Support needed, support given ~ no religon or politics please...

Hi all....

I reduced my antipsychotic dose on Monday night. My psychiatrist said I could when I saw her late last month. I waited a week & a bit as finances were extra stressful.... I had extra of my benzodiazpine last night. My psychiatrist approved an increase of the dose of benzodiazpine, but I haven't needed much extra yet. I slept half of today (unusual for me lately) & then my partner got me out of the cabin & to a cafe. So far I just feel slightly more anxious & a feeling of detachment. I asked my partner how I seemed & he said "despondent". Last year I reduced the antipsychotic dose twice: the first time I remember an increase in paranoia & anxiety plus irritability. The 2nd time I was extremely anxious & irritable. That happened in the first half of the year. In the 2nd half I was hospitalised twice for a total of 2 months. I had some psychotic symptoms (I did even on maximum dose), but the main issue was the antidepressant I had been taking since 2012 started to give me more frequent & disturbing vivid nightmares, which were often ptsd related. It is a common listed side effect of that medication to get vivid dreams. Therefore, I withdrew of that & tried the newest antidepressant on the market, but experienced persistent nausea. That meant that I had then tried all the newer generation antidepressants - some more than once. I tried a tricyclic, one of the newer generation again & a maoi. I decided to try a mood stabiliser I had been on before on a low dose. Now I am just on the mood stabiliser ~ no antidepressant. The dose is the typical dose for depression. It took about 4.5 months to feel like it was helping or "working" ~ although it may have been placebo effect, time & yoga practice that actually helped. Anyhow, I am back on track now to be able to reduce my medications. I found the psychiatrist who is helping me by googling "holistic psychiatrist" ~ my partner rang the practice & the receptionist suggested my doctor instead of the one I found online. From the beginning I made it clear that I wanted to reduce my medications. She has been mostly supportive, but at times has tried to increase dosages & wanted me to have ect. I have had to be assertive & determined ~ a hard ask at times when I have been extremely suicidal. I have read research that found long term use of antidepressants increases episodes of depression & long term use of antipsychotics increases episodes of psychosis. Also lots of research on benzodiazpines causing anxiety & depression plus addiction. The research is convincing & I'm tired of the side effects. I have now found a psychologist who specialises in cbt for psychosis. I feel if I can get through these difficult withdrawals I will be able to manage my mental illnesses & live more fully. My partner & even my psychiatrist have said I am more alive now.

This is my journey ~ I'm not trying to convince others to go off their medication... I just want support & people to know I'm not doing it because I am okay, but doing it to become more okay ~ if that makes sense...

Please talk about anything in here. I just need a thread without religon, which is triggering to me.

Namaste,

Anna

Hello @Former-Member

How are you going with your project to reduce meds?

I am staying on mod dose of antidep but using relaxants more often, deciding day by day.

When my son is steady .. I might bring mine down more. We just cant afford for me to have melt downs.

We got off track on this thread .. and I just wanted to bring it back to you .. if you want ..

I've left a message on nightshift with just a tic..
And haven't gone back
How are you @Former-Member?
I didn't like taking meds for a long king time. Now I need them and on most ever. I think it helps with my husband on more meds than ever
I will be on and knowing how difficult his life has been.
How is the Psyxhiatrist @Former-Member?

One funny thing happened yesterday .. re meds .. I intended to take an extra but had a mini panic attack within the bigger one ... during it all thought I had lost an hour and rushed out of the house an earlier than I needed to.

I just want to report that singing and the train rides really did calm me down. I took extra to sleep, but it is good to try all options.

Hi all

Sorry... I haven't updated here... It's a struggle - lately I wonder if it is going to be worth it....

I was prescribed antipsychotics late 2003 & I stopped taking them early 2007 - the diagnosis at that stage was schizoaffective etc - & with the severe depression & onslaught of PTSD - I hadn't really accepted the schizophrenia part - I had my most severe psychotic break in 2008 - the actute stage of it lasted 3 months & I had a huge delusion re my mother for 2 years - Lately I am being reminded of this traumatic time in my life, as facebook shows you your memories on this day - my status updates clearly indict I was very unwell - I don't know why no one intervined - it is hardly suprising that I eventually went missing for a week - also today my partner found pictures of my cat Biscuit who died late 2013 - I've been waiting all this time for him to find the pictures, so I could print them - I felt very sad today as he only found the pictures of 2008 (when he was a kitten) & even in the photos I took I can see how I was unwell... Yeah, so worried even if I do get off antipsychotic - a year later WHAM??

