Seeking mutual support from carers

Seeking mutual support from carers

Reaching out to others who are in a caring role. I look after my mother with multiple health issues, including depression and anxiety. I feel stuck. I can see the signs that the depression has reared its head but my mum doesn't see it. I really struggle when my mum's mental health suffers. I too battle with depression and anxiety. Emotionally, I am all over the place. Hoping there are some others out there who understand what I'm going through.

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

Hi @Bella1978,

Hope today goes ok for your mum and for you. It's not easy in the midst of uncertainty regarding causes of physical symptoms for your mum. I pray that they will get to the bottom of it and set her on the path of feeling better soon.

Sorry to hear of your accident @outlander, take it easy there if you can.

Thanks everyone for checking in, @merri and @Bella1978, mum got discharged yesterday from hospital.... Now she's staying with cousin for a week and a bit before going into respite for 6 weeks....I am still adjusting to end of daylight saving here in NSW.... Body clock not quite there with the new timing yet. Balancing being ther caregiver and caring for self is not always easy. Thank you all for your encouragements!

Yes @merri, I have the help of a cousellor with Carers NSW as well as a psychologist under the mental health care plan with medicare. It's good we can access the resources in Australia.

Feeling thankful.

Take care everyone!

@outlander @Susana @Shaz51
I'm exhausted. Finally got mum home. They wouldn't let her stay at mental health clinic as she had been discharged by her psych. Ambo was called and they took her to ED at public hospital. They did blood test - everything fine. I also spoke to her psych and he said from a psychiatric viewpoint she is fine. Oh, i dont know. She has been pretty quiet, sometimes she will appear herself and other times she is distant and has a low mood. I guess i just have to wait and see.
I think she feels i have been pushing her lately, ie trying to get her to medical appts. She feels like she is losing control perhaps? Im trying to do the best for her. I have the doc telling me he wants to see mum and i have mum on the other end saying no. How do you all deal with those situations? @Faith-and-Hope @Catcakes @merri.
Do I pull back? It's hard cause up until now things have been going ok and she has trusted me. I feel she has maybe lost some of that trust with me.
X

Re: Seeking mutual support from carers

Oh boy @Bella1978,

It sounds like you have been through the wringer today. It's so hard to know what to do or what to let go of when when it comes to the wellbeing of our loved ones....No easy answer.

I find myself often feeling anxious and helpless when trying to decide on the best course of action in my mum's case if I was the only one with her at the time, I am at the stage where I just have to respect her wishes to decide for herself (if she is in the right frame of mind and not in danger of self hatm) and have to let her take ownership of that decision if she refuses medical attention. We often revisit it in a day or two and see if she has decided otherwise. That way, she gets more of a sense of control and I feel a bit of liberation knowing that I have already done our bit to give her an informed choice.

I am not sure if that's helpful at all in your situation at the moment, but I guess in my mum's case, I just need to choose my battles otherwise I would wear myself out constantly then I would be of no use to anyone.

Hope you can take a breather and give yourself a pat on the back for getting your mum all the medical attention that she needed today to rule out anything immediately pressing.

Well done! Hope tomorrow is a better day.

Hugs!
