soul’s year of recovery

soul’s year of recovery

Hi - many of you on the forums know me. Thought it might be time to start a new thread.

2017 was an especially awful year for me. I escaped an extremely violent and abusive relationship fleeing the country where I was living and returning to Australia. My mother passed away and I was ostracised from my family. And lastly, just when I thought I was getting my act together and was on holiday, I sustained an injury from an accident which has left me somewhat incapacitated.

I have found a lot of support here and will continue to lean on those who I have come to know as friends. So come along with me as I try to make this year an improvement on last @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Former-Member @utopia @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Determined @outlander @CheerBear @Maggie @TAB @Sans911 @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Bimby2 @Appleblossom and anyone else who has followed my story.

When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, I made a few resolutions and goals in various areas of my life for the coming year. One thing I wanted to do was to regain was my physical fitness. I had been feeling so strong and well before my accident. I had been walking/jogging for at least 10kms each day and going to yoga sessions seven times a week. After my shattered shoulder and nerve damage through my arm, Yoga is out and I was fortunately able to put my membership on hold. I started walking again this past week and can manage 2kms. My arm is still in a sling and feels as heavy as lead and I can’t manage walking the dog yet. I am trying to be as independent as I can be and have seen progress. At least I can shower myself now. I miss being able to do the things I used to - like driving and even hanging out the washing.

Today was my Mum’s birthday so that was really hard. The kids and I went to the park where her ashes were scattered - the rose bush sporting a single feeble looking bloom. Afterwards, we had lunch together so that was nice.

I’ve had a break from medical stuff over the Christmas New Year period but the appointments start back tomorrow with an EMG where they will put electrodes on me and give me electric shocks to assess the nerve damage. Not really my idea of fun.

Anyway - onwards and upwards. That’s the plan in any case.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Just realised that it's been more than a couple of weeks since I updated my recovery thread. Not that much to report except that I have been working really hard on my rehab and after a consultation with the orthopaedic doctor yesterday, I have been given the all clear to drive again.

Since I gave my last car to my daughter and she has moved away, I have bought a new one for myself which will be delivered next week. Fortunately, i was able to sort out the transaction all over the phone and via email as I loathe caryards. This afternoon, the carsaleswoman came out and I signed the contract. I knew exactly what I wanted so it was just a matter of getting a good price.

I'm very excited to be mobile again. Not having driven for more than four months, I'll start off with local trips. My hand is still very stiff and becomes painful but there is enough range of motion in my arm to turn the wheel. No doubt the first few times will leave me feeling tired. Still can't do some things that I used to.

The doc reckons another three months for good function and perhaps another year until I reach my potential again. It's nice not being so dependent.

I'm living alone now with just the dog. It gets lonely at times but is nice in some ways too. I can walk around wearing whatever I want, can eat when I want, listen to whatever music I want.

I have been making an effort to go out a bit more especially now that I have more energy. My arm still feels heavy but I have learnt to put up with the aches and pains. I have been enjoying art galleries and am back walking the dog for longer distances.

The car will allow me a lot more freedom to venture further afield taking me more places than public transport has allowed.

@soulgood to hear you can drive again, just the independance alone must feel good.

Has been such a long journey for you with lots of ups and downs. I can see that all that hard work you have been putting into your recovery is paying of.

Hi @soul Thanks for updating us on how things are going for you.

A new car, excellent! I hope that does give you more options, & a sense of greater independence.

I would not be able to go to work without my car - it's too far away.

Lots of wows and well done to you @soul. You have been through so much with this. You really do show us how important it is to appreciate and recognise those 'maybe seem like small steps' forward 💗

Thanks for sharing.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Super news about being able to drive again and very exciting about having your own car again @soul.

I have had a couple of 24 hour driving bans after anesthetic or when begining new meds. Being unable to drive for 24 hours even was torture for me. I cant imagine not being able to drive myself for any length of time.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

That's great to hear @soul. A new car - & it sounds like it was super easy to organise.
Glad to hear your doctor say about 3 more months for a good improvement.
Well done on all the work you have put in to heal that shoulder. It's paying off.
