Why are they taking advantage of me?

Why are they taking advantage of me?

I have been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and depression and while some family members have been supportive through the years, some others have tried to take advantage of my illness to manipulate, bully, and steal from me. When I did try to speak to the people doing it they would completely deny everything and make a big deal about saying they don't know what I'm talking about, it's all in my head, in a completely over the top fashion, combined with their laughter and ridicule. Then they would say barely a second later now give me some money. They have done a lot of things to me over the years but I have never understood how and why they would do this, as I believed they were my family and that they cared about me. They have also encouraged members of the public to ridicule me in a behind your back, never directly kind of way, so that these so called family members could try to blackmail and extort money from me, and now I just get verbally abused everywhere I go, among other things. I have publicly humiliated time and time again but no one will help, in fact it is treated as an enormous joke that everyone knows except me. I don't know what I am supposed to do and the cruelty shown by these people is remorseless. How am I supposed to get help and get this scenario sorted out when the people involved, and the people I reach out to all deny it and/or refuse to give me advice. Why would my own family do this to me when I never had anything but love for them? I do not understand why they have chosen this path of both private and public abuse.

It is surprising to me, but with all that's been going on, the people around me (aside from sane.org) have not recommended a counsellor, they just want me to automatically change the way I think by saying I'm mental, as though I can change it on the spot.

The good ol' 'snap out of it' YUK!

You wouldn't believe how common this ignorance and misunderstanding is. We even have a whole discussion, called '9 things not to say to someone with a mental illness' where members have listed the terrible things that have been said to them or they have heard said about others.

I think it's great your stepping out and looking after yourself.

We're here if you need us!

Well I went to the doctor and asked for a counsellor, which he disregarded and just increased my meds. I explained that I thought it would be beneficial to talk to someone about my problems and how to cope with things, but he did not even reply, just asked me other questions not related to counselling then did not refer back to my request for a counsellor again.

What do I have to say to get a counsellor? Im serious on this because the words im using do not seem to be working. Im wanting ongoing help with things but all I have is more medication. I honestly believe that some support would mean that I may be able to take less meds, not more.

I'm reading about other stories on sane.org and I did check out the 9 things not to say to a mental paitient, and it's making me more motivated to find support, but I'm starting to feel that by the time I do get to speak to someone it won't be worth the effort and I'll just be sitting there thinking #$@& you.

Hi Amanda

I can really understand your anger at not being listened to by your doctor.

I want to encourage you to keep taking the steps to get the kind of support you actually need.

I am wondering, when you say 'doctor' are you referring to a psychiatrist or a general practitioner? It might be worth considering trying a different doctor, if your current doctor is not providing you the help you need. Of course, this is easier with a GP than with a psychiatrist.

I wonder if it is possible for you to see another doctor who is willing to provide you with a Mental Health Care Plan and can refer you to a suitable counsellor. You can also use the Austalian Psychological Society Website to search for Psychologists who have experience in certain issues. http://www.psychology.org.au/findapsychologist/

It also may be worth calling the Sane Helpline on 1800 187 263 Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm to chat about the best way to access a suitable counsellor.

All the best,

Victor
