The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

@Sans911 my studies were one of the only things that got me through the most traumatic experiences ive had, im lucky that i had a few good teachers that took abit of extra time to help me when i couldnt concentrate or took me longer to get what they were trying to teach. Im very grateful for that AND youve helped me a fair bit too. I definitely cannot take all the credit

Well theres 2 main things mostly. Theres the thing with the GPs. Im not all that sure what to do. Theres been a few suggestions for gps but im not really wanting to travel more then 25 min from home esp since i mostly get scripts now anyway as i really struggle with the connection thing. The gp im seeing atm though i dont know what to do really. Ive done all hes asked for whats been happening the past 3 weeks but i just have this feeling he wont run any further tests til he hears what he wants to hear. Not sure if that makes sense? Ive been taking what hes told me to take for the past week and it really hasnt done anything but he was so adament it was going to work so im tossed on what to do.

Then theres also the nerve things from surgery. The surgeon im seeing isnt being all that helpful latley and doesnt really take responsibility for the damage because 'i knew the risks and still went ahead' its so far to travel as well. Im struggling to find any services local to me though ( 2 services said yes however they are 450-500$ a session) ive emailed lots of services like dentists and neurosurgeons and orthodontists and asked fb groups too but not alot of luck at all. Im starting to see how rare this complication is now esp since it hasnt healed like most would if this happened to others. I dont really know what to do. Im not managing it or the other symptoms since then all that well, im trying not to loose hope but when there doesnt seem to be much help around unless im willing to start selling body parts to pay for it its abit hard.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Yes, I can totally understand @outlander about how your studies got you through those tough times. It can be something else to focus on, that you have control over and are able to do well.

You haven't the best of luck with GPs have you? Damn frustrating. I can understand not wanting to travel too far. I wouldn't want to either. But I also feel he's a bit rigid as well in his treatments. Do you have like a women's health service near you at all? They often have a range of services specifically for women. So sometimes there's a GP, social worker, counsellor and others.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I think I have said to you before @outlander that despite you knowing the risk and acceptaning those risks, it doesn't mean you openly invite those risks. That's another hard nosed, insensitive attitude but unfortunately some surgeons are like that. What are the long term implications of not doing anything for now? Can something be done later? Or will your symptoms get worse.

We have a patient advocacy service over here and I'm wondering if you might have the same that you get in touch with. If so, they might be able to help you find someone else to help you.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm new to this Forum, so please forgive me if I'm asking the wrong questions. May I ask what medical condition you have, and maybe what postcode (roughly) you are in? I know some really good medical people (I have a great Neurosurgeon, and wonderful, caring GP). It might not help you. But it may as well.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Hi there @Merl

Welcome to the forums. Unfortunately due to the structure of these forums, we can't give our locations or postcodes. If we are from a city we can say the name of the city (like Perth where I'm from) but if it was a small town we can't. So some people might say they live in the southern highlands in NSW or the rainforest of Far north Queensland.

So that means we can't also share names of specialists, doctors, or allied health services. It's all about maintaining privacy and safety within the forums.

It's very kind of you though to offer recommendations. Might I suggest if you haven't done so yet that you have a read of the community guidelines. You will find the link for them at the top of this page.

We can share some medical conditions we have, but again if it might reveal something identifiable about us then we have to tread carefully.

I can hear this might really frustrating at first but we find ways around these things and we can still help each other in other practical ways. It takes a some getting used to.

I hope to see around on the forums this weekend and if you want to respond to this post or 'talk' to me specifically (or any other member) you just to put an @ simple followed by their user name.

Take care

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Morning @Former-Member if you're around.

It's almost 4am here. I woke about half hour ago. I obviously dropped off last night thanks to my sleeping tablet. I won't be able to go back to sleep for a while because Mr A will want his breakfast. Care to join me for a coffee?
