Seeking mutual support from carers

Seeking mutual support from carers

Reaching out to others who are in a caring role. I look after my mother with multiple health issues, including depression and anxiety. I feel stuck. I can see the signs that the depression has reared its head but my mum doesn't see it. I really struggle when my mum's mental health suffers. I too battle with depression and anxiety. Emotionally, I am all over the place. Hoping there are some others out there who understand what I'm going through.

Hey @Bella1978
I can help answer the questions you have but have been out all day and am quite tired and it will take a little thought to answering them in lay persons terms ... will check in tomorrow and if you still need clarification I will be more than happy to oblige.

Hi @Bella1978,

You asked in reference to your mum's psychiatrist "but in terms of hospitalising her he wont do that. she isn't a harm to herself or others. is this how the mental health system works though?".

I am by no means knowledgeable on this, from my own experience, what I understand is that one cannot be hospitalised against their will legally for mental health condition unless they are at risk of self harm or harm to someone else. I don't know the exact wording, but probably can look it up under Mental Health Act relevant for WA.

I know that one can be hospitalised as a voluntary patient only if the person is willing.

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

Thanks @merri!

Great to hear that you are taking time away from your usual routine, hope you have a restful and relaxing time.

Yeah.... I am learning to take it one day at a time. It's taken me a year or so to realise that I cannot keep running on empty. It's not easy to entrust the care of mum to others, especially when she protests, but once she settles a little, she actually doesn't mind it too much. I hope this will be the same when she goes in for respite care. It'll be for 6 weeks only and the staff are lovely. I also have friends who work there, so that all helps.

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

hi loveley

im not a carer for someone with MI but have this experience first hand from my hospitalisation. so from what i understand @Susana has hit the nail on the head with the voluntary stuff- she can get admitted if she checks into the ED or ambulance called.

however for the involuntary stuff- if shes not at risk to herself, or others then they dont often do involuntary admissions unless they can see she is really deteriorating (and often cant make decisions for herself)

he is right that they can be abit powerless when they dont want to help themselves and so they dont talk honestly about how they are feeling- which is what seems to have happened today. she put on the mask of im ok. she might be abit scared of hospital too so could be hesitant. im not sure how to get her to understand but opening up doesnt always mean hospital either- i had the same experience- i shut down and said nothing about how i was feeling due to that fear but often asking for help is often the first sign of wanting to get better as well.

if you think shes at risk of hurting herself then you can call an ambulance for further treatment. Carers Aust and other members here might have some other ideas too. but she is the only one who can admit herself voluntary and mh professionals often dont do involuntary admissions.

so atm its about just helping her the best you can and hoping she helps herself too.

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

@outlander

thanks sweets

she'd never check into ED herself but yeah, i have had to call the ambulance when she has been in a catatonic state, and there she has been transferred to mental health clinic,. its interesting though as last time she didnt want to go to mental health clinic but we managed to get her there (that was when she went to ED in catatanic state and then went to mental health clinic). hmmm

and yes, mum shuts down. i can understand that she would be scared of hospital cause she doesnt like it, and thats fair enough, as we want to be at home in our own environment. i know i get too worked up about it, i get scared, frustrated, impatient and upset. and i guess it is natural for me to feel all of those emotions seeing her the way she is. but i do need to respect her decision. i have to take a step back.

thanks for your advice luv. i was thinking i should probably go see my counsellor this week and chat to him too. *sigh* ... never a friggen dull moment hey????

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

she wasnt in the right state of mnd then either @Bella1978 so really the drs had more say then her and wouldve been made involuntary had she of not agrreed to it considering the state she was in. if that happens again don hesistate to call for help ok

@outlander

thank you sweetheart. yeah, she was at public hospital for a few days and then got transferred but didnt want to go. but i guess as she was admitted for the catatonia and was for mental health reasons it was more straightforward to transfer her.

and yes, i will support myself too.

seriously, you are one of the most generous and giving people i have ever met. and im not just saying that, you really are a beautiful person outlander.
