The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I'm not sure if changes from medication, my new role as Community Guide or something else, but something has shifted & this time I hope it lasts. Unfortunately, these shifts in the past two years have lasted mere days, weeks or months before I slip back down the slippery slope of deep and persistent depression. I have an extremely long, slow and painful way to go yet before I can even begin to say that I've started to recover (or whatever you want to call getting better from MI, particularly BPD).

Being a CG seems to have given me renewed purpose and reasons to stay alive, as I feel that helping others in this role means being responsible for my own health & being a role model for others in their journeys. I know I'm not always going to get it 'right'. I'm human after all, with MI, and I have my own frailties & vulnerabilities.

But I'm also incredibly fed up and dissapointed in my life in the last year in particular. I never could never have imagined that I would be in the position that I'm in now, chronically suicidal, repeatedly in Emergency departments that I used to work in that now I'm ashamed to present as a patient & I'm judged by my own peers that I so previously admired & respected.

I been incredibly isolated recently, and I live in fear that my life will come to a premature end by my own doing. But I also been fortunate to have good professional clinicians that I have sought out myself, and had to sometimes fight for. And I have the love and respect of a dear family member which means the world to me.

Through my journey in the last year, my clinicians and I have worked through and adapted a strategy that focuses primarily on keeping my safe, responding appropriately to my frequent crises that I bounce to and from, and supporting my fragile emotional and social needs. It's been incredibly challenging, but I believe it's finally working to improve my life one day at a time.

So now I'm feeling a little stronger and able to take more control over my MI & working towards improving my days and finding purpose again. In order to do this, I've had to be more honest with myself, my clinicians and my personal support about my behaviours that are so harmful and risky, and I have had to trust them that I won't be judged all the time which has allowed me to break down some emotional barriers & I be supported wholly.

By being honest, I'm reducing my harmful behaviours, even though it places me at greater levels of distress and increases my vulnerability. But these levels of distress are also reducing in the span of time I'm staying distressed because I'm reaching out for help earlier.

My GP and psychiatrist whom I saw today are satisfied and agreeable with my current focus, yet are still cautious but suppotive me to assist in steering my own course. So what now? I insisted on staying on 2nd daily medication pick up for safety, weaning myself from sleeping medication even though my sleep patterns are so chaotic and lacking, improving my social interactions a little at a time, finding something to enjoy each day (even if it's the daft cat and his antics), and staying on ad medication for the time being.

Why do I tell you all this? Because I still need your support, encouragement, and occasional guidance to stay on track and keep me focused. Remind me of these goals occasionally, and come on this journey with me. I know you are doing this already, but this is my new chapter (obviously of a very long book).

Thanks for reading

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

If a helpline doesn't help anymore, does that mean I cant be helped? @Sans911
I tried talking to someone tonight while sitting here with youse but I felt like I had to leave early. they seemed to be getting frustrated with me. its not the first time its happened though, its one of the reasons I don't talk to them very often. Is it me?
It feels the same with any psych too, like I cant connect with them and it ends up bringing out unhappy vibes in the room. it feels like its all my fault

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Nope, no and definitely not @outlander. There are so many reasons why Helplines aren't helpful at times. More often then not it depends on the connection with the person at the end of the phone. Sometimes it's really good, often it's not. It depends on their attitude towards us. You can work on a helpline and still be judgemental and stigmatising even when you think you're not. And sometimes the helper might be tired, stressed, or even bored. Obviously that's far from ideal, but they are human too, and we all have limits to what we can tolerate or deal with. Sometimes it's hard to put aside our own personal stuff. It happens but that doesn't fare well for the person needing help.

I rarely ring Helplines now myself because of the chance of getting someone who doesn't 'get' me. It shouldn't be like that, but I don't know what to say that might change the situation or make it better.

And your situation with your pysch? It's hard to say what is going on but just like the helplines it's hard to get that connection 'just right'. I've struggled with that too.

