Living with depression is debilitating!!!!!

Living with depression is debilitating!!!!!

Hi everyone,

This is a first for me & to be trithful I have no idea where to start. What I do know is that I've hidden away from the world so much that I've come to realise I don't have any friends anymore. It's a situation of "the more I hide the worse I get and the worse I get the more I hide". I think there are many reasons for me becoming 'agrophobic', some of which are ten years of DV, conned that I lost everything & topped it all off with breast cancer. You will notice I didn't mention depression...well that's because I've lived with it for over 30 years & it's just become part of my everyday life I suppose. Don't get me wrong, I'm not flippant about it (well I wouldn't be on here if I was) & it is very real. In fact I had it fairly well under control until the begining of that 10 year period at the start of 2000's. I had a back injury at work & that's when my life started to go downhill. I'm not saying that's what caused it as there were a few reasons around that time (the start of the dv relationship, excessive drinking, etc & all while working full time). I've become an expert at the cover up over the years. In fact at one point I had my photo in the local paper for being voted the happiest customer service person for that month. I've always remembered that with irony, if only they'd known what my life was really like. There was a fair bit more to come, (in fact a lot more) & am willing to share if the discussion leads to that & I feel comfortable enough.

Anyway that's enough of the background for now, just thought I'd start this discussion with some idea of who I am. The strange part is I now have good reason to be happy...first thing that came to mind then was "what a joke that is'. My depression is at it's worst & I just can't seem to get back on top, even as a breast cancer survivor. I try to remind myself of the positives in my life now & none of it helps. I have in this state mostly for about 18mths now. Had meds change, now told it's as good as they've got etc etc.

I hope some of you will join in this discussion so we might be able to help each other along the way.

Sandy, I was born and raised in Hobart, in the tiny , in your terms, the City of Glenorchy. Moved around for about 30 years, no more that ten Kilometre radius, and now am a stones throw from whence I started the stupid roundabout we call life. I have one , no two, regrets I had to leave the job I was "married to" and ended up with devastating MI. I survive as best I can. The only thing in life I am positive about is having the MI until I go some where else. I have been to Hell and back, and been rejected so I am destined to roam as Dr. Who does. That will suit me to the ground, I may even find the Ultimate Question, that being the answer to All MI.

I really feel the need here to say something about the suicide of Robin Williams and even Charlotte Dawson. If these famous people and especially ones with no problems finding money to help them are killing themselves from being depressed and feeling there is no hope, what message is that sending to us little insignificant people? Damn it thete is no hope!
Shit we are a cruel society where we let people suffer even until there dying breath.

Dear Peace,

I went through a period of feeling there was no hope as a result of the loss of Robyn & Charlotte. I had always put my inability to get help down to the fact that I don’t have private health insurance in addition to paying my Medicare levy.

I am guessing that Charlotte and Robyn would have had access to help from people who were genuinely interested in helping them (as opposed to a clinician resentfully agreeing to provide a one-off bulk billed consultation). Eventually I was able to come to conclusion that, as with a range of other illnesses, sometimes, regardless of a high level of care and expertise being available, it is not enough.

Having said that, more has to be done about access to services for people who don’t have private health insurance in addition to paying their Medicare levy. One of the stated objectives of Medicare is, “to give all Australians access to health care services with priority according to clinical need”. Medicare fails miserably in access to services for people with major depression – surely people with a diagnosis of major depression should be categorised as having a high clinical need.

@peace,

mental illness knows no boundaries!

It reminds me at the end of the day, that we share the common experience of what it means to be human.

Re: Living with depression is debilitating!!!!!

Yes, I was saddened to hear that Robin Williams had died of depression, a more appropriate term than self murder. It seems to be a reasonably common illness in comics and clever people, so there is an upside of the disease, does that make sense?

I have lived with depression for almost 40 years ( glory be!). Of course, there were many times where I attempted to truncate my life. The times I tried to get off the anti depressants were interesting, I really could feel any happiness draining away like water out of a bath tub.

Society is cruel, but it was MUCH MORE so in the past. If I lived back when, I probably would have been in an institution, chained, paraded for the ogling citizens, tormented by my keepers etc.

FairyFox, “That's the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it's impossible to ever see the end.”

“Some friends don't understand this. They don't understand how desperate I am to have someone say, I love you and I support you just the way you are because you're wonderful just the way you are. They don't understand that I can't remember anyone ever saying that to me. I am so demanding and difficult for my friends because I want to crumble and fall apart before them so that they will love me even though I am no fun, lying in bed, crying all the time, not moving. Depression is all about If you loved me you would.”
― Elizabeth Wurtzel,

“because wherever I sat—on the deck of a ship or at a street café in Paris or Bangkok—I would be sitting under the same glass bell jar, stewing in my own sour air.”

“The sun stopped shining for me is all. The whole story is: I am sad. I am sad all the time and the sadness is so heavy that I can't get away from it. Not ever.” This quote describes my life to a T.

Love all these pics loopy.. It is tough living through episodic or ongoing challenges but I do think eventually we all find our purpose and path in life..despite all of the ups, downs, hurdles, dead ends, hook turns and moments of flight, fight or freeze..we can live that is valuable as we all have personal value..just looking around the Forum..in awe of the years, nay decades of lived experience this forum is building..our storyline s merge and diverge and its being a part of this community has been giving me hope and continued belief in the power and testimony of lived experience..

Re: Living with depression is debilitating!!!!!

FairyFox, As usual I just glance at posts to get a little info, but tonight I read you post about three times. I won't say I had a tear in one eye, it was in both, running down my nose onto the key board, waterproof thank goodness. Let me assure you, as well as I can, you have more friends than you would ever imagine albeit on line. It is so easy to, at the time to falsify happiness, then falling back is so far down. People often say, "well at least you can.........."

To me you have a super ability to survive. Believe it or not we have both had similar life experiences, bar that horrible "C" . I broke my bag at 18 joined the Taspol at 30, stuffed up 17yrs later, DV three yrs later and lost a fortune in the breakup. And I can count my true friends on one or two fingers. But I seem to have many soul mates in this forum because we have/are all in the same leaky boat. After such a short time on the site I fell that I know some many of the members as if I have known them for years. Sometimes it is easier to read between the lines that read what is typed. My heart aches for you and so many others. But that is what old people do through life experience. Gotta go before I flood the place.

Virtual huggs all round.
