Flashbacks

Flashbacks

Hello,

The loop of starting to feel a little more alive and then another flashback kicks me in the gut, out of nowhere, takes my air out of my body and knocks me down.
All energy then is focussed on keeping me safe.
Then follows the numbness. The feeling not to be part of this world. And it lasts as long as it lasts and it leaves me in fear of the next flashback, the next time I lose control.
I don’t even know if they’re called flashbacks when you don’t get an intrusive thought but just a feeling and all your body does, and your brain, is react.

Re: Flashbacks

Thank you @Faith-and-Hope, thank you.

It helps to hear how others have learnt to accept baby steps and that there is a future.

I’m about to turn the light off, take my teddy and go asleep, but I’m scared of what I will see. My mind plays really bad tricks with me.

Have a lovely weekend!

Re: Flashbacks

I hope you sleep okay tonight @Former-Member.

There are others here who struggle all the time with flashbacks. You will find Zoe and Nell on Am Not Coping thread of you want to chat with people who understand without you having to say anything much at all ......

Re: Flashbacks

Hi @Faith-and-Hope

How are you? I’m struggling with meds changes and little sleep and lots of dreams. Just tired but hanging in there.

Re: Flashbacks

Hi @Former-Member ...... I am tired too, but for a different reason.

My hubby eats in bed at night, and it's not something I can sit with, so I park up in the lounge to unwind before bed (he is going to be really early too cos he exercises A LOT and is wrecked by about 7:30pm ....... so by the time I have finished up with dinner (he doesn't eat dinner) and cleaned up, I am settling down long after he is asleep and end up falling asleep on the lounge ..... waking up after midnight ...... go to bed and settle for sleep again ...... then he's up at 4am to start his daily routine ..... waking me up in the process ...... gaaaahhh

That's part of our issues over here.

Do you take time-out during the day to rest up a bit ? It's important if you are living on broken sleep.

Re: Flashbacks

Dear faith-and-hope

I hope this message finds you well. I am sorry I haven’t been in touch for a while.

Sounds like you haven’t got the best of sleep routines. I wonder if there is any couple out there, that goes to bed at the same time.

I’m ok. The past month has been tough and my sleep pattern is roughly about 2hrs at a time. And I do that from 10pm to 6am then I am up for a while and go back to bed for an hour or two after my meds and/or brekkie. Not ideal, but it will have to do at the moment.

I’ve had a few health scares lately, so that kept me alert, but I am also trying to be grateful for what I have and make an effort to get into a festive mood with Xmas coming up. I have to find middle ground between my mental illness and my ongoing life.

I don’t know if that makes any sense, but I just want to forget about my mental illness at times and just be.

Re: Flashbacks

Good morning @Former-Member ..... 💕

It not only makes perfect sense, but it is a great outlook to have. Your mi doesn't have to define you .....

Without trying to trivialise it in any way ..... some people live with physical disabilities like fibromyalgia, or medical ones like diabetes, and it is important for them also to not allow their condition to rule their life, as much as it is possible to treat it, and then go around, under, over the issues it presents.

Wtg ...... ❣️

Re: Flashbacks

Hello 👋

It’s 6:30pm. When I was on sedating meds I would sit here and count the time until I could go to bed. Not so now. I’m petrified to go to bed and back to my nightmares. I don’t feel tired anymore. I don’t want to sleep anymore.

Re: Flashbacks

If you can't sleep @Former-Member, at least do your best to rest .... rest simulates the recovery effects of actual sleep, it just takes longer .... so think of an hours rest as being like half an hour's sleep. It find that helps to take the angst out of not sleeping very well ..... you can at least dim the lights, play some gentle music, park up in a comfy chair, take some good, deep breaths, and relax for a while.

Re: Flashbacks

Thanks faith-and-hope

I have tried that, but I’m too hyper to relax in a chair.
I think I’ll try to watch telly and relax?
