Why are they taking advantage of me?

Why are they taking advantage of me?

I have been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and depression and while some family members have been supportive through the years, some others have tried to take advantage of my illness to manipulate, bully, and steal from me. When I did try to speak to the people doing it they would completely deny everything and make a big deal about saying they don't know what I'm talking about, it's all in my head, in a completely over the top fashion, combined with their laughter and ridicule. Then they would say barely a second later now give me some money. They have done a lot of things to me over the years but I have never understood how and why they would do this, as I believed they were my family and that they cared about me. They have also encouraged members of the public to ridicule me in a behind your back, never directly kind of way, so that these so called family members could try to blackmail and extort money from me, and now I just get verbally abused everywhere I go, among other things. I have publicly humiliated time and time again but no one will help, in fact it is treated as an enormous joke that everyone knows except me. I don't know what I am supposed to do and the cruelty shown by these people is remorseless. How am I supposed to get help and get this scenario sorted out when the people involved, and the people I reach out to all deny it and/or refuse to give me advice. Why would my own family do this to me when I never had anything but love for them? I do not understand why they have chosen this path of both private and public abuse.

Thank you for your reply. It appears you and the others on sane forum are the only ones who understand what I am going through. To date everybody else has denied it. How am I supposed to cope with the ridicule that comes from the people who know they can get away with these things if they blame my illness for it? I don't want people to harass me because they know that they have an instant excuse that most others will always believe.

Get as far away from them as possible. Tell them nothing. Find 1 friend/family member that doesn't share their desire to destroy your self image. Cross check everything with that one friend & ask them what happened/if your reaction is reasonable. This will help ground you. I've spent 12 months of daily work to learn how to deal with these people. There is no easy answer/easy fix. Habbits take time to change but you can & will find your feet. don't give up. don't give them the satisfaction. The best revenge is living well. Live the best you can x

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

I continue to live the best I can everyday, also to keep to myself and not talk about this, but i am being spied on in a tremendous way. This situation I am in is so far out of hand, and has progressed so far that no matter where I go I am always subjected to harassment and laughter behind my back. Some have even mentioned to me that my emails are being read, and sometimes I feel that these people giving me a hard time are the ones with the mental issues, because some of the things I hear them say are truly absurd. A lot of the time I feel like I'm the sane one walking amongst a bunch of crazy people. I do hear what your saying about finding a person I can truly trust, but at the moment I'm still trying to figure out who it is. It also appears the people who try to hurt me the most are offended that I still somehow manage to continue with my life, and they just make more and more effort to stop me from doing this. I have always done my best to get on with life, taking up new hobbies and trying to work out and stuff.

Some people just don't realise that my life does not concern them.

I will keep thinking about who I can trust and who I can't but this is a difficult process. It will take me some time to sort things out but I do hope I get there.

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

Finding people who care enough about me not to ridicule or reject me as been difficult. A long time ago I decided that I had to be trusting as that if I believed the negative things about others that it would cripple me with rage and anger. In some ways I was too open and trusting but maybe it was still the best choice as I am still here and steadily doing things.

Keep posting and encouraging others ... I dont know what else to do ...

cheers Apple

Hi Amanda,

Sorry that the people around you arn't people you can trust.

Are you able to elaborate more on the time when someone said to you your emails might be getting read?

Would you happen to know word for word what exactly they said?

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

I was talking to someone regarding a breach of privacy that I think I had, and while he was trying to discuss it with me he said your emails are being read, then he immediately started talking over his own statement making it a big deal asking if I had shared my emails and if I had told anyone about this or if anyone else knew what I was on about. It was like it was a slip of the mouth kind of thing that he tried to brush off.

I have also recently made some complaints to the police about things, I have also been in contact with a mental health team, and while the police are quite firm blaming my illness for this, the doctors I have spoken to seem to think I'm OK (2 of them). I had to specifically ask for a third assessment, and I worry now that my treatment will not be appropriate to what is really happening. When I try to discuss my issues with people they do not even listen and halfway through my first sentence they will interrupt me and blame my illness. Repeatedly.

Also, I did not even mention emails at all during the first conversation, it was a statement brought up by the person I was speaking with.

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

Hi Amanda,

So you mentioned to this person regarding a breach of privacy and then he stated "your emails are being read"-is this correct?

It sounds like he was just trying to figure out in his head how they would have gained access to your info and not that he knew with definity that your emails are being read.

Personally, i recently had a "hacker" go into my -email and access my banking info, so, quite a bit can be found out if they access a persons emails (im not suggesting this has happened to you and dont let it be a cause for concern).

Generally speaking,if a person has any privacy concerns, they can just download a reputable antivirus computer programme such as Norton.

Re: Why are they taking advantage of me?

Ok. But my concern was not the emails it was something else. I can get Norton anti-virus but it will not help the actual thing I had issues about. I was not even sure why it was mentioned in the first place. Im sorry if I'm sounding blunt about this but this whole situation is starting to frustrate me.

I don't know what to say anymore. I'm waiting for my next appointment so that I can get an appropriate counsellor.
