I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Distress Tolerance // Tues 17 July, 7pm AEDT

I have found what really helps to identify my emotions is by keeping a DBT or mood diary. This is a really great way to identify not only my moods but when they occur, what they are triggered by and patterns in my moods.

I avoid conflict because I can't handle the distress it causes me.

That's no problem at all @BlueBay Sounds like a good decision to take some time out and get a bit of rest. Thanks for joining in and I do hope you're feeling better soon.

@MoonGal - yes walking or dancing - might be the after care - once I am through the distress.

Yes, thanks for the refresher on Mindfulness @Former-Member

It's a work in progress.

I'm aware of the concepts - but still get caught up in the emotions, although perhaps less intensely.

The Struggle Switch link video was really good. I've seen it before (can't remember when).

Keeping a mood or DBT jounal is a great way to see patterns and to be able to head off potentially triggering days/events if possible @Sans911

@Swisschoc1

Don't you find by avoiding conflict, although it decreases your distress, it can leave feeling cheated, disatistified and unheard? How then do you get your point across or have your feelings acknowledged?

Re: Topic Tuesday // Distress Tolerance // Tues 17 July, 7pm AEDT

@utopia I was thinking about the kind of situations that are people provoked, where I might be WITH someone else who has caused (or my reaction has caused) my distress and not wanting to be any odder than I already am by suddenly leaving to run, walk or dance! Maybe though if the distress is happening alone, it might be good to get into your body straight away, and have your body lead the way OUT of the distress. that would take practice and need some of those skills others have mentioned like breathing, STOP, etc.

What a great strategy @CheerBear I also like your use of language there. Sometimes it can be worth asking ourselves, how do I notice when I need to put the breaks on? How can I effectively do that to avoid getting caught up in distress?
