I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Facing your feelings is what distress toelrance is all about @emiweena What helps you to sit with big emotions?

Having some time and space to have an objective look at my reaction before I make my next action. Not always a luxury with 3 little kids at home!

My psychologist said something about the adrenalin running through the body at this time and that it's good to them use that adrenalin in a physical way. running, walking, dancing. Do you do this during the distress or after?

Mindfulness and meditation are really useful for managing distress @Adge. They teach us to be aware of our emotions and thoughts without getting too caught up in them.

Another important component of mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment in a non-judgmental way. That means letting go of all those unhelpful thoughts that judge ourselves and our emotions. Thought like - "I can't cope" or "I can't do this" - and preferring instead, to shift our attention to our breathing, body, sense of smell, sense of touch, or the sounds around us.

I think perhaps having a list of emotions handy on my phone or something to look at and focus on to identify the ones so I’m not delving to far into my mind to a dark place. Perhaps exploring those feelings when I’m well and feeling safe to look back on when I’m not so all the ‘tough thinking’ is partially done???

@utopia i would think you would do it as a 'warm down' after the distress, having caught we are distressed, make a decision to do something to actively alleviate the adrenalin, so going for a walk or dancing. You'd have to KNOW already you were adrenalised and make a plan to be able to do the activity without it being an 'odd' reaction to any given situation don;t you think?

I find focussed breathing is often my best friend when I am heading into a distressed state - it is the one thing that can help me to be more present

Relates to the next post below @utopia Physical activity can be done when we start to notice feeling distressed and is particualrly good for feelings like anxiety and anger.

I can relate to how difficult it can be to get that time and space with kids around @emiweena! One that I relied on a lot when mine were littler was a 15 second STOP. Stop, Take a breath, Observe (what am I feeling, thinking, sensing etc), Proceed.

I still use it sometimes and find it can help put the brakes on during a heated/hectic moment.
