Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Maybe talk to Lifeline yourself because they will likely be able to advise you how to proceed as a support person.

They are the professionals because they have training and experience about what, and what not to do.

Has anyone else been in this position ? What were you advised to do ?

Re: Night Shift

Do you know them only on-line or do you know where they live? If you know where they live you can let the nearest hospital know what is happening or get the police to do a welfare check on them. If they do get admitted to hospital they will get the help they need. I had to do that with someone nearby a couple of months ago and it was hard at the time but I do not feel guilty. They are alive and coping well now and that's what matters most.

Re: Night Shift

You can call Lifeline @Jacques, to ask how to best support your friends.

Explain the issue, that they are only trusting you, and won't call Lifeline for themselves.

See what the support personnel advise you. You shouldn't be in this on your own.

Re: Night Shift

@Jacques I totally agree with @Faith-and-Hope about you making the call so you can be supported in giving support. Lifeline are professionals with much experience in this area. I am sure you won't have to name the people involved if you feel you can't, but you will be better equipped to handle the situation and look after yourself at the same time.

Re: Night Shift

Oh @Jacques
I wish I was with you right now and help you. I agree with the others if you can ring lifeline and get some advice on how to handle this difficult and delicate situation.
Thinking of you.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Jacques
Betraying trust that someone has given to you when there is an imminent probability of suicide is not a betrayal.
It is a time when you are taking positive action to protect a person who is no longer able to do this themself.
I have phoned 000 and requested an urgent welfare check. It got this person the help they needed. This person continued to trust me.
I would not be alive today if people hadn't done the same thing for me. To this day I remain extremely grateful.
