Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Faith-and-Hope, @Mazarita @Appleblossom and @eth.

I have helped calm the two people down, i am so exhausted, i have taken on more than i can handle. One of the people was by accident we met through games, now i find i am supporting them every day, i just tried to do Lifeline chat, but it was busy, i will keep trying.

I want to thank you all for the wonderful support, i have put my MH to one side while helping these two people, i struggle but i don't want to worry them with my problems, they are to fragile to anyway.

i just want to say thank you for all your great suggestions.

Take care my friends

Jacques

Re: Night Shift

You are a wonderful friend @Jacques, with a big heart, to be trying to support them in this way.

It is so important that you have help for yourself in this endeavour, ad you are already experiencing. That is what it is like for the carers. Do keep trying Lifeline, and we will be waiting to hear that you got through.

@Appleblossom Is correct though. The responsibility is not ultimately yours. These people have to make choices, and you can only help them as far as you are able to without over-balancing yourself.

Take care. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks faith-and-hope,

i get it, perhaps i'm just avoiding, or in denial.

One 36yo mother at church did everything they said to treat her cancer, everything, including diet, exercise, relaxation etc but now she's palliative & not sure she'll make it 'to July for a booked family trip to family in the U.S. x5 beautiful young children.

Re: Night Shift

@Silenus, to me the Sufi idea you mention makes me think of Buddhist ideas about being serene in the midst of passions. I am also interested in some ideas from the Tao, through discussions with my partner who describes himself as Taoist on the census. I think some of these ideas are valuable especially to those of us with bipolar or swings between anxiety and depression. Living through these things, being with them, but finding a balanced place of poise somewhere amidst them. This may make no sense and be a complete misinterpretation of your comment. Just some thoughts it brought forth in my mind. Overall, though, theories, whether spiritual or otherwise, tend to mean much less to me than actual experience and what it teaches us beyond the conscious mind.

@Appleblossom, your advice to @Jacques and @PeppiPatty is I think wisely put. Life is much more complicated than our ideas of what situations 'should' or 'should not' be. It's awful that woman at the previous choir said that thing to you. I feel for you with what you went through then and afterwards. I remember that time from when you were posting about it. I wouldn't pursue the issue with trying to gain justice from the choir myself because of how much it might bring up old feelings about the experience. For me, it would be something I just wouldn't want to revisit. But it's your choice of course. I'm also not keen on ideas of getting retribution being a reason to 'stick around'. Are you okay at present?

I've had a bit of a struggly day with moods sliding up and down a fair bit from bursts of euphoria to sudden slumps into depressed and anxious feelings. These led me to bed a couple of times for longish naps so I'm not sure how I'm going to go sleeping tonight. Feeling sick in the throat and chest again and running hot and cold a fair bit. I'm concerned for my partner's 'men's health issue' and am waiting somewhat with bated breath for the results of his ultrasound next Monday. Basically okay though. I can usually find something of that 'serene place' in my mind even when feeling tossed around emotionally. Haven't been out of the flat for the past two days though and I and the flat have gone a bit feral. Hope everyone else's evening is going okay or better.

@Jacques so glad you are having insight into how this is affecting YOU and reaching out for help. Hoping you do get through to lifeline chat online. I agree with everything @Faith-and-Hope said.

Hi @Former-Member

It's hard, and it's sad, and we don't understand the reasons why these things happen, but these are our journeys and we need to make the most of them.

I was one of the luckiest ones. My melanoma was caught early, and simply removed from my arm. It hadn't travelled anywhere, though I still had to be checked annually for the first five years. It was a mole that turned shortly after I lost my mother, and I sometimes wonder whether my grief activated it ... some things in life remain a mystery.

We have an unusual cluster of cancer and autoimmune illness in our family. A couple of us have undergone genetic counselling, and apparently we don't have the two main cancer genes, but that just what it is. That's what we have got. My mother died of systemic scleroderma. Who has heard of that ? It is rare, and seemingly came out of nowhere.

We are so advanced as a society we start to believe we are superior (affluenza). Trials and tribulations can give us cause to pool our resources, compassion, intelligence, and faith. Perhaps that raises us to a higher state of existence. I like to think so.

Take heart, Tawney. Find and share joy in every day, grieve the griefs as well. Some people believe that sorrow sharpens our perception of joy as well.

I am glad to know you ❤️
