Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

@Shaz51 - have you applied for DSP for your husband? If so did you have a good psychiatrist who recognises the debilitating nature of his mental illness? You have probably said this already somewhere along the line.... But if his mental health is getting worse - can you apply again? If you on DSP you can work 15 hours a fortnight? Or it might be 15 hours a week?

How did you meet you girlfriend @Jacques?

Thank you @PeppiPatty

I'm feeling really alone....

My partner said something I said to the barrista at the almost vegan cafe was "weird" - I almost burst into tears & asked not to go into the fruit shop. So we didn't go into the fruit shop - I said I start saying strange/weird things when I start going psychotic - he kept asking me what was wrong - I explained again everything people say or don't say I am analysing over & over - he asked me to list names of people - I did - he told me to "slow down" - maybe not talk to people when I'm stressed/ - so what am I supposed to do? It really gets to me when we are at a cafe & he is looking/using his phone most of the time... I see my psychologist tomorrow... hopefully it helps more than a little for once....

feeling really fat - struggling with body image also...

got to yoga today... was very tired but was able to do crow pose again - as well as another arm balance for the first time - scales pose modified with bricks @CherryBomb

Hello @Former-Member xx

we have applied for DSP for my husband many times , but it is tooo stressful for him to go through it again , last time we applied, he nearly took himself back to hospital again, I did get him to drive home but he was unwell for days

so he made me promise that we don`t do that again

thankyou for thinking of us my friend

how are you today ??

Fair enough...

Does he see a psychologist? I'm just concerned that his mental health is deteriorating, but you both still need to work to survive...

I'm not good. Just feel really alone, even though I'm sitting next to my partner - but he is watching a movie I'm not interested in - the new Independence Day... I feel really depressed....

& tired...

Hi @Former-Member,

I met my girlfriend online, he had known each other for about two years and started a relationship not long ago, it is my first girlfriend and even though I am still learning how to navigate it, it makes me happy to feel loved and respected. I never thought I could meet such kind caring and loving woman.

Oh @PeppyPatty that is beautiful. How are you and hubby and Mr. Arlo?

I really applaud those who can manage their symptoms without medication. For me my mental state can fluctuate even on meds. No I don't like the side effects but I don't like the alternative without medication. I want to be stable for my daughter and don't want yet another hospital admission if I can help it.
Best of luck on each of our unique journies

Dear @2angels

Great topic..can you start a thread on medication versus no medication ? Its very interesting that you brought your daughter into the decision as well.

DEar @Jacques

It's so lovely to see you. How is your girlfriend? Please send her my fond hello to her. Arlo says hello, he is always happy to see you !! My husband is very good. He is doing his budgetting for the week.....it's our favourite time. He nags to save for a musical instrument and I nag to get jewellery and we both end up just getting them after budgetting after a long time.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi @Jacques...

I actually met my partner through a depression chat room/forums 13+ years ago - before we met in person we were communicating as friends - we had both come out of bad relationships & were not looking for anyone - mine an abusive one. He gave me his phone number in case I ever needed to call someone to help me - that is the kind of person he is - always willing to do things for others without thanks or benefit - very rare in our society I have found... Anyhow, I ended up in a public psychatric ward for the first time & none of my family & friends would come to visit me & help me get discharged, so I called him. I remember so little of our first moments & years together & that is why I strongly disagree with the use of ECT, but he tells me I was having a panic attack that a stranger cared more about me than my family & friends & on one of our first "dates" or more like 'spending time together' we went to a movie & I sat one seat away from him (that is a bit funny in retrospect, but I was so intensely scared of men due to the abusive relationship & sexual assault - it is really surprising that I could trust my now partner at all! For years after that trauma if I was going to see a doctor & they were male - I had to go with my partner or I didn't feel safe) Anyhow, I'm glad you have found someone to love you @Jacques & to love

Thank you @PeppiPatty

I have continued to experience symptoms on all medications I have tried - I have never been stable because of medication - medication does not make me well or able to function better - it makes me function worse & it certainly does not keep me out of hospital..... I had been on medications since 2003 - 2014 & my partner quit his job to become my full time carer & help me get off the medication - it is a very very slow process, as I have tried to do it fast before & have quickly relapsed badly & been put back on maximum doses again. I feel like people assume I am reducing the medication BECAUSE I am better BUT NO I am reducing it to be able to live a fuller life - to be more alive - NO I can't be certain that it is possible, but because I have support I can try... I would like to have 1 or 2 children & I don't care what the doctors say about some medications being safe when you are pregnant & breastfeeding - I am not going to be taking psychotropic medication when & if that happens....

I saw my psychologist today & I felt very heard regarding the degree of paranoia I'm experiencing... I think it helped. We also caught up with a friend we first me in 2009, but we don't see much anymore due to living away from Brisbane - talk a bit online though.

Anyhow 'The Wrong Girl' is about to start & also need to eat dinner....

Namaste,

Anna

@Former-Member I have really missed being able to discuss issues around mental illness without excessive defensiveness and escalation when I was younger. I believe it is importnat and one of the best ways through if it is possible to keep trust. No you did not trigger me. You were sensitive and clear and respectful when you expressed yourself. I have felt similar to you often when I was younger.

@Jacques You did not trigger me. Maybe I shouldnt have pulled you into the discussion, but I am glad you did continue to post. AND I am glad you finally have a DSP. I did not relaise that.

I am struggling financially, a little as my son has avoided all Centrelink contact so I am struggling to support him and run the house and car on a pension for one. It is starting to get stressful, and I am getting behind, but he just put in 2 weeks board at 60 pw from his busking, so that will relieve my credit card blow out.

@Former-Member Sadly I too am in borderline psychotic land ... due to a whiole swathe of other stressors. I had a flare up yesterday and ended up in emergency at my local hospital and I was so distressed and upset becasue a lady who works at the emergency had not been nice to me about my struggles to get my son out and about. I had known her for about 8 years. In our last rehearsal in my last big concert. She was going on about how easy it was for her to recover from her cancer and get her job back etc etc. It was enough to trigger me big time, but I couldnt say anything .. just focussed on the concert that week. But the thought of seeing her at the desk with my escort of 8 burly police and ambos terrified me. My son came in and maybe they just wanted a lot as they were be careful if either of us flipped out.

There were many stressors from my real life. So today I have started on my first anti-psychotics, because the relaxants are not working and I had high enough doses. I guess there will be no reductions for me for a while. I am ok, but will need to pull back from a posting a bit. I have really tried to use what I know and believe to be good practise to get things rolling along here on the forums in a good way.

I am grateful for all the wonderful people I have met and shared stories with. I doubt I can stay away too long, but need to do a great deal of self care.
