Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Just imagine the rave we could have if we met face to face 🙂 And the stories we could tell that aren't really suitable for these forums! I too have a history of being bisexual and at one stage had a 3some relationship for several months with a gay woman and a bisexual guy who was thinking of transitioning to female. Back in my heydays! I felt like I was the cat that got the cream. Unfortunately someone was hurt at the end of that. Nowadays I describe myself as pansexual - I fall in love with the whole person, no matter what their sexuality or gender identity, and other things follow from there. I just happen to be with a straight man!

Re: Night Shift

Oops I must have been typing when you posted. Yes they do see a psychologist and a social worker and are in an on-line support network. And I have been giving calling QLife some serious thought. I guess I had to unpack a lot of it to see really what I need, and this discussion has helped immensely with that.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, good to hear you are getting lots of support. I would definitely give QLife some more thought, although with telephone lines there isn't that ongoing development of online friendships and understanding that is possible here. I'm so glad this conversation is useful. Yes, we could have some great real life conversations I'm sure! I have a fair bit to unpack about my sexuality too. Have been through a fair bit of shame about it and even hesitated to open up here about it yesterday. As you said in the resilience discussion, sometimes it seems more important to protect our vulnerabilities than try to smash through them. Other times it seems important to speak out.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita I thought you were very brave to open up about it yesterday and that's why I did too just now.

I agree with you about vulnerabilities though, but as RossQLife said - it can take strength to allow ourselves to be in touch with them. And I feel it is safe to be sharing with you.

Re: Night Shift

I remember us talking about some of this about a year ago, @eth. It was great to be able to share and still is. I suppose I'm fairly 'closeted' about my sexuality these days, which is an easy way to be when I'm in a long standing monogamous relationship with a straight man. It's also the most convenient way to be with most other people I know,. Fact is I'm not very sexual at all at this time in my life. Alternations between 'hypersexuality' and almost complete loss of libido have been part of my journey over time. But, as I get older, I think that my sexuality is just one part of life, whereas it occupied a much more central place in my thoughts about life when I was younger. I suppose I'm still 'confused' and learning over time, which I'll probably do for as long as I breathe. It helps me to be able to talk openly about these things here too, sister!

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita so much of what you just said is true for me too. Up here the LGBQTI community is not large and quite tight-knit and I've had virtually no contact with anyone other than straight people for 16 years until this time last year. I met and have formed a wonderful close friendship with a gay woman who I think is just fabulous and also really inspiring. We have lots of common ground. We're going camping again together in mid-June to the same Aboriginal community festival that we met at last year and also to some hot springs. So great to find someone I get on with who likes doing that sort of thing to hang out with again after so long. The funny part is that she's a psych nurse! So she gets my MH stuff, but at the same time gently challenges me out of my comfort zones. She's talked me into volunteering at the Pride festival this year which should be fun and increase my contacts in that world. Anything is possible!

Re: Night Shift

Awesome to hear you have a good friend who gets you on both of those levels. That festival you go to sounds wonderful. Partner has woken up and is very chatty about his dreams so I might log off now and later get a bit more sleep. Fantastic that we've been able to 'unpack' a whole lot of stuff overnight. Big hugs to you @eth. You rock!

Re: Night Shift

@eth
Resilience is not about never reacting negatively to something, feeling hurt, getting figuratively knocked down. It is about our ability to bounce back. You very clearly have heaps of that. In a few short hours you're not only back here posting but also talking about exactly what got you so upset.
The sign of a very resilient person.
Congratulations @
