@Snowie ..... different circumstances entirely, but want to share this with you in the hope it will help you to bear up .....

I know your mother is upset, but she has absolutely no right to take it out on you. She needs to adult-up about managing her own emotions. Nobody is perfect, but I am guessing it's a pattern for her that she is not taking responsibility for.

I have to go as "no contact" as possible with my s2bX, but we have adult kids, one of them a "forever baby" so it can't be no contact as much as I want it to be so ..... low contact is all I can hope for in the foreseeable future ..... and we have a grand baby on the way.

The thing is, there will be deaths in the family progressively, and life-changing events, and I will be in a similar position of not being able to reach out without increasing the contact with s2bX in the process, and that is really bad for me ......

I would have suggested as @outlander did, that you send flowers, a card, or both, to the friend's family - go around your brother.

It's tough, but work out ways you can go around, and in your mind's eye hand your mother's bad tempered carry-on back to her, and say, "No thank you, I don't need this in my life right now !"
