Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hey @Former-Member, I haven't actually read the research you're talking about regarding these long term effects of those medication but I'm sure I'd find it interesting, I've definitely noticed some interesting and somewhat unexpected changes in my psychology since I've changed my dosage

Hey @Former-Member, I haven't actually read the research you're talking about regarding these long term effects of those medications but I'm sure I'd find it interesting, it's good to be informed but you've got to look at things critically as well, like you said, a big ask when you are somewhat unwell. I've definitely noticed some interesting and somewhat unexpected changes in my psychology/physiology since I've changed my dosage but it's early days yet really (4 months) when you consider my diagnosis (schizophrenia)

Hey @Jacques....

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling a lot - I am also struggling, but trying to take it day by day too - I probably sound quite upbeat here & to me it seems the people around me think I am doing really well (except my partner who is concerned about my increased paranoia & anxiety) - it can be frustrating when people can't see how hard you are working to 'hold it all together' & not end up in hospital, but I guess even people without mental ill health might experience that? Or some people like to show a persona or life that looks better than what it is to keep up appearances... All people struggle - a little or an enormous amount, so try to always be kind (what I try to keep in mind) My motto is: Be a kind human...

Anyhow, I hope things improve soon *hug*

@Shazab - I don't think I can share links to the research here, as SANE takes a neutral stance & it may be seen as me advocating for all people on psychotropic medication to reduce or stop. Also it is extremely important you do it with support & medical supervision. All the best - yes, I have a diagnosis of schizophrenia too (as well as major depression, PTSD & generalised anxiety)

Namaste,

Anna

Hi @Former-Member

Yes I feel the same, every one in my life say I look normal and they can't see anything wrong, some of them even go as far as to say I am faking it because I am too lazy to get a job.

I think unless you have experienced these terrible diseases you have no clue as to how people suffer.

My girlfriend can't get the DSP because she is not mentally ill enough, even though she has made 5 attempts on her life this year and has been in the mhu 6 times.

I wish people would be more understanding, more compassionate towards all illnesses and not just physical ones.

My mum is the only one who sees me suffering every day and night.

I understand my friend. Please be gentle with yourself.

Hugs

Jacques

Hi @Shaz51

When my father had motor neurone disease, he had to prove to centreline every 3 months that he was still dying. It was so distressing for all of us. Especially towards the end of his life.

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hey @Jacques & @Shaz51 - I know it sucks.... I think the diagnosis - fact that I have - schizophrenia is what got me on DSP. I wish I could study & have a career.... I worked as a waitress & children's party entertainer after high school before my mental ill health became debilitating ~ I was severely depressed, anxious, had an eating disorder, but wanted to work.... Then I just couldn't. Trauma happened ~ my brain 'broke' ~ welcome ptsd & schizophrenia & what I already had even more severe...The problem is some people don't want to work & apply for disability to get more $$ ~ it makes it much harder for the people who really do need it to get it.... Sorry. Take good care... I'm really exhausted - sorry if I didn't word this well

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Sorry, just paranoid now you think I'm judging you both & or your girlfriend Jacques ... I tried to study first & then when I couldn't do that I had to get medical certificates every 2 weeks for a year before I was approved for disability - I was in and our of hospital, suicide attempts etc. Sometimes it takes them to realise that you are actually too ill.... Couldn't even finish watching a tv show I enjoy on tv.. Just completely drained today... Take care
