soul’s year of recovery

soul’s year of recovery

Hi - many of you on the forums know me. Thought it might be time to start a new thread.

2017 was an especially awful year for me. I escaped an extremely violent and abusive relationship fleeing the country where I was living and returning to Australia. My mother passed away and I was ostracised from my family. And lastly, just when I thought I was getting my act together and was on holiday, I sustained an injury from an accident which has left me somewhat incapacitated.

I have found a lot of support here and will continue to lean on those who I have come to know as friends. So come along with me as I try to make this year an improvement on last @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Former-Member @utopia @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Determined @outlander @CheerBear @Maggie @TAB @Sans911 @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Bimby2 @Appleblossom and anyone else who has followed my story.

When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, I made a few resolutions and goals in various areas of my life for the coming year. One thing I wanted to do was to regain was my physical fitness. I had been feeling so strong and well before my accident. I had been walking/jogging for at least 10kms each day and going to yoga sessions seven times a week. After my shattered shoulder and nerve damage through my arm, Yoga is out and I was fortunately able to put my membership on hold. I started walking again this past week and can manage 2kms. My arm is still in a sling and feels as heavy as lead and I can’t manage walking the dog yet. I am trying to be as independent as I can be and have seen progress. At least I can shower myself now. I miss being able to do the things I used to - like driving and even hanging out the washing.

Today was my Mum’s birthday so that was really hard. The kids and I went to the park where her ashes were scattered - the rose bush sporting a single feeble looking bloom. Afterwards, we had lunch together so that was nice.

I’ve had a break from medical stuff over the Christmas New Year period but the appointments start back tomorrow with an EMG where they will put electrodes on me and give me electric shocks to assess the nerve damage. Not really my idea of fun.

Anyway - onwards and upwards. That’s the plan in any case.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Hi everyone. Okay - here’s the progress report you’ve all been waiting for. Firstly - last Sunday was difficult for me as it was the first Mother’s Day without my Mum. My kids took me out to lunch and seeing women with their older Mums made me somewhat tearful. I held it together until after the kids had left, then let it all out.

Today also happens to be Dad’s birthday. Gone nine years now. So I have been feeling a bit sad lately.

Next - my physical health. I saw my physio today and he told me that I was almost there in terms of recovery. As far as range of motion goes, I am at 90% for most movements except for tricky ones like reaching up behind my back. I can however do up my bra with a bit of effort. Considering I was advised that it would take twelve months, I reckon all the hard work has paid off - the accident was six months ago. I still do my exercises twice daily and get new ones every time I have a physiotherapy session which is now every fortnight. I’m enjoying swimming and can walk further distances.

Now - for the part you’re all wondering about. Yes - I have been dating and I have met someone who I really enjoy the company of and can see a future with. It’s early days yet but I have a good feeling about this. Only took four tries. First guy I saw four times; second guy - once; third guy - twice. After my miserable marriage and my disastrous previous relationship, maybe it’s a case of third time lucky. I certainly hope so. He ticks all the boxes and we have really good communication. He’s easy to be with, intelligent, funny, kind and caring. And he’s good looking too! 😉

So for the first time in quite a while, I am feeling happy and quite optimistic about the future. At times, I think this will all evaporate or something bad will happen because that is what happened in the past. It seems too good to be true and I’m feeling so fortunate.

I just hope I don’t self sabotage it. He senses my uneasiness now and then and I am thinking that we’ll have to have that conversation about why I am that way. Part of me doesn’t want to tell him for fear he will be shocked and wonder why I stayed with a man who was like that - as if there was something wrong with me. To tell you the truth, if I had heard my story and wasn’t a part of it, I’d be thinking it was all a bit weird. All I’ve said thus far was that it didn’t end well and that the relationship was unhealthy.

I suppose we all have skeletons in our closets and I want this relationship to be one built on respect, understanding and honesty.

I have told my daughter and she seems happy enough although maybe somewhat reticent after my last relationship of which she knew a bit about. We even discussed internet dating and the pros and cons of it.

So there you have it. Ha ha @Former-Member - now you know. But of course, I’ll still be around. I get by with a little help from my friends.
