Something’s not right

Hatred of Positivity and other things.

Hatred of Positivity and other things.

I need to vent, just to get the bad feelings out of my system. It'll likely be a train of thought.

I can't recall the last time something went decisively 'right' in my life. I agree that it's probably subjective as to what I mean by right, and that the meaning changes over time, probably even to myself. What matters right now is how I perceive it, though, and how that makes me feel. I feel as if my life has been bad since I finished school: A variety of family problems leading up to that moment came to a head immediately after and lead to me suffering from chronic depression from then (2012) until now. I've done all sorts of things since then, like attempt three seperate university/tafe courses, attempt to lose weight through means such as gym exercise, regular walking, etc, practice drawing and art in my spare time.

Everything has been a failure, or otherwise produced no results. There's always some drama that happens that ruins my mood, drains all my energy and makes me stop what I'm doing, leaving me with another year in my life wasted. I get self-destructive thoughts like I'm sure most fellow sufferers here do, but I'm not the sort to harm myself. I am however, painfully aware of the time I spend doing nothing, screaming and crying in bed or wasting time away on simple, cheaply-rewarding pleasures.

My only fulfillment comes from making other people smile and be happy through the variety of online friendships I make while sitting here, doing nothing. My purpose is not to make people smile, however; it's not something I go out of my way to do, but rather a part of who I am. I can't readily discuss or reveal my inner pain to the people I love, or else they will likely no longer smile and be happy. It can be difficult to detect emotion in an online context, but I can tell in the way that people's written responses thin out, or just stop outright, when they want me to stop talking about my problems. I experience the same fatigue when people vent at me too, so I do not blame them.

Asking for a shoulder to cry on, or for advice with the variety of problems facing me is usually a double-edged sword as well: I do not know whether it is a by-product of my many years of being miserable, but I absolutely despise positive and motivational talk. It invariably comes across as naive parroting as opposed to experienced advice that is empathic. It doesn't help that most of such oft-repeated, upbeat advisorial phrases are usually accusatory or chiding to some extent; perhaps a better way to describe it would be that they're speaking from up high.

I probably sound like a wizened, grumpy Scrooge-esque figure, but I am perfectly capable of being positive and upbeat. It is part of how I manage to lighten people up and make friends. So why do these attempts at improving my outlook on my life infuriate me so? Am I just averse to change? Am I jealous of other people's success in comparison to the way I wallow in my sadness and problems? I have most definitely developed an almost masochistic side of myself thanks to my depression: There is a measure of maniacal, psychopathic satisfaction I feel when convincing others that I am hopeless and impossible to save, doomed to be miserable. It hurts me too, though, perhaps more than it pleases...

After everything I've said (if anyone's still listening, that is...) this is probably going to sound stupidly ironic, but does anyone have any advice? I only ask because I wonder if anyone else feels the same way I do; that no matter how hard they try, they never seem to succeed. I want to hear your stories and experiences, see if you have any insight for me, or vice versa!

Crippling depression aside, I hope you're all having a nice day!

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

@SaharaI get what you mean. All I really have is my graphics tablet and my computer, though. If I kept all my doodles, my hard drive would be filled with gigabytes of crap and it's so easy to instinctively just hit the keyboard shortcut for 'undo' when I do a line a little too wobbly, or something doesn't look right to me. I just end up infinitely attempting the same stroke until I start crying and give up.

Nothing's really stopping me from getting paper and some pencils and drawing with that instead, but the computer is so firmly a part of my daily life, it's so much more convenient for me to do my art here instead. My desk here is already too crowded to fit anything more onto it either.

I'm scared of looking for images and inspiration. It hurts to look for help.

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

Oh well, @Orphanim,

I guess I am very old-fashioned- but for me, nothing beats good old pencils and paper.

I suppose if I went back and begun at the beginning in art school, maybe things would have changed by now? Maybe they don't use pencils and paper anymore?

But I would say that when you are starting out- try not to spend a great amount of time on one piece of work, you can become stuck easily, going over and over the same thing and not really improving it.

Move on to the next thing and put the piece that gave you problems aside for a few days. I guess that if you delete everything, then you can not put something aside? That way you can never go back and look at your progression? Welll..... that's kind of different to me.

I have a lot of things on the go, ususally, and I can just move between them when I need a change.

