Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hi @Former-Member I'm glad to hear that you are going a little better today, though it sounds like you are feeling some pressure from your psych and partner about the medication. Fingers crossed that yesterday released something so that you can feel that hope and motivation come through a bit more. Fingers crossed you can get out for some exercise tomorrow, whether its a run or yoga 🙂 your yoga teacher sounds great!

here listening,

LJ

Thanks @eth & @Former-Member

I'm putting pressure on myself re the medication too - want to speed up the process & finding it hard to be patient.

I'm feeling really tired now - I have picked out running clothes for tomorrow, but the way I'm feeling it may end up being yoga... I think I only slept 5 - 6 hours last night & I have not napped today. I'm still not looking at my phone when trying to sleep - keeping up the sleep hygiene....

I read this afternoon & started to enjoy my book more - & watered the garden.

Just watched a movie - was a bit triggering with alcoholic vommiting & emotional screaming.... Didn't end properly (one of those movies), but at least the alcoholic was in rehab....

Feeling pretty low...

Thanks @JoseJones....

Feeling any better @Former-Member?

I read in Night Shift you enjoyed your visit with family @eth - that is really good. I am feeling really disconnected with my family....

Namaste,

A

Hello Butterfly

I am back from a music thingy.

Sorry you had a tough time, but I feel you are dealing with things honestly and wisely, even if you are overwhelmed and feelings are all over the place. That is the best any of us can do. That is why I pushed the like button. It takes courage and determination to keep at it. Dont push the meds thing .. if you can get proper medical support by progressive thinking medicos .. all the better ..you have had complex medical interventions ... slow and steady is best.

My daughter had a feinting thing and it happened when she was stressed. It was not put on as it was obviously related to stressor. The other daughter had a blood nose stress release. Their different styles worried me a lot and I took girls to doctors about it. They really dont understand that much about the human body ... I was told not to make too much of it ... that one was a feinter and the other a bleeder ... honest doctors try and admit their areas of doubt or ignorance .. others blame the patients ... we all need to be active in making our health decisions as well.

I think you are amazing and brave. Take care Bella

Hi all....

I haven't had the energy to participate on the forums lately...

My partner is going to have surgery to join his non union clavicle break on Wednesday. It will involve a bone graft & plate. It has been broken for 2 years & he has been on the waiting list for 1.5 years. (I have been on the waiting list to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed for over 2 weeks now - thankfully the pain has died down - although I still have to take painkillers nearly everyday...) Anyhow, it is great that my partner is finally having surgery, as he never sleeps well - in his words - he has probably had a good night sleep 5 times in 2 years. He is also in constant pain & I personally feel his mum has expected far too much from him & a lot of things he has done for her on the farm have caused unnecessary (in my opinion) pain. He however wanted to keep busy & feels like he owes her - although he has done so much work that would be worth thousands if she paid people to do it & I personally feel like she doesn't appreciate what he does enough... Anyhow, he won't be able to do anything for awhile & *fingers crossed* she doesn't push him & he doesn't push himself to do anything that will hinder healing too soon... I am very apprehensive about my ability to cope, as I will be doing all the cooking in the makeshift "kitchen" (in the cold), doing all the cleaning & doing all the driving for awhile.... Last month when I saw my psychiatrist she said I could reduce the antipsychotic next month (this month) or the next - well now it will have to be the next... hopefully....Yesterday I saw my psychologist & it was horrible - I went through a massive pile of tissues - crying profusely - unable to make eye contact & try to figure out body language (which I struggle with at the best of times), hyperventilating, felt hot & cold, shaking, collapsed when I was paying etc etc. I forgot my morning dose of antipsychotic, so that played a big part - but also I'm just feeling a strong sense that - I am not enough - & that I am failing - even failing at therapy - & fear that my partner's surgery could end in the worst possible outcome & I will be alone & worried how I will cope while my partner is recovering etc etc Plus my family is stressing me - still have to cope with seeing/being near alcoholic/not having own bathroom - side effects from medication - most annoying & frustrating & tiring is excessive thirst/overactive bladder....

Still going to yoga on average 3 x a week - a few runs... Hot vinyasa yoga tomorrow & a 4 km charity run for Nepal on Sunday. I'm really using yoga as therapy, but I feel like my psychologist doesn't understand the effort or the therapeutic effect - meditation, breathing, strengthening mind, moving body - endorphins (strengthening body as bonus side effect) & expects more - & I don't have the energy....

Anyhow, I'm exhausted - I've been trying to make the cabin tidier today - I feel like no matter how hard I try I can't make it clean, tidy & organised enough - due to lack of space & running water (although the running water situation is being fixed - sort of - before the operation - if a part arrives in the mail - don't know what is happening if it doesn't - more to worry about..)

Namaste,

A

@Former-Member

It's so lovely to 'see' you around the Forums and really glad you're using the forums for support. You have a bunch of people here who really care how you're going, and who I can already see, are supporting you (especially in Friday Feast tonight).

So much is going on for you at the moment - and coming from all directions it seems like. It's times like this that it's helpful to take one day at a time. It's such a cliche, but I find it helpful because thinking so far ahead can be overwhelming.

You seem to have such a good awareness of what is helpful for you (don't worry about your psych who doesn't see the full value of yoga and meditation ) The key is to ensure you use those strategies and trust they will help, even if it's just to get you through that day.

The forums are always here when you need it 🙂

Hi @Former-Member

Just read your post and I wanted to wish your husband all the best for his surgery this week. And I really hope you will be okay. Sorry to read that you had a terrible time in your session with your psych.

Take care and wishing you and your husband all the best.
