Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Hi @Kurra maybe you could write down all the reasons you want to see the psychiatrist again and what you want to discuss with them and look at it and add to it every day to keep yourself motivated about getting there. I'm doing this at the moment about starting with a psychologist again. Also maybe you can treat yourself in some way in the city as a reward for getting there. Planning the treat might also help you look forward to it.

Hi everyone else.

Glad to hear you will give yourself a rest day tomorrow @Jacques. When I was in the same situation 2 months ago I started doing that too. Like others have said, if you can prevent burning out with carer fatigue you will be better able to help. And you will protect your own health too.

@Angels333 How did your return to work go?

Hi @eth, how was your day?

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth
I'm goid at coming up with all the reasons why I shouldn't go. The car is long overdue forca service. That's a good one but going any other way is just an easy way to put it in the too hard basket and that's overflowing already.

Anyone got good ideas of what to buy for a 75yo male birthday gift?

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Mazarita I eventually got a couple more hours sleep in the morning then took my neighbour to do errands for a couple of hours (her husband had their car) but I bombed out when I came home. I like getting out of the flat with her and we both have our health challenges so we can share well with each other. I trust her and have pretty open disclosure with her. At the end of the day she woke me up and had me over for a wonderful Greek fish soup she'd made with fresh local fish and sent me home with an extra bowl of it. She's amazing the way she goes the extra mile despite her own situation. I had thought I was getting better but the flu knocked me out again after that. Have been micro-napping on the couch all evening in between forum visits.

How was your day? Did you get more sleep too? What have you been doing today?

Re: Night Shift

A day of a nap here and there can be very healing @eth. It's a good way to think about it anyway ☺

Re: Night Shift

@Kurra is there a train or bus you can go on? Re the birthday present maybe a plant would be ok. Or a bottle of good scotch or port something if that's what they like. Or take them out for dinner. Or (might sound slack of me but ...) a gift card so they can choose what they want for themselves.

Re: Night Shift

I was thinking along those lines. Maybe I'll make a cake but it will be a challenge to fit 75 candles on top unlless I use sparklers.

Re: Night Shift

@eth,

Sorry about the flu but it sounds like you had a good day despite it anyway. Your friend sounds great and it's awesome that you trust and can be open with her. I'm glad to hear you are napping and taking it easy while physically unwell and managing to get some social engagement and time outside the home in moderation. Greek fish soup with local catch sounds very nourishing and helpful for healing.

I did get more sleep last night and was up earlier enough today to get to ukelele class this morning. But I hadn't been for a couple of months so I was kind of dreading going back (embarrassed about my absence, social anxiety, etc.). Wasn't sure I'd make it even in the last hour before I was due to leave but got there and had a good time. I've been practicing a lot in my absence and they actually advanced me to the intermediate class today, so I was rewarded that way for my effort in making there. Have had a couple of practice sessions since of the new, more challenging things I learned today. Enjoyable practice sessions. Worked a bit more on a video, slow going this one. Napped in the afternoon and watched Star Trek: Voyager (favorite and just about only TV show I watch at the moment). Won't even bother mentioning the aches and pains and awkward mood moments in any detail because it has been, all in all, a good day. 🙂

Re: Night Shift

@Kurra you can get candles that are numbers so you'd just need a 7 and a 5, or you could even paint the numbers in a different colour icing. Licorice strips are also good for this sort of thing.

@Mazarita Well done you for getting to your class and advancing a level. That must feel good. Sorry to hear about the aches and pains. You do so well at focussing on the positive.

Re: Night Shift

How about 7 and half candles @Kurra

Tell him we have been doing decimal for a while now .. he'll cope ... think of the carbon going into the air .. just joking ... hope you have a grand time.

I read about your struggle about going to the pdoc ... it is a good idea to write things down . . keeps the real reasons for the trip front and foremost ..

@Jacques Sorry to hear you are doing it hard at the moment. Not knowing is a dreadful space to be in .. It is terrible when it is life and death situation ... I am sorry I have not been around much to give any support .. but I have to pull back on my involvement in the forum .. I wont pull out altogether .. but read and post a lot less .. still I wont forget you .. you have made a mark .. take care of you and value you .. we all do.

Hi @MazaritaGreat to hear that ukelele is going well despite your anxiety. You will get more enjoyment from the music if you are stretched and therefore fully engaged.