Anyhow, I'm really exhausted - don't feel like writning or explaininng much tonight - spent 1/2 hour crying on the ground in the dirt next to the camping toilet - partnerr was resting in bed & sometimes I don't feel like explaining my distress to him, as he seems to go into "fix it" mode a lot of the time... SOmetimes you just need to cry. He doesn't understand that crying helps.

Well, I'll struggle on... I see my psychiatrist on Thursday, but there is no way I can reduce it again - even though I would love to speed up the process...

RIP Biscuit - best cat ever - in my heart always....

Hi @Former-Member

You dont have to explain or even go off the anti-psychotics. I just like talking to you and think you have a lot of courage. I have lived with years of uncontrollable crying. A danged nuisance, hard on the eyeballs, Didnt have any sunnies then to hide behind. If the tears are there, they are there. I have sometimes gone bush on my own and curled up in the bracken and cried and felt connected to the earth though not to the rest of the human population. That period seemed to last forever in my life but it is in the past now. Change is slow but always there. I am ok with talking medical labels or not .. as all my loved ones had fancy labels but they were just people to me. Thinking of you .. liked your impetus in starting this thread .. thats all .. no pressure.

Hi....

I did my best to be cheery & upbeat in Friday Feast last night, but I had one of the worst mornings in a long time with probably 2 hours of tears on & off & screaming & feeling completely misunderstood & even "attacked" by my partner - blaming myself for everything & extremely suicidal - I eventually wore myself out & fell asleep for quite a few hours & felt a bit better when I woke up - especially when I eventually had a shower (I skipped a shower the day before, so I was stinky & felt 'ick'....) I just wanted it to be known that life is a struggle for me at the moment (I don't think many people understand or care to understand....) I think my partner & psychologist probably have the best idea... But at times like yesterday morning - it seems my partner does NOT understand! Sigh... it is all so hard... My psychiatrist wanted to increase my antipsychotic again even though I did my best to appear like I was managing the distressing symptoms. I don't feel like she is going to support me all the way to being medication free. My psychologist knows of a psychiatrist who is very anti ECT & apparently supportive of people reducing medication - in Brisbane & actually bulk bills. I haven't changed over yet as it is always a big thing telling your story to YET ANOTHER health professional. I am also worried as he does not have an affiliation with a private hospital. My partner almost took me to the public hospital yesterday - I begged him not too - I went there last year & was treated like a criminal by the intake nurse & one of the psychiatrists asked me the most confusing & distressing questions & they gave me different medications which made me feel dissociated - they sent me the discharge papers - I was upset by what I read. They sent a copy to my psychiatrist & she said they sounded very judgemental.... Anyhow, I'm glad I'm not in hospital today. I went to hot vinyasa yoga & enjoyed the practice today. I talked to the instructor about how I had been feeling discouraged with my yoga practice lately (before class) & she helped me get into a better frame of mind, so that I was physically & mentally stronger for the practice.... I feel sometimes I just need to completely break apart (like yesterday morning) before I can find hope & strength again.... That was my 3rd yoga practice this week - I'm trying to decide whether to run or go to yoga tomorrow - I think I will set my alarm for a run & if I'm not up to get up & go, so early - I'll go to yoga... I wish I had the energy to do both! Anyhow, I think I'll go read my strange novel now or just rest.... I didn't get much sleep last night....

I had to edit this post & would just like to say I have been treated extremely poorly by several public hospitals - I once complained afterwards & was given feeble excuses as to why a nurse had the so called right to accuse me of pretending to faint when I had low blood pressure "stop this behaviour" - no one was held accountable & it was my fault.... It seems to be acceptable to traumatise the mentally ill in psych wards - in all of society really... Probably will get asked to remove this - if so I give up....

Namaste,

A

@Former-Member, that sounds like a very rough experience. It must be so awful to go into an environment like that when you're already suffering and at your most vulnerable, and feel like you're being judged in that way. Good to hear you're feeling like you're in a better frame of mind at the moment and ready to tackle some exercise tomorrow. I hope you manage a good night's sleep tonight to recharge.

Thinking of you and sending you support @Former-Member I have had similar experiences with hospital admissions and then also no support after discharge. I think you're amazing the way you keep up your yoga and running.
