Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Hey.

Last night I slept just fine for the night, BUT I woke up at 4 am in the morning and was rolling around since 1 am.

I'm worried that means I will have another bad night tonight...

Re: Night Shift

Amazingly I'm up and at 'em this morning after two short sleeps overnight. Ready for a morning appointment with a basic cooking class. This is unheard of, me getting it together for morning appointments, despite lack of sleep (and a morning headache). What's going on?! Lol.

Hi @Snuchu, welcome to Night Shift. 🙂

Hope the day treats everyone well.

Re: Night Shift

Good mid-morning to you all...

Sitting here in dappled sunlight, listening to the butcher birds whistle their complex songs as counterpoint to the crows' calls of "Faaaaaarrrrrk faaaaaarrrk!!!"

Yesterday I moved my camp chair and folding table down on the lawn to type. Much shadier in the afternoon by the fence...

A butcher bird landed on the fence beside me, and chided me for being in a position I wasn't supposed to be in, or that they didn't expect me to be in. We whistled a few conciliatory notes to each other, and both of us were left happy...

Yes... it was a metaphor for life, that which I just wrote... hugs to you all, my lovelies... 🙂

Hi @Decadian Glad to hear you caught up on sleep and are feeling better. Watching the moon set at dawn is wonderful isn't it.

I'm a little better today and off to see the Dr shortly.

Welcome from me too @Snuchu lots of us here have sleep problems or just sleep at different times so you'll often find someone here for a chat.

Hi @Mazarita Enjoy the cooking class 🙂 Hope the headache goes away quickly.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth

Seeing the moon set so far south was incredibly interesting - and I know that if I had got up and gone outside with my binoculars I would have seen a fantastic sight of the moon near Mars, Saturn and Antares near it - but it was cold enough to freeze the walls of a back humpy - so I didn't

@Silenus

That sounds like a truly glorious morning - with the butcher bird - I know they have a fantastic call - I think I have heard one but it would be a long time ago

The crows but - they impolite - but I love magpies - my son called them "orkle arkle" birds! So desriptive - I love it when I hear them start their breeding season which starts in August around here. I've been swooped by maggies too - gotta watch that and wear a hat if you want to walk around here in the spring

I hope the day is as great as your morning

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Mazarita

Somettimes I fall over myself saying things about prejudice - oh yes - and even the fact that I have mentioned it I acknowledge that prejudice really does exist

And it does

The subject of gender-resignment was pretty hot a few weeks back I got upset - and I rang Life Line about it - and long-story-short - my distress on the subject went many years into the past when I had a friend - young woman - at university - who did admit to me she had gone through the whole process - and I accepted it

But I realised I hadn't seen her for a long time - and then crossed paths with another friend of hers who had also had that surgery - and I learned my friend has taken her own life - for her - the reassingment had not helped her - and I have felt grief for that lost friend - and the long time that past since she died before I knew

As difficult as these sujects are - and how sensitive - at that time I was totally unprepared for what happened - and yet - did not feel free to discuss my feelings with anyone

So I feel I waffle - but no - we can fall over our tongues at times - and why should we not - but sometimes it is the most inarticulate of people who make the most sense at times

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita and @eth, thanks for the welcome. 🙂

It's almost 7 PM, I usually doze off at 9 or 10 PM but if I don't, then I usually struggle with sleep. Wish me luck!

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Decadian,

I feel for what you went through with your friend. How sad that she took her own life and that you only found out much later. I have met another person who said the same thing - that gender reassignment surgery did not help them and they wish they'd never done it. I imagine it's a hard to know in advance if it will or won't help. But really I am fairly uneducated on the subject. I think the issues are likely to be very complex and variable from one person to the next.

It is very hard when things happen in our lives and we feel unable to discuss them. I've had that happen too but I won't go into what exactly it was to avoid sparking a debate here on an issue that may be contentious. Suffice to say, I felt depressed and somewhat resentful that I was isolated in my experience. I imagine you may have felt something similar in not feeling able to speak to others about your friend. In retrospect, I think I should have sought some counselling. Maybe that could have helped you too. But we sometimes don't recognise or do the things that would help us, for various reasons.

I'm now waiting for partner to return from the GP where he will get the results of his ultrasound for the men's health trouble that has him off work at the moment. He was very anxious this morning about getting results and I am too. May take a while for me to return to the forum today, depending on what the news is...
