Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Thank you @Former-Member & @Jacques...

I just have to ride the storm out with the withdrawals... My psychologist is very supportive of my journey to reduce medication. (Probably more so than my psychiatrist - but she is the president of a volunteer organisation to help psychological interventions be used more frequently for psychosis) I think the even worse depression was triggered by a ptsd nightmare. I have been ruminating about the people who hurt me & triggered my mental illnesses to be severe & debilitating.... My battery on my phone is running flat. I have been distracting by reading & watching movies. I got very upset with the John Grisham novel I just read ~ in the end it turns out to be very stigmatising to schizophrenia equally violence. On a positive note I re watched The Soloist - a beautiful film about schizophrenia. I have a new realise to watch tonight - miss you already.

I'm sorry you were rejected @Jacques - do you want to talk about it? I have to put my phone on charge now. Anxiety is creeping up on me again...

Thank you both for your kindness,

Namaste,

A

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

I am so glad you are distracting @Former-Member, would it be possible to slow down your medication reduction, maybe plateau the medication when times get tough, just till your mind adjusts to the changes?

Yes lately i am struggling with the stigma of MI, i am finding myself easily triggered with news stories and such.

have you seen a beautiful mind? it is a fantastic movie about Schizophrenia.

It is ok @Former-Member i don't want to distress you anymore, I spoke to @Appleblossom about it. It is difficult to deal with, i have always been hated by society, i should not have reached out, i know i will always be rejected. i just hope i am not rejected from this forum too 😞

Take care Anna, enjoy your movie and try to rest as best you can. i know the heart ache of ruminating, i do it often, it is not an easy cycle to break.

hugs my friend

Jacques

Hi @Jacques & @Former-Member...

It may take a few months to adjust to working again @Former-Member... Hopefully in time it is not as tiring & you have energy for pilates or yoga (or other self care &/or pleasurable activities). I hope you are finding the work rewarding & meaningful... I've been reconsidering my future career goals & am considering social work again. My psychologist suggested it & my partner seems to think it is a good idea.....Yet another reason why I want to get off the psychotropic medication. University study has been very difficult for me in the past (even though I was capable of distinctions & high distinctions) & I know it will be easier with a clearer head.

@Jacques... I am already reducing the antipsychotic very gradually... every reduction is going to be difficult for a month or so... I just have to ride out the storm. I am actually coping a lot better than the last 3 reductions (observation by my partner & own realisation) Thank you for your caring concern...

Another thing that has been stressing me is my housing commission application. I decided last night as I was lying in bed worrying about it that I would 'let it be' for a few weeks. It is quite complicated & therefore stressful.

I don't know why you would be hated by society @Jacques ~ you are a kind hearted, caring person & I enjoy interacting with you. People are very ignorant regarding mental health problems & stigma is still a big issue. I have lost many "friends", because they did not understand or want to understand my symptoms.... I have a lot of interpersonal issues ~ it is amazing that I have been with my partner for 12 plus years!

Yes, I have watched A Beautiful Mind a number of times. It is a great movie. I do like The Soloist better though. I have also read The Soloist, but prefer the movie (which is always rare!)

The movie last night was a good distraction & enjoyable. My partner made my favourite dinner meal - vegan bean burritos - yum!!

I am feeling much better this morning & looking forward to yoga. Anxiety is starting to creep up on me though.

Take care all,

Namaste,

A

Hi @Former-Member,

Yes i do understand government agencies can really stress you out, i have a big stressor comming up, i am going to have my DSP discontinued i think next year, so back onto no money again, it was so tough having no money for 7 years last time, i am trying to save this year for the time ahead. i hope your application is successful it would be nice for you and your partner to have a home of your own, away from family.

I am glad this attempt of medication reduction is going better than in the past. it is always difficult going off meds.

You are so lucky to be in such a loving relationship, i have pushed all friends and family away to protect them from me, i have only this forum as a support network now. i don't know why i am so disliekd either, i know it is something about me, but i don't know what. anyway i am used to rejection, i have had to deal with it my whole life. it has become part of who i am.

I am going to try and find the soloist, a beautiful mind brought me to tears, my aunt has Schizophrenia and it helped me understand her condition and made me scared i am going the same way.

i am so glad today is a better day for you, enjoy it while it lasts, cherrish it and use it to get you through the tough times. that is what i do 🙂

Namaste Anna

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Namaste, everyone. I'm not posting as much on the forum this week because I am struggling to process things happening offline. Paranoia lurking around a lot after each of the extra outings I am going to. Combined with erratic sleeping, I'm feeling emotionally exhausted and not able to engage here as well as usual.

@Jacques, I have had hard experiences with social groups on the net too. The main thing that has troubled me over the years is trolling. I think the only thing I ever really did wrong to make me a target is being too enthusiastically present on internet sites in the past and mainly posting my creative works, which obviously not everyone is going to like. This kind of thing has been dogging me on and off for years. I just had another trolling moment last night. At this point, I get momentarily shaken by these experiences but it quickly turns to a feeling that these poor people spending their time doing this are the really pathetic ones.

I tell you this to let you know that it is not that society hates you. Just that the internet (and life) is a bumpy experience at times and difficult and unjust things do happen to most of us. I know how hard things like this can be but please try not to take it as something to attack yourself with. This kind of stuff says a lot more about those who are doing it than about us. They are the ones with the much bigger problems. In your case, it is an injustice you have experienced, again something that happens to many of us. Again I say, it doesn't mean you are hated by society. Certainly at SANE forum, you are very well appreciated.

