Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

That's good that your finding a place where you feel good each day @Mazarita. I really hope that you can get to the bottom of your leg pain so you can walk on the beach again. It is such a calming thing to do. Unfortunately I live quite a way from the beach and can't really afford the petrol often to go. When I do I always chill out though. I think it's great that you have a hobby like video editing as an outlet for now though. 😊

Hope this is not too personal. Feel free to decline. Do you think you'll get back to work at some stage if your health improves. I'm asking because I want to but can't see how it will happen yet.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, petrol is so expensive. I don't have a car and haven't driven for three years. Buses do me pretty well though for the small number of appointments I have. Yes, I did hear back from the psychologist yesterday by email. She said that she's happy to drop the DBT approach and focus instead on 'strengths based therapy'. That sounds better. I'll make up my mind about whether to continue with her for now after our next session. Thanks for your comment about the video editing. Yes, it is so great to have that. Creativity has really been a lifeline throughout lots of ups and downs in my life. The only thing I have a sense of vocation about really. I started taking it pretty seriously when I was in my teens and have had something of a career when I was younger. But, as you say, these days it is mainly a hobby. I read that you started a media and web design course. Would be interested to hear more about what drew you to that and how you liked it before your mental health interfered.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Mazarita. Great you heard back from your psychologist. As you may have read I struggled with DBT. I couldn't connect with it. There are some things I've taken from it but I mostly just put walls up around it. I kind of fell into we design when I went to TAFE to do IT. I hadn't ever touched computers before so it opened up a whole new world for me. One of the subjects was a web design subject. After that I did a cert 4 in web design at TAFE then enrolled at uni. I loved it but I realised that I wasn't quick enough at it to make a career from it. I was studying with a lot of kids who had been raised with a mouse attached to their hand and were so much faster than me. I really liked the design aspect. I loved finding images and fonts to put together and html and css to create a page. I struggled more with programming lavishes though.

How did you get started with video editing?

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita @Former-Member I slept for about an hour before 10 and then was up til nearly 2 and again around 3 so all up I've had just over 4 hours. Maybe I'll get some more in a while. A bit of family stuff happening in emails between when I first saw them after 10.30 pm and Mum still writing at 4.15 am. About her health directive, enduring power of attorney and will etc. She has been quite insulting to my sister in the process. Asks us all for our opinions, ignores them and goes off on another tangent. She's a worry!

She was even asking me if I had a will yet, when she wrote it with me only 1 year ago, so I'm not sure what sort of state she's in. Will ring her later.

Re: Night Shift

That sounds difficult @eth. Is your mum unwell?
