soul’s year of recovery

soul’s year of recovery

Hi - many of you on the forums know me. Thought it might be time to start a new thread.

2017 was an especially awful year for me. I escaped an extremely violent and abusive relationship fleeing the country where I was living and returning to Australia. My mother passed away and I was ostracised from my family. And lastly, just when I thought I was getting my act together and was on holiday, I sustained an injury from an accident which has left me somewhat incapacitated.

I have found a lot of support here and will continue to lean on those who I have come to know as friends. So come along with me as I try to make this year an improvement on last @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Former-Member @utopia @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Determined @outlander @CheerBear @Maggie @TAB @Sans911 @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Bimby2 @Appleblossom and anyone else who has followed my story.

When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, I made a few resolutions and goals in various areas of my life for the coming year. One thing I wanted to do was to regain was my physical fitness. I had been feeling so strong and well before my accident. I had been walking/jogging for at least 10kms each day and going to yoga sessions seven times a week. After my shattered shoulder and nerve damage through my arm, Yoga is out and I was fortunately able to put my membership on hold. I started walking again this past week and can manage 2kms. My arm is still in a sling and feels as heavy as lead and I can’t manage walking the dog yet. I am trying to be as independent as I can be and have seen progress. At least I can shower myself now. I miss being able to do the things I used to - like driving and even hanging out the washing.

Today was my Mum’s birthday so that was really hard. The kids and I went to the park where her ashes were scattered - the rose bush sporting a single feeble looking bloom. Afterwards, we had lunch together so that was nice.

I’ve had a break from medical stuff over the Christmas New Year period but the appointments start back tomorrow with an EMG where they will put electrodes on me and give me electric shocks to assess the nerve damage. Not really my idea of fun.

Anyway - onwards and upwards. That’s the plan in any case.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

😞 @Former-Member, feel for you, and know the feeling.

Hello @Faith-and-Hope xox

I cant say here where I'm living in Sydney @soul but its leafy & hilly. It is my childhood home. Sounds like you had a good relationship with your mum. I grieved the loss pf a loving mum all my life. What i give her & dad & even my siblings - i give because it is the right thing to do, and because I care, and God is watching. It ia a statement of who i am. Whether i grieve later for mum, when i go back to living alone perhaps, then i may reflect on what i miss about my mum. Even the conflict between my siblings & i at the moment has been grossly fuelled by 2 things mum said in her WILL - 3days before she died. Causing trouble from the grave i guess. None the less i am still gere to help dad (even though she was always jealous of my connection with dad) & I'll be here 'till he doesnt need me any more or i cant do it anymore. I have a lovely display for mum centre stage in the loungeroom. Her beautiful wedding photo, above her ashes, a flask & flowers & candles & an angle. She loved angels. She had a soft playful side my mum, that is how i will remember her. I lit her andle today, while here on my own - but still felt nothing, though i do have a little tear typing this.

Its awful that ppl closest to us lie & backstab... and that you didnt get the chance to explain to your mum & set things right before she died. My mother put me as next of kin when she was admitted to hospital the last time, i did all the paperwork and carted dad in every day. She set me up to help dad with his banking and being his carer... But after my sister visited mum (only twice in mums last two weeks mind you), mum changed toward me after that, and mums WILL does not reflect what was the preceeding weeks. I was hurt at first but now just puzzled. Mums last words to me were not kind. Thw visit i had with mum alone Bro2 verbally abused me when i challenged him & hospital policy, at the nurses station, for having me removed from the contact list for mum. I've done nothing wrong, all im doing is staying with dad to help him because he can't cook & clean & even clean himself properly - he can barely walk or remember to use his vitalcall medialarm (re STMemoryLoss... I cant believe my sibs think he should be here alone as long as they left him when mum in hospital ladt time)

"Looking after myself? " weeeell lol Needs work - forgot my pills today, again, & havent showered yet. Tend to always put others first. BUT but made my room more comfortable today. x3 bags of declutter for charity mostly - so much unused linen and big dolls no body in the family want.

What do you mean "feel part of the community more.?

I dont me ss my old house, but do miss the quiet country atmosphere & birds... It is 12OOkm away with a house sitter.

too long to type 😞 broke my glasses grr

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Thanks for your reply @Former-Member. Wasn't sure whether you want to take the conversation elsewhere but whatever is okay.

My Mum was always the kind who didn't want to make waves. She was caring and loving in her own way but found it difficult to express it. Likewise we never had "deep" conversations. I never wanted to trouble her with my woes and basically all she would ask is a simple "How are you?" to which I would answer "Fine" and we left it at that. She never knew what happened to me over the years and maybe that's for the best.

I, too, know what it is like to be outcast and betrayed. My siblings spread many lies about me including implying I had misappropriated money from her accounts and when I proved myself, no apology was forthcoming. I was told that her account passwords had been changed, told to hand over her house keys, I was not to visit unless it was approved by them and the list goes on. Some of the lies were absolutely shocking.

