Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Dear @eth

How are you ?

thank you for your lovely message.

I've found this site online called Quora which I LOVE. Someine from somewhere around the world wrote in about how to get through the day. I thought I will look at these ones;

. Three Breathing Exercises

. How to Start a Gratitude Journal

I thought that they might help me. I have no idea how to write; here and it automatically goes to the site. Once a wonderful moderator gave me instructions but lost the message.. :0(

So I will work it out...

Re: Night Shift

Hi @PeppiPatty,

Thank you for thinking of me just as me. My mind is so full of assessments of myself. I try to bat them away when I catch myself out, or else just watch the thoughts like they are clouds passing by. Sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't. About the religious sect: I was talking about a dream when I wrote that, but as it happens I was in a sect when I was about 22-23. Lasted for about 9 months before I gave it up. When I was living at their centre we used to meditate four times a day, 90 minutes at a time. There were things that were good about it but, yeah, it wasn't for me.

The poems @eth has been writing are in this discussion thread. You can read the individual posts where she has posted poems here, here and here. I only just worked out how to post to individual messages just now. Hope it works!

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Mazarita. How's your day going? I'm having another quiet one at home, exhausted despite doing nothing. I think all the broken nights have caught up with me. Slept most of the morning.

Re: Night Shift

@eth,

Know that feeling of being exhausted despite doing nothing very well. Glad you've caught up a little with the morning sleep. Sounds like the depression side of things is the main issue for you at present. Hope your medical people can help more with that.

So far today I went out at about 10am (early start for me). Walked down the higway to pay a deposit for accommodation for my mum when she comes up here next year (a very early booking but I wanted to do it so she has something to look forward to). Then longish walk down the beach to the chemist and picked up some melatonin. I found out from the pharmacist that the (more expensive) type of melatonin that you get on a prescription is a much higher dose and much more effective than the stuff you get over the counter. GP had given me a prescription so I'm going to start that and see how it goes. Then to the dentist and had a filling. First time without anaesthetic needle. I was pretty stressed during the drilling but after that it was okay. Then back home, another long walk on the beach. Sore feet and very tired now but trying to resist sleep so that I don't mess up my pattern for tonight. What I've described is not a lot of activity for most people, but for me it's a lot as I get exhausted easily like you and @PeppiPatty and others.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita sounds like a lot of activity to me, but at least you have a lovely beach to walk on. Brave you having the drilling with no anaesthesia, I wouldn't be able to.

Just finished reading through all my previous writing (well all that I kept) - that might also be contributing to feeling so drained - all the memories of different difficult periods in my life that were dredged up. I'm glad I looked through for the better pieces and have put them in a separate folderbut I don't think I'll go through the whole lot again though.

Re: Night Shift

@eth, sorry I just disappeared mid chat. Just lay on the bed to rest for a bit and fell into a deep sleep. Makes sense that you might feel emotionally drained after revisiting old writing from difficult times. Good idea to let it all rest now, except for the pieces you like. I had a lot of writing from the past that I carried around for years and finally threw most of it out a few years ago. Have a very small collection left now, which I keep wanting to discard as well. It is a lighter feeling not carrying all of that from the past for me.

Re: Night Shift

No worries @Mazarita I just slept for another 2 hours also.

@PeppiPatty I have lots of other much longer and complex pieces but they're not really appropriate for these forums. Would love to see yours too.
