Seeking mutual support from carers

Seeking mutual support from carers

Reaching out to others who are in a caring role. I look after my mother with multiple health issues, including depression and anxiety. I feel stuck. I can see the signs that the depression has reared its head but my mum doesn't see it. I really struggle when my mum's mental health suffers. I too battle with depression and anxiety. Emotionally, I am all over the place. Hoping there are some others out there who understand what I'm going through.

Very true. I'm scared atm. Im worried mum may be displaying signs of early dementia - doctors aren't sure, it may not solely be depression. I'm trying not to think about it too much. I hope you are ok xxx

In this situation I find it best to document the things that have been happening that are of concern and take the info to the doc appt.

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

hugs loveley. so much going on for you too @Bella1978 please remember to take time for yourself too. your mosiacs you can do while still monitoring her.

sleep would prob be a challange for you atm too with everything going on, try to rest and sleep when you can even through the day too

im hoping its your mums meds but if its not youll be able to get some more supports through carers and your gp as well like respite and maybe abit of inhome care too.

are you able to talk to your gp or your mums gp about your suspicions at all?

i was quite a mess when i thought pop mightve been getting dimentia too. im still thinking its possible but in the early stages atm.

i really hope its the meds luv. feeling stuck atm. and sorry for being so negative, have just really struggled today.

i took mum to see her gp today to go over her blood pressure and review her since being discharged. after mum walked out of her room, i mentioned to her that she has been forgetting - gp said she noticed. at this stage, im waiting to hear back from mum's psych to let me know when mum can be admitted to mental health clinic. i know im probably getting a bit ahead of myself re: dementia. its just that the symptoms mum is displaying are those of dementia.

its just breaking my heart atm, and im scared for both mum and me. im struggling with the thought that i may lose my mum. i already miss her as she is behaving so differently. im sorry outlander.

are you okay?

x

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

@Bella1978im not accepting your apology because theres nothing to forgive. theres nothing wrong with what youve said and you are allowed to be negative sometimes too yknow.

its good her gp has noticed as well. it can be hard to tell what is causing it with more changes happening like meds, hospital visits etc. hopefully she can be admitted soon and also undergo some psychiatric things like dimentia. if its that i think there are meds for those as well that might help. theres more options these days. i do understand, its scary, and heartbreaking and watching people decline and watching them loose themselves as well as us loosing them is alot to handle esp on your own.

what are some of the things your mums displaying atm besides the forgettfullness if you dont mind me asking?

have you still got your uncles support, your friends, carers aust, the support group?

try to have things for yourself too even if you invite your friends over for a cuppa and chat (just about general life etc) otherwise that soical life will start to go as well

im struggling mentally and physically but trying to be ok and distracted here for a while. abit of what happened todays on my thread but no obligation to look or respond at all

@outlander

thanks for your message sweetheart *mwah*

i just hate being so negative, thats all but i can see i am struggling mentally atm, especially with my anxiety which isnt helping my thought process.

ive always been close with mum . i know thats why im struggling with this so much. she is my rock and has always been there for me. feels like she is slipping away from me though. her behaviour is changing - she gets irritable quite quickly, which is very out of character for her, her moods change quickly, and she will stare into space for lengthy periods of time whilst shaking and nodding her head. there are other little things she is doing out of character for her but they are the most notable ones.

2 of my friends wanted to come over today but mum wasn't up to having company. and im too exhausted to go anywhere! bleh

yes, still have my uncle's support, havent contacted carers wa this week but my counsellor did call me last week to see how i was travelling which was nice. havent been to a support group yet though luv. one nice thing is that my sister has been doing some cooking for me and mum as i told her i cant keep up with stuff at home. she has also mentioned she will come over and help around the house. i dont want to jinx it but am hoping she is true to her word.

distraction is nice, isnt it? im watching bachelor in paradise - dont judge me though lol! and having a chat online 🙂

i will have a look on your thread now luv

xxxx

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

its understable your feeling abit negative and all over the place though @Bella1978 "its a normal reaction to an abnormal situation"

did you need some more anxiety tips? ive got a few more that may help if you would like?

i understand the bond you have with your mum, i had the same with my nan. its like a one of a kind bond isnt it. very special. its ok to be scared. mental health is scary. loosing someone (even mentally) is scary.

they are some pretty noticeable changes, and while they are some signs of dimentia if her meds arent doing their jobs then it can make them worse. its not quite the same as your situation but i did have a med that felt like it sent me off the rails instead f helping me. it made me more anxious, more suicidal, more spacey and also i would chnage my moods at the flip of a coin.

hmm it must be abit hard to having to deny your friends, maybe you could invite one over at a time but let them know about whats happening atm and might have to be a shorter visit. its your home too so try to do some things for yourself as well.

im really glad you still have your uncle, and your sister is helping- i hope she keeps to her word too. could you see about getting a house cleaner in for you even once a week at all?

that is good about your psych as well, its good to be able to talk openly with offline without worrying about anonymitiy sometimes isnt it and having more practicle supports

nope not judging you, i was watching married at first sight when it was on, not a fan of that tv show though. i was watching the big bang theory then the voice and now lip sync battle.
