Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

i'm sorry that things are so awful for you right now. i hope that the medication helps and that the side effects of going on them arent too bad. are you in hospital still?

please also remember that the forums are here for you to jsut be supported as well without you needing to always support others. you deserve to be cared for as well.

hope you are ok,

Hi @Appleblossom

I'm so very sad to hear of your awful experience yesterday. I have found antipsychotics to be very powerful in reducing the impact of psychotic symptoms although they can knock you around. I loathe antipsychotics but if I ever need them again I will not refuse to take them.

I realise that the last couple of weeks have been inordinately difficult for you but given the circumstances I strongly urge you to visit regularly so that we can support you through very difficult times.

Phew! ! managed to keep my eyes open long enough to get a post to you tonight.

Must sleep. My phone has already hit the floor a couple of times in the last 10 mins.

Dear @Appleblossom

You and me have worked so hard on ourselves since we joined this site.

Often I read your messages and put your suggestions into action in my life.

It has taken us both a while to be honest with our supposed diagnosis but let me be clear here @Appleblossom.....you are a VERY intelligent kind lady.

It makes me remember on Sunday, my husband and I went to church and another person in the cogregation was asking what did I learn in Psychotherapy?? And I said just to get through my son's illness........and I jokingly said that at least I know what neurotic means....and out of the blue Giles says: And I'm psychotic........

We all crumbled in laughter......

On that supposed diagnosis that we get told we have; we get no support, carers and loved one's are not taken into consideration, even sometimes egos are mixed in them from Psychiatrists and Gps.......They don['t even day: Okay, you are basically a normal neurotic but when under stress, you have a tendency to go slightly/ strongly/ psychotic. They don't explain it to you like that.

I also have a tendency to go a little Psychotic. I get tiggered by stress. I get stressed very very easily....even when I speak to people. I get incredibly tired and stressed and overwhelmed.

It feels your a little like me. It is great that you are self caring yourself. I thinnk that you are just a quirky hard working gal.

PPx

You are joking,,,,,,,did @Jacques get disability support pension?? Golly, thats absolutely fantastic.

Wow, you relationship and mine sound so similar, my story is almost the same, it is so nice to wake up each day knowing someone loves and supports me, i am just thankful to her for choosing me.

we are going slow, we want the relationship to work long term. Because we both suffer MI we have not spoken on the phone yet or met in person, but things are going in a positive direction.

thank you for your kind words. i hope things go well for you and your partner. sending you healing hugs

Hi My virtual mum @Appleblossom

It is ok, i did not mind being part of the conversation, i was just worried i was too forward in my comments. yes, i have the DSP, it was quite a shock when i got it, but they insisted.

I understand you struggling, mum spent all her life savings and nearly lost the house to care for me for over a decade. i feel so guilty for how she has ended up, i am doing all i can to help her out and make her life comfortable.

hugs my friend

Jacques

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Yes @PeppiPatty, i did get it, all because my mental health had slipped so much, it was a very distressing time and i still feel guilty i have it when so many others are in need or are in a much worse MH situation than me.

I am trying to do the right things with the money to make sure the tax payers feel i am not a burden, even though i feel i am.

hugs @PeppiPatty
