Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hi @Kurra & @Shaz51....

Thank you for your kind replies....

My surgery on the 12th has been cancelled - they left a voicemail - I have to ring up tomorrow to see if that means the surgery on the 26th is cancelled too (they are doing one side - then 2 weeks later the other side) - it is very frustrating... This toothache saga has been going on for 5 months apx now.....

@Kurra - we don't usually have a lot of snack food! Fortunately he got up & made dinner soon after I pressed send. We had bean chilli con carne. Monday we had bean burritos, which we hadn't had for ages, so they tasted extra good. Tonight my partner is making pizza.

@Shaz51 - I like chamomile. However, lately I've been having peppermint - the anxiety is messing with my digestion etc at times.

Sorry, I took so long to reply...

I spent very little time online on Sunday - I needed a break - was on facebook for about 5 minutes all up! Then I had a bad headache for 1.5 days apx...

I no longer feel on the verge of psychosis, but I feel suicidal & I have this overwhelming feeling of just not wanting to talk about it - I don't know if that makes sense - I just feel liked I've talked & talked & talked & talked for 13 + years.... ('I'm safe....)

Anyhow...

Namaste,

Anna

Re: Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

I'm pleased to hear that you've improved a bit @Former-Member. It can be such a looong slog. I'm not in to snack food much either although I do have sultanas and carrot sticks etc on hand to stay the wild beast in my stomach if needed.

@Shaz51
It's a good thing you mentioned soup. I'm making a shopping list for my meals next week which I'll cook today. Separate the meals into single serves and pop them in the freezer. Tadaa no cooking for the rest of the week! I trust you're going well my friend. Hugzzz 💕 💜 💕

Hi @Kurra & @Shaz51

My partner made a deep dish pizza (vegan of course!):

Amazing!

I saw my psychiatrist today - she noticed that I am "flat" & struggling - she didn't ask the same 25 odd questions she has been asking for awhile, which was a relief - as that was becoming very monotonous & I tried to steer away from that.... She thought it sounded that I felt "stuck" - I said it is more exhaustion with people.... I said I don't feel stuck if I'm on track to reduce medication, which leads to potential to become a mother &/or go back to finish a university degree. The surgery being cancelled means I won't be able to reduce the antipsychotic next month... Hopefully I can reduce it for the third time this year in December. I reduced it 3 times last year. Only 2 so far this year.... slow & difficult process.

I had about 3.5 or 4 hours sleep last night... I'm tired.... I hope I get a much better sleep tonight, as I haven't been to yoga since Sunday (no yoga in mornings on Mondays or Wednesdays - bad headache Tuesday - Brisbane today) - I really need a yoga fix!

@Shaz51 - I love pumpkin & sweet potato soup - that is what my partner is planning to cook for me when I have the surgeries - we had a lot in winter, but haven't had any for awhile. I used to cook a lot for us - I just became even more unwell & now we don't have a proper kitchen - I just don't. Sometimes I make a salad, haha - it is becoming salad weather now!

Namaste,

Anna

Hey @Former-Member Those dishes look amazing. I am more into food than I have ever been. I actually enjoy planning, preparing and making when I dont have a million other things to do.

My reduction program needs to be in portion size for food as well as meds ... but I think your approach is very wise. It is so good to be doing the very slow and steady approach.

Re Psychs - My old psychologist threw out at me that I would be on meds for life .. but she did not have a lot of interesting or relevant questions to engage me either. For me it was more the discipline of just going to appointments with her than any real therapy. Now I am glad I can up my expectations. Reading about others' experiences on the site has helped adjust my expectations ... from sheer desperation .. and usually on the edge of psychosis to .. having them as a part of my health care team ... that is a HUGE shift for me .. not just a thought I could layer on .. but had to emerge from beneath .. kundalini rising ... but slow .. grdual ... not explosive.

My new lady suggested that summer was a better time to reduce meds .. I could take her caution on .. but at least she indicated that there were possibilities ... and I can always work with that.

Take care Bella .. always a pleasure to see you on the forum

and you @Former-Member and @Shaz51

I am going to my first carers meeting today .. and sons' gf is coming over so Vegan dinner .. and he is busking again.

I have been out in the garden .. its glorious out at the moment .. but wont last long.

Always

Hi @Former-Member, @Shaz51 & @Appleblossom....

So lovely to receive messages from you all!

@Former-Member my appetite is actually a bit low at the moment due to anxieties (generalised anxiety + body image anxiety) - I usually eat the most at dinner - it certainly helps when my partner makes delicious food! I hope your appetite improves soon & in time you regain your enjoyment of cooking. I'm sure I will enjoy cooking again one day in the future. I hope work is going 'okay' & your children are well. Keep on going - I know you are doing your best & think of you.... Oh, the surgeries - I still have an appointment on the 26th of October - when I saw the surgeon for a consultation appointment apx 2 months ago - he said they do one side first & 2 weeks later the next side - I haven't received a letter yet, so I'm a bit concerned the 2nd side is going to be done more than 2 weeks after the first - oh well..... At least the pain didn't remain constant over the 5.5 months - I have a low physical pain tolerance, but a high emotional/mental pain tolerance...

@Shaz51 *sends yummy vegan food*

@Appleblossom I'm glad you are enjoying food & cooking more than ever! Why does your doctor suggest summer is a better time for you to reduce medication? Do you feel a bit lower in the winter? I'm not saying it is wrong - I'm just curious of her reasoning - if you want to share All the best with reducing medication & food portion sizes! x What kinds of things do you make when your son's girlfriend comes over for dinner? How is your son going with university? I hope he is well. I hope you are still enjoying your music too. Oh, yes - I have been told by doctors & various therapists that I will need to be on medication for life - I refuse to believe that is an absolute - although I do think I will need to see a psychologist for a lot longer than I will be on medication....

I am struggling with paranoia, but just doing my best to get through each day - yoga helps heaps with that. On Monday I went to pilates for the 2nd time this year - just for a change & because I knew I needed to do something (& every time I plan to go for a run I experience insomnia & can't go - but I will try again & again until I can get into some sort of running routine again...) Oh, I won a 3 month yoga membership - I came 2nd in the 21 day yoga challenge! (They said it was close between me & my winner - all my facebook & instagram points!) I will try even harder next year (if I can) & I may just win 1st - 6 month membership, new yoga mat, massage! Oh gosh, I could of done with a massage! I've had tension in my neck, shoulders & back for agesssss now - I use a vegan muscle rub with arnica... helps a bit, but I think I do need a massage.

Anyhow, I'm getting tired of writing & need to get my laundry going!

Namaste,

Anna

p.s. How are you @Jacques? @Kurra? @Mazarita?
