Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

To answer your question @Former-Member a couple of times I've felt weird about disclosure on here with the immediate responses, but in retrospect I have no regrets. Firstly, we are anonymous, and secondly, if we can't be our true selves here then where can we. It just means we also have to accept that we don't all have the same value systems, politics etc and not get into conflict or be provocative when we differ. Only one time it was really difficult where one person kept posting not very nice things to me repeatedly, but the mods dealt with it within a day. I just don't join in when that person is around any more.

Yes I'm ok thanks @Mazarita more concerned than anything else at this stage. Mum can be frustrating at times. All I can do is wait and see what she decides to do and not let the situation get to me too much.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, I really agree with @Former-Member that you need and deserve this time away for now. You will be better refreshed and have more resources to deal with your mother's situation when you return I think.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita. It's not about anyone else and the hardest thing is that it's not for me either. I may be able to help someone by telling stuff but I may trigger others too so I'm in two minds. I would have dearly loved someone to be brave enough to share their story if it was similar to mine when I was in the thick of it. On one hand I really want to be brave enough. On the other I don't want to harm others or myself in the process. Something I'll have to work out I guess. I've emailed a moderator with it hoping to get some feedback as well.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Mazarita and @eth for answering my question. Your answers have helped. Now I just need to make a decision😱 I'll wait for a moderators response first though

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, sounds like you are treading gently, which shows a very caring approach.

@eth, glad to hear you are okay. Just one more sleep until you leave now. I'm excited for you. 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Mazarita. It has triggered a whole heap of stuff for me but I'm doing ok with it.

What's this one more sleep thing @Mazarita. The way we sleep it's like to be three more sleeps😝 I'm with you though in being excited for @eth 😊💜

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member You could say something general like 'I have had similar experience but don't want to go into detail at this time' and then give support. I've done that before. Then you can gauge what to say next, seeing how the conversation unfolds.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, I think @eth's suggestion is great, especially if it's triggering a lot of things for you. We need to take care of ourselves in the process of caring for others on the forum too and I don't think it's a great thing when the forum triggers our own mental health issues. It's inevitable to some degree, I guess, but I sometimes pull back a little from things when I find that is happening with me, or at least take note of it and tread gently with myself.

By the way, you're right about the 'one more sleep' thing, hehe. I guess I'm just wishful thinking as much as possible for @eth.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @eth. I kind of said that already. To me I feel a bit fake or something by not disclosing. It's not a bad story compared to so many people on this forum but it's very different and complex to anyone elses. This year I've been learning about authenticity. I really want to be authentic with this but ironically find myself ducking for protection at the same time.

Re: Night Shift

Yes @Former-Member I was just reflecting on my answers to you and realized I had not mentioned this aspect of sharing sometimes being a bit triggering, but in that respect I think I'm in a place now where it's good to look at things again as I have a new round of therapy starting soon. Only you can decide if you are ready to go there again. If you have PTSD, as I do, it might be tricky for a few days like it was for me but I'd still say I have no regrets with the sharing I've done.
