soul’s year of recovery

soul’s year of recovery

Hi - many of you on the forums know me. Thought it might be time to start a new thread.

2017 was an especially awful year for me. I escaped an extremely violent and abusive relationship fleeing the country where I was living and returning to Australia. My mother passed away and I was ostracised from my family. And lastly, just when I thought I was getting my act together and was on holiday, I sustained an injury from an accident which has left me somewhat incapacitated.

I have found a lot of support here and will continue to lean on those who I have come to know as friends. So come along with me as I try to make this year an improvement on last @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Former-Member @utopia @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Determined @outlander @CheerBear @Maggie @TAB @Sans911 @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Bimby2 @Appleblossom and anyone else who has followed my story.

When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, I made a few resolutions and goals in various areas of my life for the coming year. One thing I wanted to do was to regain was my physical fitness. I had been feeling so strong and well before my accident. I had been walking/jogging for at least 10kms each day and going to yoga sessions seven times a week. After my shattered shoulder and nerve damage through my arm, Yoga is out and I was fortunately able to put my membership on hold. I started walking again this past week and can manage 2kms. My arm is still in a sling and feels as heavy as lead and I can’t manage walking the dog yet. I am trying to be as independent as I can be and have seen progress. At least I can shower myself now. I miss being able to do the things I used to - like driving and even hanging out the washing.

Today was my Mum’s birthday so that was really hard. The kids and I went to the park where her ashes were scattered - the rose bush sporting a single feeble looking bloom. Afterwards, we had lunch together so that was nice.

I’ve had a break from medical stuff over the Christmas New Year period but the appointments start back tomorrow with an EMG where they will put electrodes on me and give me electric shocks to assess the nerve damage. Not really my idea of fun.

Anyway - onwards and upwards. That’s the plan in any case.

Hi Soul,

Nice to catch up, we've both had lots going on in real life. I've caught bits of where ya at along the way, let me summarise the latest... You have been:

- working really hard on rehab √

- given the all clear to drive again √√

- bought a new car √ (getting one for myself which will be delivered next week (ordered ocer the phone, and selicered, wow!) Excited to be mobile again.

- hand is still stiff & painful - another three months for good function, perhaps another year √

- It's nice not being so dependent. √√
- live alone now with dog, bit lonely but gas its benefits √ (so know what you mean 🙂 - going out more helps √
- learnt to 'put up' with aches & pains √
- enjoying art galleries √
- back walking the dog far distances √
- the car will allow more freedom √
- no more forced public transport √

My life is full on on a different level, moved toSydney to help mum & dad), mum died a month ago, I'm too flat out with all dad's stuff, being his carer, & pesky dysfunctional family issues - to grieve. Feeling old / tired...

Otherwise fine - thanks lol

Just do the best we can,

that's all we can do

Hugzz 🌷💜

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Hey @Former-Member - where you are living in Sydney - is that your childhood home by any chance?

Too busy to grieve sounds sad in itself. I have a photo of my Mum and myself and my daughter (that my daughter sorted out for my birthday complete with frame) that I have on my dressing table. That way I can say goodnight and good morning to her and remember her as she was in better times. Of course there are still so many tearful moments (Including regrets and knowing my siblings told her lies that I didn't get the chance to explain to her) but I can see her smiling face and that gives me some peace.

I hope you are looking after yourself as well as your Dad. Also hope you will be able to feel part of the community (hence my previous question).

Do you miss your place? I gather it was quite a distance away and a bit rural.

Doing the best we can - I like that. Take care, my friend.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

I kept myself very busy for the year or so after my Mum passed @soul @Former-Member ..... and it wasn’t to be to busy to grieve ..... it was more than I was measuring my grief ....filling my time so full and running so hard meant it took time for grief to catch up with me ..... by then it was deluting by degrees and I could manage it better. Staying busy was my main coping strategy.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

When I read about people having mothers who care about them and support them I wonder what that would be like. It's like reading a fairytale.

I grieve for the mother I never had, I also grieve for the mother I did have, the one who laid the blame for all the family's ill fortune at my feet. The daemons she must have had in her own mind to cause her to treat me the way she did. She did not do the same to the others, older and younger than I.

I have no idea whether she is still living or not. Father left this world some years ago and I got to say what I needed to say to him, but did not hear what I needed to hear from him.

How fortunate are those who have/ had loving, caring mothers and/ or fathers @Faith-and-Hope @soul @Former-Member

The sadness I feel at the loss of familial connection is balanced out by the relief of no longer having to deal with all their judgemental aggravation.

It's pleasing to have all gained so much out of the turbulence that is life.