@Former-Member, thinking of you even though I'm not writing a lot at the moment. Glad you are processing the medication reduction better than in the past and that you have so resourcefully found a psychologist to support your decisions about medication at this time. Hugs to you.

@Former-Member, just want to chime in with more of what the others are saying about adjustment time needed in your new situation with work. You have taken this on with courage and determination. I believe you will make it in this endeavour and that it will get gradually easier and more natural to do with each week that passes. You have done it before, which says to me that the resources are there within you. We are all here cheering you on.

If I've neglected anyone here, please forgive me. As I said, I'm very preoccupied at the moment. Earlier in the week my doctor diagnosed me with COPD and put on a steroid inhaler in the mornings. I also get the results of a chest x-ray today and am nervous about anything else that might be found after my years of heavy smoking. Not so surprising things are getting a bit on top of me at the moment.

Thanks for being here everyone.

At the docs. All good news today. Sorry, don't think I should have posted that last message in such a spun out state. Thanks for bearing with me at times.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Thank you @Jacques...

How do you know you are going to lose your DSP? I know you have said you no longer see a psychiatrist due to bad experiences, but you really need to find one to support your case to stay on DSP. I know you live rurally & many hours away from a city, so I suggest finding one who can Skype with you. Having no money will cause enormous stress & any decent psychiatrist would not suggest that someone with chronic agoraphobia etc is able to work. Please be brave...

Dear @Mazarita... No need to be sorry for anything! I'm sorry to hear you have COPD - I did a quick google search on what it is. Can it be cured by giving up smoking? (I didn't get that far with my googling - will be nice when I have a laptop again!) I'm glad there was no more bad news today!

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. I hope you restore a good sleep pattern soon. No need to feel you HAVE to be here for anyone - thank you for your words of encouragement & yes, I will accept the compliment that I was resourceful ~ thanks!

@Mazarita - you have said wise words to both @Jacques & @Former-Member...

I have been involved in chatrooms for depression & more recently schizophrenia. Now I just come here for support ~ I like how moderated the forum is (although I get paranoid if one of my posts gets taken down). Chatrooms can only be moderated so much ~ I was even a moderator! There are trolls, which you can kick &/or ban, but there are also just nasty people. Once someone wanted to see what I looked like, so I shared a few photos & they went on a tirade of how unattractive I am & how my smile looked like I was about to eat someone (I have been called beautiful or pretty many times & many, many people compliment my smile. I know not everyone will find me attractive, but there was no need for such meanness). I went to these schizophrenia chatrooms from late 2010 to late 2014. I briefly ventured back last year, but did not find it helpful. (I was going to talk about it more, but it isn't worth it...) Anyhow, my point is sane is a good place to get support ~ thank you to the moderators!

My yoga practice was helpful today ~ I have such an amazing instructor ~ she is so creative ~ every class is different. She also seems caring & when you look in her eyes you see peacefulness.

I am feeling low & emotionally fatigued now...

We have started a garden ~ we have sunflowers, lavender & gazanias so far. Matt prepared the garden bed bit by bit over several weeks & I enjoyed planting the plants. I enjoy watering them too!

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

hi @Former-Member, they have changed how the DSP is granted, you need to have a government certified phycologist verify you have a serious MI, and i don't see one.

I know it will cause stress, last time i had no income my mum gave me $500 a year to live on, it was really tough to pay for food, clothing and bills on that, i lived on cheese sandwiches for lunch and dinner every day just to survive. it made me very sick at the time.

I have sort of resigned myself to the fact it was always a temporary thing haveing government payments, i knew i was not going to get them forever, mum and i are trying to save as much as possible to try to live on after it is discontinued.

I will see when the time comes what they require me to do then see if i can meet their requirements.

Thank you for your conern @Former-Member, it is heart warming knowing someone cares 🙂

Namaste

Jacques

@Former-Member

I loved both The Soloist and A Beautiful Mind . I hope @Jacques enjoys The Solist when he finds it. I have watched and read most things about MI before the internet came online.

I also thought that @Mazarita 's long post was clear and caring. It didnt seem spun out to me at all.

I also thought it was an interesting discussion about trolling .. and respect and appreciation for this forum.

Take care all.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all...

Sorry for my ranting in Friday Feast... I usually turn my anger inwards, but today I was feeling particularly frustrated with my psychiatrist's high fees & the stress they are causing me. I am exhausted of being a mental patient. I don't like psychiatry & wish I had only ever received psychological treatment. Open Dialogues is an example of an effective treatment for psychosis which uses little or no medication. It was developed in an area of Finland & they reduced the incidence of schizophrenia by 90%. You can watch the documentary on youtube if anyone is interested.

@Jacques you need to find a qualified psychologist then. You can't survive on $500 a year - well you probably can, but not in a good state of mind. Please reach out for help.

@Appleblossom - thank you for your encouragement in the other thread & I'm very glad the future is looking brighter for your son.

@PeppiPatty - thank you for your concern & kind words in the other thread. I am sleeping okay at the moment thankfully & I definitely do drink enough water! I actually drink too much as the antipsychotic causes excessive thirst.

Well done on your dramatic reduction in smoking @Mazarita!
