Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

@Former-Member

It's hard for you.

Please try and blank your mind. The trees outside grow to shade the land and the flowers are growing around you.

Sometimes it gives a person a sense of being more genuine when they can express their anger. @Former-Member You didnt hurt anybody by expressing it. There were truths in what you said and given you are dealing with side effects, it makes sense that you would be angry. Anger is better out than in ... but tricky doing it in socially acceptable ways .. nor do we want to let it consume us.

I loved your image of the sky crying. Under anger are usually gentler emotions.

I was wondering if you grow any of your vegetables? I am hopeless at it .. just a few herbs ...

Take care and Namaste

Hi all...

Thank you @PeppiPatty & @Appleblossom...

I made it to hot vinyasa yoga! It was an energetic & challenging class & I thoroughly enjoyed it!! No panicky feelings doing the yogic breathing today - Yay! (I did have that once yesterday...) I like telling my instructor if I especially enjoy a class & I also thanked her for being an amazing & creative teacher (in the spirit of random acts of kindness week) ~ she gave me a hug!!

Thanks for your understanding re my anger towards psychiatry. The thing that angers me most is that I had ECT & suggestions of more ECT ~ I was vulnerable & desperate for relief in 2005 after a close call with death & I was assured that it only caused short term memory loss. That has not been the case for me ~ It is soul breaking losing so much of yourself. Anyhow, it is okay ~ I am on my journey away from psychiatry ~ the withdrawals are amplifying emotions, but I'm riding out the storm as best as I can. Please bear with me & thank you for doing so so far.

Yes, when I'm sad, depressed, low, upset etc & it rains ~ I feel a release ~ the sky is crying for me 🙂 Although, I did shed some of my own tears as well last night.

We had success growing tomatoes last year when we had a garden near where the pigs live. Mother in law & brother in law planted a whole lot of other fruits & vegetables, but most of them went in the pigs tummies as they did not plan the garden or prepare the soil & garden beds well. The tomatoes were a success & absolutely delicious, because my partner took care with the soil & raised the garden bed. Now we have a big garden bed outside the cabin. I'm sure we will grow tomatoes again, but next we will probably put some herbs in ~ rosemary, mint, coriander, basil.

@Mazarita - there seems to be very few psychiatrists in Brisbane (where I used to live & travel to for psychiatrist & psychologist appointments now) who bulk bill. Someone ONCE told me of one. I did have a psychiatrist who charged me a concession fee, but he didn't work out as he was too extreme ~ being anti meds (although he denied it) & therefore was taking me of medication way too fast & when I crashed & burned he wouldn't admit me to hospital (& then was no longer affiliated with a hospital). I gave him two chances. There may be some psychiatrists who bulk bill in Toowoomba (half hour away), although I'm nervous to change. My psychiatrist speciality is getting women of medication (or on "safer" medication - although personally if I ever get pregnant I'm not taking a chance with any psychotropic medication) so they can fall pregnant. Therefore, she is a bit more open minded about reducing my medication than probably 90% of psychiatrists. She said I should never been on maximum dose of the antipsychotic, because I am petite. She is very cautious & will quickly tell me to increase it if I am struggling, which I ignore (except for temporary increases to the benzodiazpine dose) ~ all she knows is drugs & invasive brain therapy (TMS was also offered to me last year ~ at first I felt hopeful, but my research showed that long term effects are unknown ~ there appeared to be no research studies that lasted longer than 6 weeks, plus it can worsen psychotic symptoms for some people). Having studied psychology, read plenty of empirical research, studied statistics, read personal stories of struggle & "recovery" ~ I have much more faith in psychologists (& they just happen to be willing to bulk bill!)....

Anyhow, I've come down of my "yogi high" now & am feeling pretty flat....

I hope to get to yoga again tomorrow & then it will be 3 weeks of yoga x 3 *fingers crossed*

Hope everyone is travelling okay today & especially @Former-Member & @Mazarita - that you are recharging your batteries!

P.s. @Appleblossom - what do you like about my verbal style?!

P.p.s. I hope you enjoyed yoga @NikNik...

Namaste,

A

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

@Former-Member I tried to explain it ... your use of metaphor, your values, your honesty, your positivity, your courage and your clarity... it all comes through in your writing.

Glad you have a productive garden close. I would be a hopless farmer, but I have enjoyed learning about gardening as an older mum ... didnt have a back yard as a kid ... go vegies ..

I have known and lived with a lot of people with schizophrenia and understand acute and chronic states. I just dont hear the same sort of paranoia and blame in your posts ... maybe you are censoring yourself ... clear anger at a clear trigger is different ... and normal ... and I believe that that was the way out of it all becoming an undifferentiated mess and confusion of thought.

Eg., I spent days and months and years listening and eventually getting my husband to drop his CIA paranoias. He really wasnt that important to the CIA ... it was an inverted delusion of grandeur. I am talking about that sort of thing. He still is not a trusting person but lives fairly free and comfortable life. I dont like the CIA particularly and we could agree about that ... just not let fear of it from intruding on our lives.

You are lucky you have found a psychologist who bulk bills and YOU DESERVE IT.

The different professionals look at life through their training ... a carpenter will look at wood and think about grain and constructing things out if it ... there are simply limits to psychiatry. if the individual doctor has done his/her own inner work and has a lot of compassion they may be good ... but if they have gone into it for the prestige or money of being in medicine ... then .... may be less attentive to the details in their patients that could bring about relief from their distressing symptoms, with psychotherapy and less pharma.

