Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

This thread is a follow on (or starting over) from my previous thread Caring for a wife with borderline personality disorder – sequel to diary of wife's hospital stay, I wanted to start over and in order to leave all the trauma and negativity of last year behind me and start fresh.

Those of you who have been following our family journey will know that after a number of hospital admissions for my darling I was encouraged by my councillor to implement some boundaries (lovingly implemented guidelines, not rules to be enforced) as well as self-care for myself as what we were doing was clearly not working and my health was /still is being affected.

Well after a smoother than expected start the boundaries and self-care were forgotten with my darling having a complete melt down and further lengthy hospital admissions due to high risk of self harm and a genuine attempt to leave us. The last 6 months particularly have been quite difficult for us all. S2 particularly had a lot of issues at school during this time and is currently seeing a councillor.

The purpose of this new thread is to again document our journey of healing, working on implemented boundaries and commitment to self care. As with the previous thread this is so that I can have a visual plan for myself with some accountability to follow through with plans in place and in the hope that it may help others in similar situations to ours. And so that I can track our progress. This was especially helpful in the last thread leading up to Christmas when I was feeling down about our current position to review what I had written and see just how far we have come.

Hello @Determined

I have tried reading back several pages along with recalling what I remember about your situation...

Congratulations on the sale of your house and the next chapter....this part I am not sure about...

Your darling's many questions and anxiety I can relate to...

Your coping techniques....understanding ...venting I also can relate to as I see and hear this in my husband....

At the same time I put into place my own coping strategies for the person whom I am regarded as carer for...

A system of Pay It Forward...

The ladies at the real estate business are helpful and respectful.....this is great...

at the same time I find myself thinking ....that is part of their role....regardless of the person they are dealing with...They are treating your wife with respect that she deserves .....as we all want our loved ones suffering with any mind struggle to be treated...no differently...

You are still being a wonderful support for your family....despite the wear and tear that you are now experiencing....I am so pleased to read that you had some time out again with a friend ....enjoyed the time.....

Our lives seem to be running on a parallel at the moment @Determined..We have finally sold our house ....the second contract...cash buyer....we are waiting on tender hooks for tuesday midnight to come and go....then it will be official...so when you and I awaken on wednesday morning..(not together laugh) reality will set in....our property has been on the market for over two years...

our settlement date is in 3 weeks....September 21st...

some boxes are in the hallway along with bubblewrap...my request....they are still there...

wednesday I shall start...

I have another health issue also....am having to go through some unpleasant preparation and change in diet over the next few days...then test performed under anaesthetic ...day surgery...am hoping to get results on the day....

This is another specialist that I have been referred to by my gynaecologist....both are very good...welcome my zillion questions ...showing me diagrams and going into great detail for my benefit....all very reassuring for me....over the top in the eyes of my husband....so there is another parallel laugh..

The hardest part of this is being told that the test is to eliminate tumours...cancer...obstruction....

So every time my mind wanders over to the C word....I say yes that does happen but not with every single person..then move on...

Your having abdomen issues....then news of further investigation would probably have hit you like a thunderbolt....

for heaven sake....what now? what else? ...I get that and hope that you are not expecting too much from yourself...not burying your feelings...allowing them to just be there somewhere....getting you through to the next stage...

we found ourselves in a situation where we suddenly have to find a rental property for when we get the official seal....sold...

This in itself was quite horrendous as some of the properties looked so unclean....

Then husband suddenly exclaimed why had he not thought of this before...rang friend from 2 sporting clubs he is involved in...yes has rental properties available....we looked at outside of one which will pass...other 2 did not go past the fence...

so that is taken care of also...

packing husband has shared news with daughter...who has organised a weeks long service leave....same daughter who has struggled with me being on board in his life....I have made every effort to encourage her to spend time on her own with her dad ...I see this as an opportunity to help her with her grief about the loss of her mum....packing up the family home alongside dad...dad(as in my husband)passed this message on from me....So I believe that patience and stepping back has brought about some valuable change with all of his family...children..spouses...brothers..sister...a long time coming...none of them aware of my issues...

I am actually proud of myself for where I am at the moment....even though my brain is fragmented....I think it needs to be to help me...

Myhusband (darling) has said all along don't you worry about a thing....my concern finding a rental property...his laid back response ...wont be a problem ...I will find something and he did...

He is my tower of strength at the moment...as I am sure you are for your darling even if she can't quite put that into words..

In that very long winded way and I hope not upsetting you ....I am trying to tell you that we are both as well as our darlings dealing with everything that is being thrown at us....yes we all are tired...stretched to the limit...reacting in our own unique ways.....

we shall have moments ahead of sheer bliss that it has finally happened and our new journey is beginning...

stay safe and keep on believing in you

Sophia

Hi @Determined

Quick wave - trust things go relatively smoothly this week both with the move and your hospital visit.

Thanks @Former-Member

It is going to be a long week I think.

Patience and energy are currently at zero.

Re: Supporting my wife who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder while maintaining self care.

@Determined, you mentioned the church lunch being very tiring. Am wondering if a contributor to that is the need to be watchful? I imagine you'd be doing what I do when I know our Older Daughter is finding a crowd difficult- always half watching how she's coping, while at the same time trying to be sociable and actually have a "normal" conversation with someone.
Is a big week coming up for you, hope that somewhere in the middle of it you can keep an eye on yourself too.

@Smc

Possibly a little of that and watching the children are behaving but also when I am tired and run down I feel claustrophobic around crouds and really struggle with background noise. Hard to have a conversation with anyone when I find it hard to hear. A lot of little things combined.

Feeling down also tonight because our boys have been so excited about Farthers day today and I have been stressed and intolerant 😕

I want to try and do something special with them in a couple of weeks when everything settles down.

I dont know why but that has just overwhelmed me.
