Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Ah yes, @eth, I just got to that page in my read-through of the resilience discussion. Had no idea of the forum history there.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita I've spent the last 3 years helping my adult child develop resilience in this area but have rarely spoken about how it is for me, except for here. I remember there was some discussion with you and Appleblossom last year. This week has really reinforced to me that I need resilience about it too if I am going to disclose to people. I didn't realise I'd need it so much in these forums.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, I'm learning from you too. I'd not really thought overtly about 'gender dysphoria' before. Sorry your child has had to experience that. What a struggle, eh? Yes, I have found that the forum does require a great deal of resilience at times. There are so many different people from so many different backgrounds who spend time here or pass through. We don't get each other sometimes, and I've seen it get quite heated and uncomfortable in various ways over time and have had to apologise myself for things too. On the other side of this, it sometimes amazes me how well we do meet each other from such different spaces in life.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita I've had several instances of disagreeing or just not liking the way something was expressed in the forums but have always chosen to step away and not challenge rather than put my energy into it. But this time it's too close to home. As I said yesterday, with so many people in the forums, there are bound to be differences of opinion at times. And often it's something we can learn from, one way or another.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita yes the body dysphoria is a major challenge on a daily basis as they feel that how they present to the world affects how the world responds to them and often those responses are very hurtful. All I can do as a parent is love, do my best to understand and accept, and support any changes that are planned. Hormone therapy and surgery are planned for the future, so the journey is not likely to get easier for some time.

@eth, it's a good way of looking at it, that we can learn something one way or another.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, that is a very big journey you are describing and I can see how it would have a big impact on you too. I can also see that, being already vulnerable with MI, the resilience part might be a challenge.

Re: Night Shift

True that @Mazarita. Sometimes I wish I could give a comment from you extra likes! I think this is all also coming up a lot more for me since the kids came to visit. And since there was more talk about the body changes planned just recently. It's BIG STUFF and no-one I've ever talked about it with IRL has 'got it'. And even family members are not to be told a lot of it yet. Thankyou so much for this conversation, it's really helping. You are awesome!

I'm glad for this conversation too, @eth, and I find you awesome!

Re: Night Shift

@eth, in the resilience discussion, I think Ross mentioned counselling for body dysphoria. Is that something your child accesses? Also wondering if you ever access the helpline he mentioned that is open to carers as well. It's possible there might be some well informed support there for you too.
