Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member do you find some days are still better than others? Are there things you can do that you know help you feel better? Sounds like you've had a lot of challenges thrown your way in life already. I find these forums really helpful, like the support group I hoped to find for years - at last.

Re: Night Shift

Hi all, eth it sounds like you had a lovely chat with your grand daughter! Hope that felt good 😍
Hi @Former-Member I'm sorry you're having a hard time. I get what you are saying about the long years already... I'm in early thirties too. I also gave ptsd and maj depression and anxiety. Did partners in recovery help at all?

Re: Night Shift

I'm not sure if Partners in Recovery is helpful or not yet. They asked a lot of questions & some where very diffucult to answer as the answers are long & complicated. In other words I had to summarise a lot of pain & I felt very anxious after the conversation. My living situation then triggered more anxiety & I napped for two hours - although I think I was properly asleep for only one. They said they can help me find a psychologist, but they have referred me to a catchment area that is an hour away from me instead of the closest city, which is half an hour.... So they probably won't know who to refer to me to... Now my partner has told me I'm breathing shallow... I'm trying to do the deep breathing, but it is difficult right now...

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member so many major events in a short time, it's no wonder you're feeling it. I do that breathing exercise and it really helps me, especially when anxiety peaks but also when I can't sleep (quite often lately). Good on you for getting to yoga. It's so good for you in so many ways.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Appleblossom,

I agree we can take a different perspective on risk taking periods in life. Whatever we experience is the way our lives have turned out in reality, whether or not we see it as influenced by mental illness. My 'big high' period also led to positive things such as creative achievement and feelings of social connection I had rarely experienced before. There were a lot of good intentions in the midst of it. That time for me was really from the age of about 34-39. But after a while I was getting thinner, paler, physically sicker, more exhausted, financially in trouble, and my life basically cracked at all the seams and finally crashed. So while I can look back and accept and even in some ways embrace that part of my life, it's not something I want to revisit now if I can help it. There appears to be a lot of comorbidity in mental illness. And of course it could all be BS. I don't believe in psychiatry and psychology as the absolute and only truth possible. But I do believe these things have been at least helpful to me in managing mental and emotional pain.

Re: Night Shift

Hi again @eth. Hi @Former-Member.

I was recently in contact with Partners in Recovery too. What did they suggest at the end of your phone call, @Former-Member? I have my first meeting with someone they referred me to tomorrow. Really sorry you are feeling so exhausted with things. Hope a bit of chat here might lift the mood a little.

Re: Night Shift

Sorry @Former-Member, just read back over the posts I missed. You already talked about Partners in Recovery. Sorry all for plonking that post about psychiatry in the middle of this chat. I just wanted to answer the post that @Appleblossom posted earlier in the thread. I had to leave suddenly just when she arrived earlier and felt bad I hadn't responded.

Re: Night Shift

They said they would send over the information to the other catchment area & they would call me today (which they didn't). They said they would help me find a psychologist, do a suicide safety plan & someone would see me locally (at my place or a park nearby)....