Here is a drawing by Giacometti for you. You can see that the artist wasn't too concerned about getting every line 'perfect'. But the composition works. It has a nice freedom to it.

From what I understand, they tend to segregate physical from digital in different courses all together. There are a lot of elements that work differently from one medium to the other as well as methods and tools. I have a bit of a knack for graphic design, or so I like to think, at least:

Those are two emblems that I made for a couple of acquaintances of mine within 20 minutes or so. I used to use the same tool to quickly doodle out colour/silhouette images of characters or locations I come up with:

I might see about trying to squeeze a drawing pad onto my desk with me to do more physical drawings again. I used to have quite a few from some years back I was proud of, but in the chaos of moving houses and other drama, things get lost. Anyway... I'm turning this into an art thread, so I'll stop posting pictures. 😛

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

Hey @Orphanim,

those are good! I like the last one especially... It's unique.

Yes, I think you could be right... you may be better off studying graphic design, rather than art. In fact, way back in the day, my teachers also recommended that I study graphic design, because my work looked a lot that way.

But I really, really wanted to be an artist... I wanted to study fine art. So I did. Since when did I ever listen to advice?

You have to do what you want to do. If you just do something because someone else recommends it, pretty soon you get stuck in life. You end up being a people-pleaser.

Thank you! That last one was something I made when I first came up with the character of Filly, the goddess of Apathy. Sometimes I get bursts of inspiration at night and just lay in bed, furiously brainstorming an idea, and then at the first opportunity I get I write or doodle it down on something.

Pursuing a graphic art course is something I definitely have interest in and will probably do at some point. I'd really like to try and sort out my more conventional art skills first, though. When you have the intuitive understanding for graphic art, it's not like you're going to forget it any time soon, wheras there is a lot relating to the conventional art that I've never learned.

Do you have any pieces of your art you can share with me? c: I'd love to see them. ❤️

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

@Orphanim,

I am not shy about sharing my art!! The problem for me is remaining anonymous. My artwork is all over social media and the internet and if I posted an image, it would be easy to do an 'image search' and find out who I am.

However, I have one recent painting that I haven't yet photographed, so there are no other images of it out there. What if I put a photo of it up here on Sane so as you can see it- then I can delete it after 48 hours or something like that? Does that sound like it would work? I think you would probably know more about internet safety, etc, then me (being, I'm sure, much younger!!)

I am not conventional with my art- far from it. My latest paintings are more or less entirely abstract. This latest one is entitled "I'm not your f---ing muse." It has writing all over it.

Oh, Filly, the Goddess of Apathy!! I love it.

She is now my personal Goddess! I'm surprised I haven't met her sooner!

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

@Sahara

I understand, yeah. Privacy/anonymity is a concern. I can't say I'm an expert on internet security, but your idea of posting it here for a temporary period is sound to me.

Filly is one of my favourite characters. As much as she's ironic and humourous, there's a lot about her personality that I treat almost as an alter ego for myself.

She'd be an easy goddess to worship too, since you'd be expected to be apathetic about being faithful to her! 😛

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

Thanks @Orphanim, for the picture of Filly. She is gorgeous.

I like the idead of her being an alter ego to you.... I hope that means that you are the opposite to apathetic? That you are motivated?

I made an artwork yesterday that I feel safe to post on this thread. I decided not to post my recent painting, as I think I will use it for something else... I think it will go out into the public arena somewhere.

But this other small artwork wont be going anywhere but Sane.

Re: Hatred of Positivity and other things.

@Sahara

Do not worry. I am far from Apathetic. c: So is Filly, in her own way: She's ironic in that she's obsessive and eccentric to a neurotic degree, but she uses her status as the goddess of apathy to excuse her behaviour using loopholes and paradoxes. "I don't care about being apathetic!" would be a broad example.

I might not always be motivated, but I always have the will to continue to exist, knowing that sooner or later, my motivation will return. Sometimes grief and anguish overwhelms me, but I always have the determination to keep going. Knowing that there are nice people like you out there is one of the reasons I have this determination. 🙂

I love that piece of art. Is that French I see written? I remember I had this girlish dream to learn French and become a writer in France after reading Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. That book was a source of escapism and comfort for during a stressful time in my life, to the point where I cried frequently in sympathy for its characters and when I finally finished it. It was like losing a friend.
