he stifled me if I tried to discuss things ... I saw him for too long. Now I would just think of him as a big shot ... at the time I thought he was god.

But the point is that everybody's diagnoses are due to a range of issues not just a defective gene. I have done my Psych work .. and so can link all the causes etc .. but others can too.

Lovely to see you peppi.

I think @Former-Member needs a bit of sane forums care and love hey @Appleblossom

And @Ellie

I thought I identified with the diagnosis too but no....no.

It's lovely to speak to you @Appleblossom I've been having a silly hard time with a few things in my life but it's all covered with major panic attacks all day so I went to quora and winged and winged and all these people around the world are giving me tactics on how to manage them.

Blooming heck,,,,,,,isnt it nice to get older?

Now your gaving to have a smile Apple, what are you reading these days? I went to local op shop and got a book I WANted and it's $2 at the local op shop....By David Marr, 'PAtrick White.' I was a carer for atheatre writer in West Australian, she was in her eighties and she had the most AMAzing book collection. It was difficult for me to do stuff with her and not flick through these awesome books and I got one of the books for just $2 !!!

Why is it......when your in absolute feral stress....you just keep on going...and working and managing and then, when the stress leaves......you crash???

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi aButterfly. Yes, I was diagnosed with BPD and this Tuesday will be my 5th week of DBT. So far I'm finding it a struggle as I have to balance doctor's visits, blood tests (medication induced hepatitis) and this week, back to work after a lengthy spell away from the job. I'm only working one day per week and have to travel an hour and twenty minutes just to get there, but at least it makes me feel useful.

I think it was Appleblossom who mentioned there not being a perfect med mix and that's so true. Always a trade-off somewhere along the line. Today I was told to go off my old medication, which really wasn't doing much anyway and continue with another medication that I began three nights ago, so yet more experimentation! Maybe one day they'll get it right. I also have something else going on besides my BPD, but don't want to discuss it at present.

Kind regards to all of you,

Ellie.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi @Ellie...

Glad you are doing DBT & I hope it is helpful for you. It is frequently a successful treatment for BPD. I hope going back to work goes well...

@Jacques - my partner & I have been together for 12 plus years & children have been discussed many times. The reason it is coming up again is that we have to decide what city to put on the housing commission application. (Thanks @Appleblossom & @PeppiPatty for the reassurance re government housing.) Re having children ~ if problems arose I believe early intervention is the key. I do think I would be a good mother even if symptoms of mental illness persist.

Can everyone please forgive me? I have been extra physically exhausted for over a week. I googled if it can be a withdrawal effect of my antipsychotic & bingo! I'm thankful for your responses & support, but I am just too tired to respond properly myself.... Sorry.

Namaste,

A

Hi Dear @Former-Member,

I am so sorry, i did not mean you would be a bad mother, i was talking about my choice never to have children, i know their are many people with MI that are great parents, i know you have worked with children and i know with your kind and lovely personality you would make a great mum 🙂

I understand Anna, yes the application is very important, and i am so glad you are thinking ahead. i am wishing you and your partner all the best for the future.

Please forgive me if i upset you. it was not my intention.

Namaste to you too Anna 🙂
