Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

I haven't used the program you mentioned but will have a look at it. I tried doing a daily plan a while ago but found once the basics were in I was looking at a lot of empty spaces. Thanks for the link. Sounds like you mostly do a good job of using your plan. I have done CBT training but it's several years ago now. Some of the skills learned still come in very useful.

Hi @eth, just need to go offline to talk to my mum on the phone. Catch up with you later and enjoy the trip out. Hopefully it will be more enjoyable once you get out there.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth. Sorry about the sudden departure. Mum rang while you and I were chatting. I asked her to wait while I typed out that last quick message to you and then we talked for quite a while.

In response to your earlier message, I'm not that great at getting through the daily plan but am trying to stay positive in my mind about it as much as possible anyway. It has definitely picked up what I do on average than where I was some months ago. Main problem lately is delaying starting on it when depressed in mornings. That and not adding outings to it at the moment (which is part of the idea). The things I'm getting done more daily than I was a few months ago: dressing (sometimes I wouldn't do that), bedmaking, exercise bike, stretches, cleaning (basic), some cooking, going for walks. There are still a lot of gaps there for me too, it's a work in progress.

Re: Night Shift

Sounds similar to me but I don't exercise as much.

I've started with MoodGym since we posted and it looks good so far. Thanks for that.

I'm feeling really blah today with an upset tummy all morning so I'm not going to go out after all. It can wait til Monday without causing any problem.

Re: Night Shift

It does seem to be aimed at much younger people though. Will keep going with it and see how it goes.

Re: Night Shift

Take it easy with the belly. Cool you are liking MoodGym so far. It does have a youth emphasis parts but overall I still found it helpful (also it being free I was willing to look past this). I just started it on a whim one day without ever 'committing' to doing the whole thing. Just kept coming back on a weekly basis after that. Also just gave me something stimulating and positive to focus my mind on when I was staring at blank walls way too much.

Re: Night Shift

I've just done the first module and part of the 2nd but that's enough for today I think. What have you found to be the best parts of it?

I tend to read or watch cooking shows on TV if I'm having a flat day. Am enjoying getting more involved with the forum.

Re: Night Shift

Yes, I found that I enjoyed it best doing it in small chunks with time out in between. It's great that you are connecting with the forum. I'm really enjoying our chats. I'm going to sign off again for a while now to do a few things. May be back later. Ciao for now.

Hello Night Dwellers

Glad to see you both @Mazarita and @eth had company ...

I need to get up early tomorrow so will try to get to bed earlyish .. but as I got up late ... not sure how it will go

I learned a little when I took my son to hospital Sleep Clinic ... to be gentler on self about sleep routines ... we are a lot better regulated these days and a lot less stressed and cranky with ourselves or each other ... so that helps a lot.

I did not want for my son to vicariously live out my problems .. I do feel self blame for that .. but actually cant change it. ... its happened.

One of the unfotunate responses to my mother's stand over and put down games is that I still doubt my right to adequate medical care .... I am trying to get it for me ..now.

Re: Night Shift

Hey @Appleblossom. Good to see you on the night shift. I am one hour behind you and @eth is an hour and a half I think. I sort of try to be both strict and gentle on myself with the sleep patterns at the same time. Not sure that is any kind of method but I seem to be getting somewhere with it. I hear your self blame coming through posts from time to time and hope you can get some relief from that. I suffer the guilts big time, possibly partly from being raised in the catholic church, but also guilt over real damage I have caused or contributed to. You do deserve medical care and it's good to read on other posts that the GP is going well so far. May that continue and may it help you more than in the past with getting a diagnosis. I hear the level of distress you are feeling at times and feel for you with it. I hope that is not saying too much and hasn't created discomfort in any way. I mean well but sometimes the words on the screen don't convey us well.
