soul’s year of recovery

soul’s year of recovery

Hi - many of you on the forums know me. Thought it might be time to start a new thread.

2017 was an especially awful year for me. I escaped an extremely violent and abusive relationship fleeing the country where I was living and returning to Australia. My mother passed away and I was ostracised from my family. And lastly, just when I thought I was getting my act together and was on holiday, I sustained an injury from an accident which has left me somewhat incapacitated.

I have found a lot of support here and will continue to lean on those who I have come to know as friends. So come along with me as I try to make this year an improvement on last @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Former-Member @utopia @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Determined @outlander @CheerBear @Maggie @TAB @Sans911 @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Bimby2 @Appleblossom and anyone else who has followed my story.

When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, I made a few resolutions and goals in various areas of my life for the coming year. One thing I wanted to do was to regain was my physical fitness. I had been feeling so strong and well before my accident. I had been walking/jogging for at least 10kms each day and going to yoga sessions seven times a week. After my shattered shoulder and nerve damage through my arm, Yoga is out and I was fortunately able to put my membership on hold. I started walking again this past week and can manage 2kms. My arm is still in a sling and feels as heavy as lead and I can’t manage walking the dog yet. I am trying to be as independent as I can be and have seen progress. At least I can shower myself now. I miss being able to do the things I used to - like driving and even hanging out the washing.

Today was my Mum’s birthday so that was really hard. The kids and I went to the park where her ashes were scattered - the rose bush sporting a single feeble looking bloom. Afterwards, we had lunch together so that was nice.

I’ve had a break from medical stuff over the Christmas New Year period but the appointments start back tomorrow with an EMG where they will put electrodes on me and give me electric shocks to assess the nerve damage. Not really my idea of fun.

Anyway - onwards and upwards. That’s the plan in any case.

So another week has passed and I am plodding along. I have managed a couple of trips in my new car - even one through city traffic. Although I have been driving since I was seventeen, my accident has left me a bit shaken and I was extra cautious. Getting familiar with different car configurations is also an issue. I'm supposed to take it in for a service at the end of the month but i can't see myself having clocked up the 1000 kms by then.

I went to the hairdressers yesterday. I don't usually spend a lot of money on those services (probably more on the dog grooming actually) but I departed feeling pretty good. Have just the one physio session this week. I continue to work hard at my exercises and see small improvements.

My kids came over for lunch today and my son helped me with the garden - purchasing and speading mulch. I would like to grow some herbs so that could be a project. Plants don't tend to survive very long under my care. I missed out when green thumbs were being handed out.

I am having lunch with some friends on Friday and feel a bit apprehensive about that. It's depressing when they talk about their happy lives - close knit families, what they have been up to, what home improvements they have done, where they have been or are going to. Guess, I'll just have to let it wash over me. That used to be my life.

I also want to try to join up some common interestt groups but am not sure where to start. Hopefully they aren't a really tight group who don't welcome strangers. Now that I am fairly mobile again, I should be able to access these kind of things - it's just the confidence thing.

There are a few friends I could contact that I haven't seen for a while - that could be an option too. Again - a bit scary.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Baby steps @soul ..... public library or community centre might have interest groups advertised ..... seeking them out is Step 1.

Placing a note by the phone to ring a friend is another Step 1 ......

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Wow @soul - its wonderful you're even thinking of stepping out, to mix more...
to rebuild a life worth living 🙂

Common interest groups are better than just sitting and talking. As you indicated so well - unfocused conversation can be so boring, and like you i find it confronting & difficult to join in. By the way, move to the next table or visit the powdwr room when that happens. Or interject with a great story of your own - like your best day in Tialand. But it takes confidence / a level of self esteem. Youre working on both those - well done!

Common Intwreat groups can also be found promoted on
- community notice boards
- local newspapers
- local council websites
- google search engines
- church halls
- word of mouth

Let us know what you find & how it goes. Be brave

Morning @soul ☺ Really enjoy hearing of your progress and plodding along.

I don't seem to get tags in this thread even though I noticed they're green and hyperlinky looking (so they probably should tag). Just thought I'd mention it as I wonder if the same happens for others here also and therefore they may miss your updates.

Go you soul. Your steps are all adding up!

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Hey there @soul - I'm with @CheerBear and not getting a tag for the thread either. I stopped by because a 'kudos from' came up in my feed, but I've gone back and checked and no 'mentioned you' is there.

I'm so pleased for you that things are moving along so nicely, given all the other stuff. Little steps, which you are doing, or planning on doing, are the best ways to find a new sense of belonging for yourself. When life changes is such dramatic ways, it's really hard to be amongst those superficial conversations and still feel any sense of connection. It is for me anyway.

The joining an interest group has not worked for me, the cliques in this place are functioning very strongly, and it's really uncomfortable for me when I don't/ won't join in with their sharing of family photos and gossip mongering. Different towns are differently welcoming though, and I do really hope it works for you.

Town Council often has a list of interest groups in the town/ region, their website might be a starting place. Libraries often have sessions on varying subjects too. Information centres are another good source of interest group information, and sometimes they need volunteers if that's of interest to you too.

Driving again will be both exciting and scary, so many more paths opening up for you! So nice to hear some good news @soul.

Keep looking after you, you're an inspiration in how diligent you are with the self care to get on top of things again.

@Shaz51

This afternoon I went to a hands on session with the physio. Last time I had one of these, it really was painful as my shoulder joint is very stiff and needs manipulation. That night, I woke up with an anxiety attack freaking out about being physically hurt.

As a result, I was somewhat apprehensive about today's visit. I think it went fairly well. The therapist and I chatted about football and the actual massage and treatment wasn't quite as vigorous. Hopefully, things will be okay tonight.

Another thing that unnerved me today was that I received an email from my younger brother (group email to all the siblings) informing us that his father-in-law had passed away and that there would be a service. Some of you may recall that this brother and my sister took it upon themselves to scatter my mother's ashes without my input and that there was no funeral or otherwise for her.

Now he didn't imply that any of us are invited to this service as such. In fact the whole email was very impersonal as is his manner.

Not wanting to be rude, I messaged my sister-in-law who has always been pleasant enough (hadn't seen or heard from her since before Mum had passed away - she did speak to me briefly at the hospital unlike the sibs) offering my condolences.

She replied and thanked me and hoped that I had recovered from my accident. The only way she would have know about my mishap would have been through my older brother who is on speaking terms ( kind of) with everyone although this hasn't always been the case.

So it's likely the siblings all knew but no one offered any help. Really sucks but that's what I have been dealt with. I dare say that if I hadn't survived they wouldn't have cared less.
