Re: Sleep - Pain - Meds - Memory

Hi @Wanderer

I remember you said you had CPRS and that alone would make it really hard to think at times - then add the strong medication and also - insomnia - that would definitely get into your brain and have a go at your short term memory

I have spinal pain along with other orthopaedic issues - arthritis etc - and increasing age - I don't have memory problems unless I forget that I have - sometimes I can't fine a word but it's there all the time -

But for you - it sounds massive and must be really hard to live with - great idea someone gave you - if I knew where I could find an ironic emoji I would put it here - ah - write it down! First you have to remember to do that and then you lose the notebooks all over the farm and mostly likely forget that too

I don't know what's causing your memory loss but the above issues you have would not improve it and I care about that. I know when I am having a hard time with my pain I find it hard to remember the beginning of a sentence by the time I get to the end which is frustrating but that stops when the pain backs down

It's so good you have found us - it must be tough - I forget your circumstances now but stick with us - there must be other people whose medication interfers with their memories - if there is one there must be more

All the best

Re: Sleep - Pain - Meds - Memory

I understand @Wanderer

The journey into chronic pain is full of misunderstanding and disbelief - I found it hard to convince doctors the pain was so severe at the beginning - finally series of tests and then an MRI proved the truth of Degenerative Disc Disease and Spinal Cord Canal Stenosis - and yes - had they operated then it might have been different - possibly worse though because the surgery I needed was not happening then - now - as it is for you - too late -

Still - let's read back - a long wait for surgery that should have been done immediately and an 18 month wait - sounds like medicare - I am so sorry - it is hard when the surgery is delayed and should not be the case -

I take the strong medication but the - we can't talk about our regime in detail so it is nebulous - I had to stop driving - I really miss driving - I would so like to drive -

And I have cut my medication back a lot - but chronic pain is a life-changer and it seems to me that you have been through a similar mill

Thanks for your kinds thoughts also - I do wish you the best

Re: Sleep - Pain - Meds - Memory

Hi @Wanderer,

The memory gaps/losses and chronic pain sounds very frustrating and confusing. I’m not an expert by any means (and I don’t really know your background very well) but is there any chance that any of your memory loss is due to dissociation?

I’m only speaking as a layperson, mind you, but maybe this is something you might like to discuss with your dr or mental health professional. I’m not saying it’s necessarily the case of course (reiterating my layperson status once again again) but I have friends who dissociate and have huge memory lapses.

Hi @Wanderer

You are right - the chronic pain club is one no one would like to be part of - and I really don't have a choice re medication except to gradually cut back and find I have to increase again sometimes - and it was such a silly accident - I was riding my bike in a wind-storm and didn't even fall - I had to put one leg down to prevent that and pushed my spine out of alignment - but with DDD it was already well established - the pressure on my spinal cord started then

And of course I am sure you know we get back press at times - I understand the lonely world you must be in at times

And lost your world as you knew it too - lost so much financial ability - having to start again - really hard things - I have been through much the same stuff - I am an acccountant and loved doing that but I had to take early retirement a long time ago now

It's really great you are going to rebuild the mustang with your daughter

I wish you the best Wanderer - btw - I have lived with this pain for a long time - my story is under Our Experience and Stories - Life can be a Pain -I'll try and tag you - there are other people suffering with pain sharing on that thread - and it is a supportive group - part of this forum yes - but as well as dealing with the pain we have depression and anxiety - it is natural to feel these things - in fact really weird if we did not

Re: Sleep - Pain - Meds - Memory

Hi @Wanderer,

Thanks for explaining. Yes, that all makes sense and you seem to understand yourself well, which is great.

The chronic pain must really bother you as it clearly affects your daily life so much. Yes, I agree with you that it can be such a delicate balance between challenging yourself and living life and over-exerting yourself. But props to you for your self awareness 😊
