Lost and confused

Lost and confused

Hi I am new here. I had a major breakdown at my work 22 months ago, it lead to chronic severe major depressive disorder, long story short, I have spent over 100 days in hospital this year, due to severe suicidal thoughts and self harming. It was over 5 admissions, my work place of 24 years has turned on me, even though my breakdown was their fault and I am on work cover, they said some things after my first hospital admission that really hurt me, and my condition got quite a bit worse that it was alredy, which was bad enough, my self harming is almost every day now when I am not in hospital, last Monday I had to go to emergency medical attention, and even though I said I didn't feel safe they only kept me overnight. Seems I have spent too much time in hospital now and they just want to send me home asap. I see a psychiatrist every week and a psychologist every week as well, my psychiatrist also wants to keep me out of hospital, which is why I see them both weekly. I have managed not to self harm for 5 days since Monday's hospital visit, but did slip up in a minor way today, I still am, so I am not liking my chances of being able to resist the urge for too much longer. I feel like even going to emergency is a waste of time for me now, as they just want to send me home. I feel like my life is over, and I am just breathing, waking up, surviving and going back to sleep, my work place even though I am still employed there for now (haven't been there this year due to not fit to work on my certificate), they won't let me on the propery and also have banned some my workmates from talking to me, and others have just chosen to abandon me, and I miss working and miss my workmates despite their betrayal. But I can barely get through a day without a major struggle, and don't cope with any stress.

@skyehaven

Wow, what a tough job you had. I can only imagine making assessments to euthanise animals must have been incredibly challenging. And there's no need to make you feel guilty for it all. That's pretty harsh and unfair.

Do you think perhaps your job breakdown was a whole lot of repressed trauma and guilt just waiting to explode? It sounds a little like it might be. And I'm sure you love animals right?

I don't see you as a lost cause, and I'm pretty sure your new pyschologist will feel the same. I see you as someone who's probably really caring and giving, a little sensitive (and nothing wrong with that), who right now is in a world of emotional pain. And really, really suffering.

My experience with hospitals have been very similar. I even manage sometime to be asked to leave.

So keeping safe, and away from hospital unless it's an emergency, is obviously a priority for you right? Have you ideas to keep yourself safe tonight? What gives you hope, apart from the new pyschologist? Even it is something small, it's worth it.

Are you safe at the moment. How are your suicidal thoughts?

Re: Lost and confused

@Sans911 I don't find much hope in anything right now, I am clinging on to the psychologist out of desperation.

My psychiatrist has been good, but I feel like he is at a loss about how to help me, he doesn't want me in hospital anymore except for wound care.

I do love animals, and have show dogs, but even they trigger my guilt and I can't connect with them anymore.

I think I am safe at the moment, but I am really emotional.

I have the usual thoughts of wanting not to exist, but no current plans. Self harming thoughts are always around.

Re: Lost and confused

Has your psychiatrist said they're at a loss how to help? Or have you asked? Sometimes our depressed brains feed us false information, but it might not be the case. Have they given you any coping strategies for self harm thoughts? Or do you have any of your own?

Good to hear you don't have a plan. But how can we bring down these intense feelings? What have you tried before? I've got lots of things but there's not point telling you to do this or that if it doesn't work for you.

Re: Lost and confused

@Sans911As for my psychiatrist, yes possible my depression talking, but still the impression I have. Strategies I have tried a rubber band on my wrist and flicking it for a sting, holding ice, just digging my nails into my harm, none of them relieve the urge at all. Distractions, like coloring in, audiobooks, mindfulness apps, sometimes when not too intense they can delay it long enough for the feeling to pass, but only if not too intense. Part of the problem is it comes on suddenly and intensely often, and I don't seem to be able to intervene early enough because of that. If I don't harm, I get much worse emotionally

Re: Lost and confused

I was going to try not to post, as sure people are sick of me whinging. But I need to, so sorry.
I am a bit of a broken record. I have never felt more like I am a burden on my friends than I do now.
I am really doing badly again today, just feel like an emotional mess. I miss my work so much, despite everything and I feel like it is killing me. Not just the fact I am not there, but the fact they don't want me there. I care so much for my workmates and miss them, despite them abandoning me, I really want to not care, but I can't. I can't help how I feel, to me they were like my 2nd family.
I hate feeling like this all the time, 22 months of hell, with the last 6, since my work rejected me causing a continuous downward spiral. I made myself go for a walk today as it was finally dry enough, I have my gp tomorrow, I am meeting someone for coffee Wednesday then have psychologist appointment, catching up with an ex workmate Thursday, bathing 2 dogs for shows Friday, possibly have psychiatrist appointment Thursday or Friday or early next week. Showing dogs on weekend. This is forcing myself to try and get better, but it doesn't help, never has, then I get more upset because no matter what I do, the downward spiral continues. Then I feel like a failure because I couldn't make it work and exhausted from faking being ok in front of people
I spend so much time on helplines, just to try and get through afternoons and nights as they are killers for me, it often saves me from doing some major damage to myself, sometimes not so much. It's hard to keep calling to hear all the stuff I have heard before, to bawl through the call, because it hurts so bloody much.

Re: Lost and confused

@outlander I have a safety plan, but I am not great at following it when I am struggling this much. I will look at the links, thanks

Re: Lost and confused

I find the same thing. Its hard to even want to follow the safety plan sometimes @skyehaven

Is there something i can help with at all to help you ease your distress atm? Would it help to write down a few things and have the paper in view so when night comes around more you have some strategies in front of you?

Some people have a coping box, have you heard of these?
