soul’s year of recovery

soul’s year of recovery

Hi - many of you on the forums know me. Thought it might be time to start a new thread.

2017 was an especially awful year for me. I escaped an extremely violent and abusive relationship fleeing the country where I was living and returning to Australia. My mother passed away and I was ostracised from my family. And lastly, just when I thought I was getting my act together and was on holiday, I sustained an injury from an accident which has left me somewhat incapacitated.

I have found a lot of support here and will continue to lean on those who I have come to know as friends. So come along with me as I try to make this year an improvement on last @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Former-Member @utopia @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Determined @outlander @CheerBear @Maggie @TAB @Sans911 @Former-Member @Former-Member @frog @Former-Member @Bimby2 @Appleblossom and anyone else who has followed my story.

When the clock struck 12 on New Year’s Eve, I made a few resolutions and goals in various areas of my life for the coming year. One thing I wanted to do was to regain was my physical fitness. I had been feeling so strong and well before my accident. I had been walking/jogging for at least 10kms each day and going to yoga sessions seven times a week. After my shattered shoulder and nerve damage through my arm, Yoga is out and I was fortunately able to put my membership on hold. I started walking again this past week and can manage 2kms. My arm is still in a sling and feels as heavy as lead and I can’t manage walking the dog yet. I am trying to be as independent as I can be and have seen progress. At least I can shower myself now. I miss being able to do the things I used to - like driving and even hanging out the washing.

Today was my Mum’s birthday so that was really hard. The kids and I went to the park where her ashes were scattered - the rose bush sporting a single feeble looking bloom. Afterwards, we had lunch together so that was nice.

I’ve had a break from medical stuff over the Christmas New Year period but the appointments start back tomorrow with an EMG where they will put electrodes on me and give me electric shocks to assess the nerve damage. Not really my idea of fun.

Anyway - onwards and upwards. That’s the plan in any case.

Re: soul’s year of recovery

Hi to all you good people on the Forum. Sorry to have alarmed you in any way with my hiatus. Your concerns and well wishes have not gone unnoticed.

I needed a break around Easter time. Having a disfunctional family was really making me depressed and I had to take a step back from 1) Hearing about people’s family Easter plans and 2) Everybody’s problems as I wasn’t in a fit state to help in any way and felt they may be triggering. I also withdrew from social media.

I ended up just having a lunch on the Easter Saturday with my kids. I have had no contact with the nasty sibs, just some emails with my older brother who I like.

My rehab has been coming along well and now I just visit the physio every fortnight. I swim twice a week and do a series of exercises each morning and evening as well as walking my dog. The pain is still there but it is tolerable. Progress is evident and hopefully Yoga even if it is modified, will be back on the agenda in a couple more months.

After being in the depths of a bit of despair, I dragged myself up again. I planned a couple of mini goals. One was to make my home a bit cosier so now and then I buy a couple of decorator items and it has certainly made a difference in making me feel more settled.

The other aim was to seek out some company of the male persuasion. I had finally worked up enough courage (a couple of glasses of wine helped) Well, this has had mixed results. I registered on an Internet Dating Site - not the swipe right or left one - and was inundated with meet requests and messages. I’m talking hundreds of them. A tiny part of me felt flattered by all the attention but 99% of me felt like a piece of meat. It really scared me off and I didn’t respond to anyone for a while. Then I started very slowly to message back a few guys who seemed okay.

I have been out on a couple of dates at public venues but nothing has developed as yet. Needing to pace myself and I am extra cautious about trusting anyone. Maybe one day.

Last weekend was the anniversary of my Dad’s passing so that was an emotional time for me. I set off early and took my first long road trip (an hour and a half) to the lookout from where his ashes had been scattered and spent some time reflecting. I also attached an engraved lock to the wire of the fence. I will look for it in a year’s time when I visit again. I took a long walk in a nearby national park and headed back in time for a late lunch with my kids.

Hopefully, now that I am a bit more with it, I can keep you posted and offer something back to this Forum which has been so helpful to me.

Many of you may have been struggling. I have skimmed over a few of the threads. I hope things become easier for all of us and happy times are in sight. You are all very special people and we are fortunate to have this support.
