The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

@Sans911

Thank you so much for making me aware of the guidelines. I can certainly understand that it's important to remain anonymous and to tread carefully about what we share. It all makes perfect sense.

May I ask what are the things that help you most by being in the group? I've never been in a group like this before, so I don't have any expectations.

I do know that already, it feels nice to be a part of something that feels a bit like a warm blanket. And that's a good thing.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Wow @Merl that is a big question to answer. Being part of this forum is like having being part of a large, extended family. I have very strong relationships with several female members who I consider my sisters. I don't really have any male 'brothers' but there are male members I have an easy connection with. And there are other members who I know about, and occasionally say hi but I have less to do with them. I tag them occasionally and say hi, how are you or follow along wherever they might post. If I like what someone has said, but perhaps I don't feel the need to respond them I press on the 'support' button so they know I agree with them. Some days I am not so well mentally, and all I might do is press the support button instead of posting. It lets members know I am around, but I am not up to engaging in conversation.

Most longer term members generally stick to a few threads, often ones they have started about a particular topic or issue in their lives. They don't 'own' that thread at all, so don't ever feel like you can't post anywhere, because you can. But you might see the same members posting there day after day. Sometimes it feels like you might be intruding or interrupting, but that isn't the case. You will usually be welcomed. If you want to talk to someone in particular, just tag them like you did me and they will be notified. Wander around the forum and have a good look at some of the topics. Like today there is a 'Saturday Soiree' thread. It's intention is more a social space. There are other light threads that are all about cats, dogs, birds, butterflies, and other things. Other threads might be darker and could be potentially triggering so you need to be aware of that if something is written that might cause you upset. You will find the community guidelines link here

https://bpdfoundation.saneforums.org/t5/help/faqpage

and it's a really good idea to have a read of them because they are quite clear in what's ok to post and what's not ok. Sorry if I have posted this link before.

And lastly like any family, sometimes we disagree about things. And that's ok to disagree as long as the arguments stay respectful. Occasionally you might get a warning from the moderators about breaching the guidelines. It has happened to me on several occasions. You learn from it, you grow and you act responsible by apologising for any unintended harm or insult. And I guess the easiest thing to do if you really don't agree with someone, then 'walk' away. It's better for everyone. Because anyone can see your conversations, and if they get heated and nasty, you potentially make others feel insecure or uneasy.

I am just going to tag two members here so they can just look over what I have said to you and perhaps offer you their own insights.

@Zoe7 @outlander

I hope this helps some Merl

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I think what you have wrote covers pretty much all of it @Sans911 👍

The only thing I will add @Merl is that part of being in this community is the knowledge that on the whole we are living from a lived experience persepctive and although our experiences all differ there are connections through our shared experiences. Kknowing that both connects us and provides us with empathy for what each individual member is going through. Whilst we can never fully understand exactly what each of us is dealing with we certainly have an idea from what we also deal with. That insight into each others' experience is invaluable in both providing support and also receiving it. We definitely do not have all the answers (far from it) but collectively we can relate through our own lived experience.