Is it your fault? Not in a billion years hun. Not at all. And sometimes when we're in crisis, our mind is so very jumbled we don't always know how to say what is wrong or what we need. And that's not your fault either. That's what happens with an overwhelmed brain. Part of it shuts down to protect you from further stress. It's all a bit of mess isn't it?

Hugs my sweet lil Sis @outlander 💜 💜 💜

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

it is such a mess sis @Sans911
I don't really contact a helpline unless I think I really need it but as soon as I mention that I don't find a strategy helpful or that I have tried a few things before I contacted them its like they give up on me. sometimes it just feels like ive drained all the resources that are available to try and that I should know how to cope and everything.

I don't know why I cant connect with anyone. I can connect with you and @Snowie and a few others but in life there aren't any connections at all and the more I try the worst it seems to get. I don't really understand why that is, maybe its just one of those things where it might happen in its own time or something..

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

The same happens to me @outlander in regards to your first paragraph. Sometimes I think that those on helplines need to do more listening and less advice or strategies. I mean, if we tried our usual strategies and they worked, why would be calling helplines right? And this is the other issue with humans. We want to fix things. Make things alright again. Because no one likes to see others suffering. We want to ease the pain and make it go away. I have been as guilty of that here with you and others. It takes a lot more effort to sit with someone in their space and just 'be' with that person. Sometimes that being means sitting in silence which is very hard for people to do. It's uncomfortable. It feels unnatural. And sometimes sitting with someone means listening, and listening only without saying much at all. The only thing that we should be saying is checking we heard things right.

I don't think you've drained the resources that are available. And coping is such a personal, subjective experience. What works best for one might be the worst thing for someone else.

Connections here work better in real life in some way because you don't have all the other factors getting in the way. Like body language, non verbal cues like facial expressions and looks. Everything is stripped back to just words. Words that carry a lot if emotion and can easily be misunderstood, but it's just words. And there is mutual experiences here, a common ground of similarities and a common language even. An understanding that others not privy to our experiences don't get our behaviour, our way of connecting and socialising. So it's hard for them to connect in a meaningful way with us.

Don't give up lil Sis. It will happen in time. You will have those real experiences in your life your life that will be so rich and rewarding. They are worth waiting for.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

Sorry hun, for some reason yet again I didn't get your notification.

Yes @outlander my sister rang earlier from Adelaide and we had a nice long chat. It's usually me that rings here so it was a nice change.

I'm doing okish. Unfortunately I've been harrassed by someone I know in my volunteer group for several weeks now, and last night it got way too much for me to continue to deal with. I had to message one of the paid staff who rang me this morning, and will talk to the person concerned about it on Tuesday. This person wasn't really nasty at all, just kept sending me lots of messages and didn't stop even when I asked on several occasions. I've had to block him on several messaging sites but he does not have my mobile phone number. Thank goodness.

And my neighbour is still not coping with this enforced isolation so he's heavily dependent on me for advice and company. As he was again today. He has done mental health issues as well.

So it's difficult to deal with those things as well as my own.

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I really hope the staff memberis dealt with quickly! @Sans911 let me know how it all goes.

Sounds like youve got your hands full atm with your neighbour. Its hard with so many restrictions now and with people who dont cope well being in isolation. Hopefully some restriction might be eased soon, that would be good.
Does your neighbour not have social media to connect with his friends family or others on places like fb?

Re: The Challenges of Mental Health Wellbeing

I know I can trust the person I asked to deal with the volunteer. It just can't be done over the weekend. They've already spent an hour talking to me and then I know they also conferred with another worker twice today to discuss the matter and best to proceed. That's all out of normal business hours. The person bothering me can't communicate with me as he's been blocked. He knows where I live but he lives almost 30 minutes away and it's unlikely he'll turn up at my home. If he does I have no hesitation to call the police.

Yes, my neighbour has a friend that calls several times a day. He has friends, he has Facebook, he's in a poetry group (currently online), he has an AA sponsor, and a support worker who comes a couple of times a week! Lots of support. I guess I'm just too much of a softie @outlander. I've been too kind most of the time. 8
