Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, sounds like it was very interesting to study in web design. I think it's great that we do these things whether or not they lead to careers. Makes us richer people really. I understand what you mean with your realisation about career potential though. During the years I was pursuing the arts professionally I struggled so hard to make enough money to live and mostly didn't make enough to live, even though I was recognised as a bright 'up and comer'. I did some sessional teaching, freelance reviewing, programming of exhibitions, various things like that. I think most people working in the arts struggle very hard to survive financially. Things were also very complicated by in my case by mental and physical health problems throughout. I first got involved in media when about 30 years ago by making little films on super 8 film stock (I wonder if you remember that?)

Re: Night Shift

Can I ask you both a question @Mazarita and @eth. Have you disclosed much of your history on this forum. Sometimes I wish it was a loser forum. If you have disclosed stuff did you ever regret it. I was just starting to come on when you were having a difficult time before @eth after disclosing things. Did you regret that disclosure?

Re: Night Shift

That sounds like a very stressful night, @eth. Your mum does sound like a bit of a handful at the moment. What a pity this has arisen just a night out from you going away. Sounds like your siblings will just need to handle the situation while you are away. Hugs.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member Not at the moment but there've been a few problems over the last few years and also she banged her head really badly a few months ago and was unconscious and taken to hospital by someone from church. We didn't even know she was there. She now wears a medic alert bracelet with my number on it so this process of getting medical instructions is overdue. And my brother and sister have never been happy with her other arrangements re finances etc if something were to happen. She is 75 and lives alone so this is more putting things place in advance in case of an emergency.

My sister, who lives the closest and sees Mum most often, has raised concerns about her mind for the last couple of years. And I've experienced that overnight too.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, yes I have disclosed a lot on the forum over time, to the point of almost crazy oversharing I sometimes think. It has made me feel more vulnerable and like I've said too much at times. But, on the other hand, this is an anonymous forum and that leaves a lot freer to talk openly about things that we wouldn't otherwise. I've shared things here that I've not shared with psychiatrist or psychologist.

Re: Night Shift

I have heard of super 8 film but don't really know much about it. I really didn't do too much back then. At high school I loved processing black and white photos in the dark room. I've held a camera on and off over the years but I'm very very amateur with it. It's not fair that you be talented at something @Mazarita and not be able to make a living from it. Sorry to add another conversation into the mix in last post. It's a bit of what's on my mind

Re: Night Shift

@eth, sounds like your sister is the best placed to keep an eye on your mother at this time, being closer to her. Are you okay yourself after such a difficult night?

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, yes, I read in some of the earlier posts that you were not sure about whether to post something or not. If you feel like it would help to get something off your chest, I would say go for it. I suppose my only disclaimer would be if you were thinking of challenging someone on the forum directly about something. Then I'd say tread as lightly as possible.

Re: Night Shift

It must be hard @eth whilst being so far away but glad you have siblings to help. Dementure is so tough. I watched my grandma die from Alzheimer's. It's such a horrible disease. My mum is the same age as yours as is my dad but touch wood they are doing ok for now. I hope as @Mazarita says you get to go on your holiday without anymore drama, you deserve this time away stress free💐