I had taken care of Dad and Mum for many years. Using up family leave, long service leave, going part time at work and then quitting my job but their excuse was that I wasn't allowing them to assist. the fact was that they were selfish and unreliable and it was the last thing my parents needed. My sister's response was that doing too much for them would make them too dependent. What the??? She was perfectly fine with her taking a taxi to her chemo and radiotherapy sessions even though they left her absolutely deleted. Well, I wasn't going to let that happen so I assured Mum that I would be there for her.

I don't expect to ever have anything to do with them. To my knowledge her house stands vacant, unsold - has been for eighteeen months. When they decided she would go to an aged care facility, they quickly stripped it of everything.

"Being part of the comunity" - I wondered if you were familiar with the locality. Knowing about the services, how to get around, perhaps even the neighbours or some friends.

I can't really talk. I just wave or have a brief convo with my neighbours. Of course the accident has made me a bit of a recluse, only venturing out for medical appointments. Hope to change that soon.

When I get my car, I'll make it a goal to reconnect. Sort of reluctant to explain my absence. maybe I can just say I was abducted by aliens and they wiped my memory of that time. If only. I guess I'll just be brief and focus the talk on them which is more than likely a more pleasant topic anyway.

Take care @Former-Member. You are often in my thoughts.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Yeah lol Replies can be far & few between.

Sounds like you've survived terrible carryon. Its not so much what's done, but its the how & who does it - thats what hurts.

I default to thinking its always my fault, that i deserve to be punk shed, reinforsing the deep belief that i'm unclean / shunned! But slowly learning that most people's interpretations & behaviour choices are more about them than me.

They say we need teach ppl how to treat us. eg i refuse to give my drug using gambling brothers any money, no matter how small - this week Bro4 has become angry & disrespectful toward me, sending horrible tx msgs... and staying away, and blaming me... all because i refused to 'lend' him $5. Drawing boundaries & staying consistent is exhausting with these ppl. Another boundry is my privacy - my bedroom key went missing from my keyring this last week. Took care of that again yesterday - somewhat expensive mind you - now i carry my keys ON ME all the time, even to bed. Of cause they pull out every trick in the book, even say 'you're paranoid' or 'forgetful'... as if i'd remove my own key off the keyring grr

BooHoo, i dont wanna cook tea tonight, dont feel well, not fair!

"soul" - i'm so proud of your progress, your persistence / hanging in there... So glad they expect a full recovery. WTG! 🙂

Life doesn't mosey along in one straight line. It's filled with ups and down and a lot of bends as well.

Since I last checked in, I have continued attending appointments for physiotherapy both in and out of water and occupational therapy. The latter told me that my hand grip strength was good enough for me to drive - a score of ten which is apparently the minimum they recommend. By comparison my left hand rated 25.

In any case, my car was delivered and nervously (hadn't driven in four months) I took my first trip ... to the doctor.

I had been having problems with balance and also extensive bloating and weight gain issues since starting nerve pain medication a couple of months ago. At first I was massively zonked out but I did get kind of used to that, taking the capsule earlier in the evening. Then during the past several days, I began to feel really unsteady and also had blurred vision along with increased bloating ( felt hungry but after eating just a small amount my belly in particular would swell up uncomfortably)

So off to the GP who told me to stop taking it. She prescribed some other broad spectrum pain meds but I am trying to keep them to a minimum. Now my metabolism is attempting to reset and I have been alternating between struggling to keep my eyes open and feeling crazily alert. More pain in my hand but it's preferable to the other side effects.

Hopefully, things will sort themselves out. I don't feel confident driving around at the moment - perhaps in a week or two.

I did have lunch with a friend last week and went out with my daughter over the weekend. I also have a hair appointment booked for next weekend and then a get together with three other friends who I have not seen for at least six months.

So, I am putting an effort into being more sociable and as the weather cools, I hope to get out of the city (in my new car) and enjoy the natural environment. Have been loving some of the photos put up on the Forum especially from @Bubbles3 this weekend.

Would also be nice to have someone to share these walks with. I may try to seek out some common interest groups for that purpose.

I spoke to my older brother for an hour on the phone today. We both talked about our respective health problems, our kids etc. Hope to visit him when the weather turns milder.

Sorry that I have been a bit out of touch with the goings on in everyone's lives. I turn off notifications now and then as it can become a bit much but feel free to tag me to your own thread. I do care and I am interested.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Hi again @soul sounds like you're on top of things and in for the journey. I'm just muddling along here, chasing my in action with self doubt. Anyway. A few short term gains and having to get thinking cap on here re life. Not getting on top of things is not my friend atm.
Have a work medical tomorrow for short term work, dreading it as can't get ontop of weight issues, think grip thing there is closer to 50 maybe it's different measurements. Hoping no cardio test but suspect there will be. Was scraping through medicals even 6mths ago then weight went up not down like it was supposed to der lol. Sorry for moaning. Walking and seeing people sounds good. And same re notifications
