Flashbacks

Flashbacks

Hello,

The loop of starting to feel a little more alive and then another flashback kicks me in the gut, out of nowhere, takes my air out of my body and knocks me down.
All energy then is focussed on keeping me safe.
Then follows the numbness. The feeling not to be part of this world. And it lasts as long as it lasts and it leaves me in fear of the next flashback, the next time I lose control.
I don’t even know if they’re called flashbacks when you don’t get an intrusive thought but just a feeling and all your body does, and your brain, is react.

Re: Flashbacks

I want to be saved and no one is coming to save me, not back then, not now.

Re: Flashbacks

Hi there @Former-Member. We havent come across each other before I dont think. But I just came across your post and immediately felt compassion for you.

I'm so sorry to read that you experience flashbacks. They are truly dreadful to go through. I know because I too have them. Some worse than others. My latest one was a real doozy and totally knocked the stuffing out of me. It was over two months ago now, and I am still suffering from the aftermath of it. So I understand how you feel about them, and your dread of the prospect of more to come.

I havent read any other threads of yours, so am not across your story. Do you see a psych currently? If you arent already, I would urge you to seek a psychologist's assistance to help you to develop some coping methods to help you through any future flashbacks. It wont stop them, but it will help you to better manage them and to deal with them when they do inevitably occur.

Something else I'd recommend is to use 'grounding' techniques. This is very helpful in bringing you back to the here and now, and to reassure yourself that you are now safe and not in actual danger.

I'm sorry I cant be of much help to you, but I'm sure others will come on board with further advice and support. Meanwhile please know you are not alone in these feelings you are having. Many here understand and know what you are likely going through. My best wishes for you.

I will tag a few others who will know who else to tag to offer you further help: @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51 @Zoe7 @Former-Member

Hi @Former-Member. Please delete my account. Won’t change my mind. This is final. Been told by my partner to stop moping around and stop playing a self pity party, so I need to change.

Re: Flashbacks

Hi @Former-Member I completely respect your decision to leave but know we are here for you if you decide to come back.

As for the flashbacks - yep I hear you.

Yesterday I was actually doing better than I have been in a very long time - then I was hit very unexpectedly by a flashback last night. The effects of this one seemed to be worse than they have been for a while - I believe it is because I had 'let my guard down' a bit and so when it hit I didn't have the same defences up that I usually do.

I do find it hard to explain the physical reactions I have when this happens - and often the physical reactions are worse because there is nothing that can help with them but time - and that further feeds into how I cope mentally.

Not being able to 'control' the flashbacks also means I am constantly trying to avoid triggers - and by the very process of trying to do that it can actually be a trigger in itself. So life is a balancing act - and definitely not one I have a grasp on at the moment.

It does feel like this LIFE we are living through will never change but knowing that there are people here that understand does make dealing with it just that little bit easier.

...and you are definitely not 'playing a self-pity party' @Former-Member - your feelings are real, they are valid and they do matter - YOU do matter
