Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, I know it hasn't been easy enjoying your family's company while they were visiting and having to go back to not having them there again. Very kind of you to care for your friend in that way. Good to hear you have enjoyed a morning meditation. I've had a bit of a sit with breath too and been outside a few times to check out the morning. Have already looked up the tides so that I can get in a low tide walk later (about 12.30pm). I'm thinking I might go back to bed now and try to get a bit more sleep. Thanks for another chat and hope you enjoy your day. 🙂

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth,

I am sorry for not getting back to you, i was so exhausted last night i fell asleep early, i did email lifeline and SANE for some support and advise, the online chat was flat out so i thought email would be the best choise, thank you so much for all your effort and thank you so much for caring, i forgot to mention @Kurra last night too, i am sorry, so many people offering support and advice, i was flat out with both of them last night, just to keep them safe until morning.

I know it is not for me to help them especially with my own problems, but they are friends and i care for them and their well being very much.

Take care everyone, i hope i can hold out without crashing myself, i will be mindful, if i am not coping to take some time to care for myself.

Jacques

Re: Night Shift

Good morning @Jacques

You are a good friend Jacques. You were just doing what any good friend does, trying to help people who are in distress. That is nothing to apologise for or feel guilty about.

Our concern is the same one that I am guessing you would have for us if the roles were reversed - that this sort of issue requires professional intervention at some level because it falls outside the boundary of what we ought to be trying to manage alone, and that professional support system is available.

So glad you have tapped into it. Please keep letting us know how you are getting on. Good to hear that you are remaining mindful about your own limits and personal needs.

❤️

Re: Night Shift

Morning peeps! 🙂

@Mazarita and @Appleblossom - the Sufi ideal I mentioned is quite a religious concept. Being in the world but not of it. To a Sufi, it means much about this world being removed from Allah, and that our natural state is to be in loving union with Him. We are in this mundane world, but we are ever seeking to become closer to the divine...

I have stripped the religion out of it. I am spiritual, but do not concern myself with gods or religions. So, to me, being in the world but not of it is very similar to your interpretation @Mazarita - it allows me to neatly sidestep nearly all of the bipolar mess in my head and my heart.

"In the world but not of it" also allows me to ignore world politics and economics. Both of these "worldly" things used to trigger my anger and depression greatly for decades of my life. Now? Hah! I think it's humanly impossible for me to care less about it...

I strive for a better world. That is the world I am "of". Whilst many people pray for paradise at the end of their days, I seek to improve the world now...

The only real way to change the world for the better is to change myself for the better, through evolution of self...

I was into Buddhism for a while. I considered writing a book about how the middle way saved my life and makes a lot of sense for managing bipolar extremes. I was tossing around a couple of titles for the book. I liked "From Muddle Way To Middle Way", but my favourite was "From Asshat To Arhat"... hahaha...

Hi @Tyler77 - great work on reducing the substances. Years ago, in the good old long hours of engineering, I'd have 4 or 5 cups of coffee a day. That doesn't sound like much, but back then all they had was instant coffee. I liked a good hit, so I would put 6 heaped teaspoons of gold blend into each cup of coffee I had. 24 - 30 cups of coffee... whoooo... I still remember how it used to give me the shakes, and I'd be so wired...

Hi @Kurra - I hope the back improves. Gentle hugs.

Hi @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope 🙂

Hi @Jacques - exhausting work for you to help those people. Well done. Stay safe yourself, though. It takes a lot of energy...

Funny @plasmo

Hiya @eth

Sorry if I missed peeps. I struggle with large groups...

Hugs one and all...

@Jacques I agree with and would reinforce what @Faith-and-Hope replied.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Silenus. I believe it's not possible for me to define the afterlife or not etc. Whatever will happen after I die will happen whether I define it now or not. And between now and then what matters the most is to live a good life - find peace and help where possible being my main priorities. I do love a lot of Buddha and the Dalai Llama's messages but I've never been able to devote to any one guru or teacher. Jesus too had a lot of good messages but a lot of them get twisted these days. "In the beginning there was the word ..."

Re: Night Shift

I think you and I will share similar Hells if it all turns out to be real... hahaha...

That's my silly way of saying to you that we seem to have very similar views on life, afterlife, love, compassion and doing good...

Huzzah...

Now, where's that pitchfork?

[Si wanders off, whistling "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". The next door neighbour has been singing it for weeks, and he's got a great voice - John Denver meets Art Garfunkel kinda voice. Si whistles on...]

Hi all I can't connect to suicide call back when I need sometimes I wait an hour and then with kids and general tasks my quiet moment to connect has passed. I know lifeline doesn't start until 7pm, and I just feel so vulnerable talking.
