Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Sometimes it is useful to insert a 3rd position whenn we get into black and white thinking ... eg I am hopeless and cant do things well enough ... or I have to take on the world.

The middle path is also a Buddhist philosophy ..

Sometimes life sucks and we all feel like shit ... but you have a lot going for you ... just go gently.

Hey @Former-Member, so glad you started this thread, and reading your days changing medication levels I am so glad you are here (as hard as it is without a laptop at the moment).

Just found this thread and hope you are still travelling okay - as hard as it all is, and I know that medication changes rellay takes it out and chucks us around, I read a very resilient person who is doing the very best for herself. Hope you keep on keping on and wishing you the very best.

@Appleblossom - I like that 'third' way of looking at something. I get trapped in the black and white too and have spent many years trying to incoprorate shades & other tones into my thinking.

There is always more than just "either, or"... there is also "AND."...

Hi all...

I thought I was going to break apart or something last night - I kept thinking "I can't do this". When I took my medication after dinner (it needs to be taken with food or it loses effectiveness) ~ I realised I had forgotten to take my morning dose! It was an ah-ha moment of no wonder I feel like I'm about to break into a million pieces! Anyhow, talked to my partner & then re watched a light hearted movie - The Proposal.

I had a restless sleep & woke up very tired, but was determined to get to yoga x 3 this week. I'm glad I went & my instructor assisted me to do a headstand, which was a bit scary & made me feel like I SHOULD have a panic attack. I'm not heavy, but I don't have the strength in my arms & shoulders to lift my entire body weight just quite yet! I need to do some more work on my partner's gym set!

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement & support... @MoonGal ~ I feel like one of the least resilient people! It's probably just differences in perception of what resilience entails ~ thank you anyhow! I know I am determined & know how to persevere...

My partner was looking at notebooks ~ good quality ones ~ Asus, Microsoft etc are around $450. Sounds good to me! It means I can also get new reading glasses next month when I can get a centrelink advance payment.

@Appleblossom ~ lots of backlash against dsm & labelling these days ~ every individual will experience psychosis or mania or anxiety or depression or eating/body image problems etc completely differently.... Although there a similarities. There are people trying to work out how to better define these mental health problems. A hard ask!

I'm sounds like your mother was neglectful of your emotional needs. 😞

Hey there @Former-Member,

Good to read your post and learn about the ways that you are continuing to support yourself in the face of anxiety and low mood. You talked to people who care, found distraction from the dark thoughts, persevered with self care (yoga) and even faced a new challenge with the headstand! You made some great decisions for your mental health 🙂

Good point about missing medication, so easy to do and with psychotropic meds 1or 2 missed tabs can make a big difference.

Your determination to be well is a great strength that you have. Just a general reminder not to mention brand names of any products on the forum (oops!), as it is not permitted in the guidelines. That said, you will find forum chat easier on a bigger device 🙂

Keep taking care of yourself and sharing your wisdom with us.

Kind regards,

Frog

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi @Former-Member,

You make some very important comments here about the use of social media and how it can negatively affect our self esteeem and mental health.

Most of us use some form of social media these days to stay intouch with friends and family, especially those who live some distance away. I have seen amazing support campaigns on FB or Go Fund Me for lovely people struggling with cancer treatment etc.

The down side can be if we spend alot of time posting and reading stuff, it often becomes a main form of social contact in our lives and sometimes the face to face stuff drops away. Then we can develop unrealistic expectations (or paranoid thoughts as you say) about who should like or reply, and in what time frame. Also we see happy, shiny posts from others lives and think "my life is crap compared to that", which of course affects our mood.

I've found that limiting my time on social media, and keeping engaged in life-affirming activities has given me a good sense of balance about that world.

What have others found regarding how social media has positively or negatively affected them? Look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Thanks a lot @froginapond... Sorry about the brand names - thought that rule only applied to medication :-S You can edit it if it is a problem.

I read a good article about social media this week - it said people's news feeds are "partial truths" & the we usually look at social media when we are in lull & vulnerable to comparing. It also urged people to connect more off social media ~ I certainly try to do this, but everyone just seems so busy... I don't have many true friends. My partner ~ best friend ~ keeps me alive. I personally think social media is doing more harm than good for human relationships & connectedness... Without it you can become isolated though, because few people bother to call these days... Just some thoughts...

I'm pretty tired ~ sorry I can't add more. I managed a workout on the gym set this afternoon - trying to build the strength for asanas like headstand, wheelbarrow & scorpion!

Will probably watch a movie now...

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

@Former-Member... Resilience to me is exactly as you described what you do "I know I am determined & know how to persevere..." I partly see resilience as getting back up after being knocked about or falling down. Being on your own side, trying again. Hope things get easier for you, everything passes. Take heart in your self that you are here and doing what needs to be done in the struggle. I admire you.
