Making order out of chaos

Making order out of chaos

hey forum

I think this a thread that I want to make because it is inspired by a book I'm reading at the moment

I think there is a lot of chaos in our lives due to mental illness so I think making a forum on things that work for us would be a good idea

I will start with an example from self care:

When I feel overwhelmed and worried and concerned about myself and my life I always must remember that I am better than where I ever was about 7 months ago

Re: Making order out of chaos

Hello @MDT Resolve is what I draw on most to get myself through the life I find myself in now, and yes, I agree, it increased with age, although I also had a level of it as a younger person too.

I see resolve as a part of self discipline, or perhaps self discipline as a part of resolve, not sure which.

I need to be self disciplined if I am going to meet any of my resolutions to myself. Like this morning, I decided (resolved) to sleep in today and had to be disciplined not to get up and do what was once my Monday morning routine because it's not releveant here where I live. There are simple and complex resolutions.

Because of my experiences, the things that have brought me to being mentally unwell, and the things that I've experience because of being mentally unwell, I need that sense of resoluteness, of determination, to continue to seek betterment for myself. I used to be brilliant at seeking betterment for my kids and other family, not so for myself, so it's a newish thing for me to fight for myself in this way.

I have resolved to take this year to find betterment for myself before accepting there will be none and making whatever decision that might mean for my future. For now I resolve to live and to live at the best of my ability, to find enjoyment in small things where I can.

I agree @Former-Member
I think living at the best of your ability is all you can do for now. Enjoyment in small things is also important too. Thanks for dropping by

Re: Making order out of chaos

That's an excellent point you made @MDTAbout our having greater resolve, due to our MH problems.

Although many people, including some psychologists - depict us as weak, & they seem to think that we are...

Honestly, living with CPTSD, Sleep Apnea (daily fatigue), Scoliosis (chronic pain), & the after-effects of 3 major bowel surgeries (one majorly Botched) is not easy...

My psych says that I'm very resilient, even though each day seems like a major struggle.

Re: Making order out of chaos

Yes @MDT - I have experienced when facing mental health challenges in the past that it can create resolve to find the will to find a way forward - as I resolve not to give up. Really great thread - thank you for taking the time to share with us

Re: Making order out of chaos

I have scoliosis too @Adge although not as bad as it could be. This is the curvature of the spine yeh? That's what scoliosis is?
Yes some psychologists do picture us as weak. I actually have to fill out a medical form that requires me to inform them if I have depression or anxiety. I dunno why they want to know this but I'm gonna ring them up and find out. Weakness perception maybe idk..
Thanks @Former-Member glad you are finding it useful

What saves is the willingness to learn from what you don't know.

I am thinking that this is a very relevant point for me in my life now. There is a lot that I simply do not know. There are two unknowns. The known unknown (what will happen when xyz takes place) and the unknown unknown (where will I be in two years time).

Maybe embracing the known unknown is a good way to be. Think to myself that just beause I don't know exactly how something will pan out (how I will go at work this evening which I'm nervous about) does not mean it will go bad. Don't try to to pre empt things. If it goes bad then ride it out when it happening rather than now. Don't fall down the mountainside in your imagination before the possibility of doing so happens in real life. Bad events are bad enough and don't need to be lived over in the mind. Especially BEFORE they have taken place.
So what I want to do now is say that work this evening will be fine. Even if it won't go smoothly or something happens that doesn't help me.. Doesn't matter. It is what it is.

Re: Making order out of chaos

Yes that's right @MDT Scoliosis is curvature of the spine abnormally or in the wrong directions. Mine has been causing me horrendous back pain (muscular) for about 20 years.

If it's discovered when you're a teenager, they can correct it (with back braces & stuff) - otherwise they can't.

I hate those medical & job application forms that ask you to disclose if you have ever had anxiety or depression - I find those unnecessary questions very invasive.

Re: Making order out of chaos

Thanks for this tonight @MDT That's pretty much how I'm feeling about tomorrow morning - case conference with Administrative Appeals Tribunal and NDIS and my lawyers. Everything that can be done to prepare for it has been done and nothing I do tonight will change what happens tomorrow. So I've had a couple of drinks and I'm dancing to Gondwana Land's Boneman.
