@Former-Member Interesting. That must be very hard on you and your husband to be dealing with this diagnosis. Would a kidney transplant fix the problem and I know the waiting list is astronomical .

Thanks @Bunniekins. Hi @Shaz51. My husband is similar to Shaz, in that he only has one kidney. He had one removed because of cancer about 7 years ago. His kidney function is slowly reducing, but is not at a level yet which requires dialysis. Transplant would not be an option for him now, regardless of need, because of his Stage IV Melanoma diagnosis and the treatment he is undergoing. Unfortunately the treatment is likely to further deteriorate his kidney function. We will just have to wait and see. Its all a tricky business. He is also on a kidney friendly diet which helps take some of the pressure off his kidneys.
But for now, he drinks lots of water, which is very important to help his remaining kidney eliminate waste. Our bodies are naturally made up of a very large proportion of water, and we need to keep it well hydrated and replenished.

@Former-Member@Shaz51 It amazes me that my father did everything wrong ... he drank like a fish, never drank water and ate all the wrong foods and lived till 76 before he had a massive stroke due to diabetes. If he had done everything right he would still be here today.

@Shaz51@Former-Member@outlander@Ant7@Former-Member @Former-MemberThe other thing besides drinking loads of water I am eating heaps of vegetables with some being organic which I am snacking on with the kids. We are all chaning our diet. I am determined to make us all eat better with a pizza day for the kids once a week.

@Bubbles3, there are lots of reason why kidneys fail , everyone is different
with me I got an infection and the gp gave me the wrong AB`s which made mine worse , then I found out i was born with only one kidney -- found out when I was 43 and my kidney is working at 24 %
@Former-Member husband is different again xx
@Bubbles3, a simple blood test will tell you how well your kidneys are working ![]()

Water! yes I am also trying to drink more room temperature water. I drink a lot of beverages - coffee (which I am sure is a self-medicating thing to counteract some of the somnambulism of anti-psychotic meds) and decaf and tea. I am going low carb now as I have gotten portly from metabolism changes after hysto and the meds too. I read a recommendation to drink a glass of water before a meal to help the feel-full feeling. It seems to work.
I agree that the fads that say xx litres of water a day are not scientific, it is important to stay hydrated but it can also be dangerous to drink too much water (like litres and litres in one sitting) so like everything else us peeps who live with MI must remember that all things in... moderation, moderation, moderation!
Hope everyone is having a goodish new year so far. waves ~~~~
PS: about the taste I think it depends where you live, perhaps a water filter might help improve the taste? But! telling our brain it tastes 'fine' everytime will change the perception of the taste too.
