Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hi @Former-Member & @Jacques......

Sorry I didn't reply properly last night. My phone battery was low plus my partner put on The Runaway Jury & I was missing the start! The Runaway Jury is another movie adapted from a John Grisham novel. The movie was a good distraction. I have re-read 4 John Grisham novels in the last few weeks. They are easy to read, so it is helping me get through tough times. However, I feel like reading something different. I choose my books very randomly. There is a site called goodreads where you can get recommendations based on a book you have enjoyed reading. Sometimes I just go into a book store & read the back covers & choose something that interests me. I like to buy books through a site called booko though, rather than a bookstore. Booko tells you what online book supplier has a particular book the cheapest. It can work out a lot cheaper than buying from a bookstore. Anyhow, I am rambling.....

@Former-Member Sorry to hear your mood is low & you are having problems feeling motivated. You are so brave going back to work & I'm sure in time you will get used to it. You will learn how to manage all the different compartments of you life again. I have read bits & pieces re the domestic violence you endured & you are a strong woman to come out the other side of that. I hope your children are happy & getting the support they need. It sounds like you are a wonderful mother. Keep going!!

This morning I woke up at about 6:30 & needed to go to the bathroom. I brushed & flossed my teeth (I don't floss often enough! Anyone else find dental hygiene difficult to manage?!) & washed my face. I felt ready for yoga in a few hours. I went back to bed to rest & then as it was getting closer to the time I needed to get up to get ready I felt tired & unmotivated. I got motivated right before it was time to leave & got ready in 10 minutes! I'm glad I went, as I would probably still be hiding in bed now otherwise. Also, it means I accomplished my goal of going to yoga 3 x this week (& last week). Partners in Recovery paid $500 towards a $590 6 month membership, so that helped motivate me just in time this morning too!! I need to make the most of it! Yoga today was okay - I did have intrusive depressive thoughts, but at least I didn't feel panicky & nauseous trying to breathe the yogic way (in through the nose, out through the nose). I'm still working on the breathing - it is hard. I also didn't feel faint! I had beetroot juice at home, but stopped at a shop on the way & brought an apple juice. I was pleased, because the tag said it was $3.50 & somehow when she scanned it it was only $1.40!! My yoga teacher was encouraging. I always place my mat near her so I can get more guidance.

@Jacques - I have been writing this message for awhile now & I have forgotten what I wanted to reply to you. I am sorry you are struggling also, but I'm glad you have supportive people on these forums to help you keep going. Thank you for supporting me.

So far I'm feeling a lot better than yesterday. My partner said I'm handling this reduction in dosage a lot better & I can see that. It is different though. The other reductions resulted in increased paranoia, anxiety & irritability. This time I'm struggling with increased depressive symptoms.

Hope everyone is having an 'okay' day.....

Thanks for reading my rambling.....

Namaste,

Anna

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I've been struggling immensely the last few days. Crying, feeling pointless, tired, feeling like everything is my fault, suicidal... It didn't help that I had a bad headache on Tuesday & missed yoga. Or that we have had to endure 40 degree days. Today I went to Brisbane to see my psychologist & it helped a bit. I felt heard & supported in my journey. Bit emotionally exhausted & don't know who is listening... (I am safe)

Hope others are travelling better than me...

Namaste,

A

Anna, i am always listening, eve nif i don't respond, i think of you often, wonder you you are going.

Did anything happen to make you feel this way?

I have been struggling this week, been rejected from another social group, a big hit to my self-esteem & self-worth, but i am keeping busy and distracting any way i can.

Oh no @Former-Member, i am so sorry.

It may take some time to get back into the swing of things, how are you sleeping of a night? i don't know how you do it, i can't stay awake for more than 3 hours at a time, do you think it may be a side effect of your medication?

I have been sending positive vibes to you my friend, i wish they would have helped, thinking of you often.

I hope you manage some rest this weekend. i hope things get easier in the future, i was so hoping things would have settled for you by now.

hugs

Jacques