I was horrified that a mhu wanted to give ECT to my son on a first episode ... we turned it around and they "extinguished" that idea, but I feel for you. I also have seen a lot of tardive dyskinesia .. and just want to support you ... but wisely ... not with relapses ... go gently bella.

Hi @Appleblossom...

Thank you for my comments about my writing 🙂 - I got an A for English at the end of high school - I was pretty proud of that. When I am emotional my grammar gets very sloppy & a part of me feels bad or like I'm failing even more... I try to remind myself I'm not writing university essays at the moment! Interesting observations re my experience of schizophrenia & others you have observed/been involved with. I actually had a delusion of persecution recently regarding someone on here. I thought they had got access to my medical records & were purposefully triggering me to see if I was actually unwell enough to be on disability & have a carer. This delusion was influenced by the knowledge that when my partner was settling his legal case ~ the lawyer of his ex employer suggested we were both committing fraud. Anyhow, I was able to work through that delusion with the help of my psychologist & partner. I have had many delusions that loved ones were trying to harm me & or torture me. I have called the police on my partner (& been taking to hospital ~ psych ward!) for two years avoided all contact with my mum, as I firmly believed that she was trying to harm me. I had delusions of reference that confirmed it for me ~ news articles & tv shows etc. At one point I lived in fear that the government was going to torture me to death &then that they were torturing me to death... Extremely scary experiences. (Harm has been replaced with a word not allowed).

All psychologists I have seen (since ECT anyhow ~ can't remember before - they didn't have the better access scheme then, so I can't remember how I afforded it ~ I think I was relying heavily on my psychiatrist at the time) have charged me little (a psychologist who worked in private practice ~ also worked at Relationships Australia ~ I paid a hefty fee to see him originally as he was highly recommended & he told me about his other workplace & charged me $5 a session!), I've seen through student services or have bulk billed me.
I'm glad your son didn't have ECT! I obviously don't know the exact number of treatments I had, but I was in hospital for 5 months & I vaguely remember that they started with 4 treatments a week. After I left hospital I had out patient treatments for about 2 months I think.

Thank you @PeppiPatty I'm trying to remember what to reply to... We will try to grow tomatoes first I think (I know technically a fruit!) I would like to grow fancy lettuce, but I think my partner might have to make a small greenhouse so we can do that. I gardened as a kid ~ although I only remember because of a photo.

I am very tired... I was reading my yoga magazine before I checked my emails/FB... Same magazine I've been reading on & off for a month or so ~ good value ~ big articles ~ few ads.
Thank you for your support...

Just really exhausted...

Namaste,

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

That all makes sense as to how you are in your current situation. So you had a profound knowledge of fear and lack or trust. @Former-Member That is what paranoia is about.

My most paranoid times were always drug inspired and so it was easy for me to come off the green. Also as I associated with people who smoked a lot I heard references to paranoia ... a lot ... but not in a clinical sense ... until I read my father's hospital file. So gradually I try to put my people's life experienes into perswpective ... so I can see them as more than just a diagnosis. or as a person who was to provide me with a cushy life ... which obviously did not happen.

The only time I ever called the police on anyone was when my ex partner's ex partner went missing after an access with my step daughter for whom the Supreme Court had appointed me as a guardian.

However my mother used to call the police on many people during her life, but never to protect me ... hmmmm. The policeman eventually found her and was glad I had alreted the local police to her situation as there were a lot of drugs going around in front of little girl 5-6 yrs... there was no real flare up ... or trouble .. just a little reality check for biological mum to behave ... and my oldest girl came home just 3 hours later. it meant a lot to me ... the gentle but appreciative tone of voice that the policeman used to me during that incident.

In the last 10 years I have had a deep distrust of my mother's motives and actions as that was backed up by exclusions and hostility and lack of appropriate discussions ... I see it as responses to a real triggers. Not a late onset of schizophrenia at 45. As both my parents had that diagnosis ... I have tried to be very clear about things ... also trying to turn the family destiny around... for self and for children.

Namaste ... happy gardening.

Have you heard of the "5 rhthyms"? I went once with my old yoga teacher .. she loved it .. called it a yoga teachers' night club .. with no alcohol.

Hi @Former-Member

I've been reading a lot, but not posting so much this week, I'm feeling really heavy and tired. But wanting you to know that i'm reading, and it makes me feel so much less alone that you were thinking of me too.

You really are amazing, im so glad you are here on the forums. I hope you are able to get to Yoga this week and that it helps, as well as your other supports and strategies/skills that you have to help you get through these reductions.

Hugs,

LJ

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

That's okay @Former-Member!! I'm glad I helped you feel less alone. ❤️ Namaste & thank you for your kind words...

I am feeling alone right now - I'm exhausted & need to distract. I don't know what to do. I'm too exhausted to do much... Offspring would do the trick, but we are yet to buy season 4&5... Feeling lousy...

I do get very paranoid - my partner says I get "elaborate theories" I'm currently paranoid that everyone is either silently screaming at me to take more meds again or thinks I am well & should go back to uni & get a job tomorrow... I know you probably don't (or at least I hope you don't), but that is an example of what goes through my mind. I can't read body language well & with technology & social media there is less & less face to face contact with people anyhow... I have a lot of trouble trying to work out what people's words mean & have to often hold myself back from completely cutting everyone off & try to think of alternative meanings to people's words or lack of.. People not replying to FB messages or comments ~ or sms's or phone calls is hard for me to cope with...It is like a combination of generalised anxiety & paranoia goes into overdrive plus the " no one cares" & "no one understands" that goes with depression...

Sorry,

A
